Torii Station is a small Army post in Yomitan. Home of 1st BN 1st Special Forces Group.. those are the guys that are usually rolling BJJ at the gym there on Torii. They also have their own dojo/fight club at the building where they work. Quite a few of those guys are well versed in MMA and BJJ. Torii isn't too far from Kadena and if you could hook up with some of the SF guys there, it might be well worth your time.:)

There's not anything on Kadena that I know of. There were two guys here that taught it three years ago when I left but they have since transferred. When I got back here in July, that was one of the first things I started looking for but came up empty.
Just remembered.......
There may be a couple of guys over at Futenma. I'll be back in Oki in a week or so and will check with them. PM me and I'll let you know what I find out.

grr i guess i will just ahve to find people at the gym then or get someone into it here... i can teach basics but honestly who would want to learn from a white belts. our club in korea was just the ranking belt would teach the class or delegate it on another belt. so i know i could teach people up to a certain level but it would just be nice to have people to get mat time with

Hello everyone,
My name is JP and I've been training BJJ for 4.5 years now and I would like to keep training until the day I die. I have my purple belt from here in San Diego and I would like to know where the good Jiu-Jitsu spots are on the island and if there are not any spots, we can start something good there. I'll be in Kinser starting in July and my goal is to start training there since day one.
Please keep me in touch.
JP

I have always been curious about Savate...you familiar with it?
As for BJJ...there is this Capoeria school on the main road off of Kadena AB. The road is called Hghwy 58, and it's a lefterly direction when leaving Gate 1 from base. Don't know if they train in Brazilian Jujitsu though.

Savate always looked cool, but I doubt I'd be fast or cordinated enough for it. Besides, i wonder if it would actually work in practical application. Kind of like how capoeira got all big for a while (like after that flick "only the strong" came out) but I don't ever think I've seen it "work" in MMA or anything like that. (Barring that one youtube clip).

I've considered getting into something structured myself, but I can't seem to pick what I want. I know I'm not super fast, but I'm big, and tall with long limbs and a lot of strength. Any suggestions on a style/disipline?

0341Isa,
I would like to recommend Bujinkan Taijutsu. It is a combat art (both armed and unarmed) that emphasizes timing, distance and natural body movement over size and power. This makes it suitable for both men and women of any body type. Here is a link for the Okinawa Bujinkan Taka-Seigi dojo:
http://www.okinawabtsd.com/id17.htm
It seems that most martial artists that pick up this style stick with it for the long haul. There is also a great deal of comraderie in the Bujinkan unlike anything I have experienced outside of the military.
I currently live and train in Wisconsin, but will be visiting and training in Okinawa in a week or so, can't wait.
Good luck in your search for a martial art that fits you.

Your in the birthplace of Karate. I'd take some sort of karate in town and try and get your black belt; maybe Shotokan (Lyoto Machida) or Kyokushin/Goju Ryu (GSP).

Hello all...im on the Island on TAD and was wondering where I can train for the next 2 weeks. I am currently at Camp Courtney but it looks as if the bus can pretty much take me anywhere else. Thank you for your time.

Never the art, its how hard you train. All martial arts are crap if you don't train hard, none are better, and any master of any style should be respected for their knowledge.

A new movie about Capoeira I saw on youtube this weekend. I think it comes out in October starting in Brazilian theatres.

Hey, they train MMA there at the Capoeira school. I have attended the classes. The style Yudansha MMA causes you to learn Judo, Jiujitsu, Kickboxing, Escrima (Filipino stick and blade fighting) and Capoeira simultaneously. You get a belt in each when you test, but it's also cool because for every belt you earn, which there are five, you have to prove yourself in a tournament, whether a Jiujitsu, Judo, MMA or straight kickboxing tournament. There are fighters in the class as well as people who just want to learn for self defense.
But the sensei is down to earth, trains like a maniac in both MMA and Capoeira and he is super good. Just type in Capoeira academy okinawa in youtube and a whole bunch of MMA and Capoeira videos will show up.
