Should there be a world-wide halt on animal pet breeding and sales until all the pets that need homes are adopted?

Oh no Tony. Were you threatened by TP's Jackbooted AR'ists?
lol...I agree with you. Unfortunately so many HUMANS don't understand that:
1. We are the custodians of the earth.
2. That a fierce dog does not make a penis larger.
3. That expensive pets do not make one more suave.

agreed, we should ban breeding and selling of all animals as there are plenty out there that need a good home. Anyone know how many animals are killed everyday on Okinawa?

Bollocks.
There will always be dogs in rescue shelters, and the majority will be crossbreeds, as well as many purebreeds.
Responsible breeders don't cause the problem. Uneutered dogs are what cause the problem.
No bollocks = no puppies

I think most ARists would agree that my statements are true. What about them is bollocks?
See point number one again for my view on spaying and neutering.

It's a radical idea but it would help cut down the population. Spaying and neutering needs to be mandatory and punishable by law if not followed.

That would help. And then have breeders like Maggie register as such and prove they are capable breeders. (Not puppy mills) TP's comments before about breeding for desirable breeds got me thinking though. And maybe that is not an admirable thing to do either. Pondering.
The other thing, and this is important, is that municipalities need to take some responsibility too. Round up feral animals, and sterilize them. Develop care centers for these animals, and feed, care and place them.
This would erradicate feral or stray animals. Lastly, take the same measures with animals being hurt by humans as are taken in homicide. Sure the investigatory and litigation processes would be time consuming and expensive. But cruelty would stop.
I can see no reason to harm an animal you do not intend to eat.

Ah, got it.
I have to register as a responsible breeder here. Very few do though. They can make more money.
It's almost impossible to keep up with the stream of puppies being sold to anyone who can afford them. If they could be closed down it would relieve a lot of the stress on rescues. These aren't including the never ending supply from puppy farms.
The new rage for designer breeds which sell for more than purebreeds is also a good money scam. We don't have the laws here to make a dent in it though.
I'm very pro neutering. Most of my own dogs are neutered. People don't want to pay the price for it though, and it is very expensive here. They can't be bothered to get help paying for it. It's easier to dump the dog.
It would help if anyone without a breeding licence had to have their dogs neutered, unless they had a good reason not to.
That wont happen here though

Would it help if you just took all the animals that have been domesticated over the past few centuries and released them into the wild? I mean sure, some of those big, fat, house cats would get eaten real fast. But the animals that survive, and have never lived in the wild, and are used to Alpo and what not, will find a way to live. And in doing so, they will bring back their pristine and natural state of existance back into the earth's always stable order. Because as we are being blamed for this rumor called "global warming", if you follow that tripe, the Cro-magon man caused the "ice age" by killing and cooking a few wooly mamoths. I guess the earth was always the same and never changed. I dont know about anyone else, but I am reasured of Natures plan of animal and human coexistance evey time I am at Sunabe Seawall and see the "prides" of wild urban cats that live off of human trash. To me, instead of buying pets from people who breed animals for domestic purposes, go out and grab one of the strays, and make it "your own" pet. Because as we all know, animals are incapable of existing without human involvement....no wonder the Dinosaurs went extinct. If there were just a few beings "protecting" wildlife back then, it would be a totally different time now. Maybe humans would be the pets. Hell, I would like to poop in a sandbox.

Yeah, that is why I said municipalities must be involved. It takes funding to address the problems first, then more funding to prosecute offenders.
I was thinking about a tax for purchasing any pets, but that would only drive prices up for legitimate breeders and cause more black martket or puppy mill operations to thrive.
Like having a child, one should not be allowed to have pets if they can not afford to take care of them- sterilization, shots, etc.
Your other comment about designer dogs; I have posted here about macho men purchasing dogs with a fighting or guard pedigree. Here on Okinawa, the Pit Bull advertisments out strip the rest of the ads put together.
Before someone chimes in with how gentle and nice they can be, I suggest they compare the characteristics of a gentle Pit with that of a Lab. :)
Some people use dogs like cars or homes; It is an advertisment for the individual "owner." I have a bad ass dog, so that makes me a badass. I have a cute dog, that makes me cute. etc.

I couldn't agree more.
I think it should be law that Before buying a dog you have to have a dog licence (dropped here years ago) and before you get the licence you should have to prove there are good reasons for not neutering if you intend to keep the dog entire.
Breeders should be penalised for selling to buyers without proof of licence, and should have to keep a Photostat copy to show as proof.
The authorities should impose realistic penalties for ignoring the law, and breeders who do ignore it should have their breeders licence reviewed and if necessary revoked.
Puppies can be neutered before they're sold, but I'm not happy about the health problems this can cause later in life.
Pit Bull are illegal here, and have been for years. People still breed them though.

People want status symbols, and no matter what we do human nature wont change. Pity, but you can't Make them sensible or responsible. :(
Do you have your own sand box? :D
