OK...Sam's by the Sea v/s Chili's. I love them both, and I end up spending just about the same. I like the variety of Chili's appetizers better than Sam's, but the Curry Soup at Sam's rocks. As far as main courses go, I like seafood, so i gotta give that to Sam's. and in my opinion, the atmoshpere at Sam's is way cool. So, I gotta go with Sam's by the Sea.

You don't like the food, or just dont like the place itself?...just curious.

I like the atmosphere at Sam's better than Chili's. Chili's is always crowded but is cheaper depending on what you order. I like Sam's choices of fish and seafood. They have a great shrimp cocktail!

Ah...cool. I like a variety of foods. Fresh fruit for breakfast, gyros for lunch, something tasty and filling for dinner. But Sam's and Chili's have a bunch of my favorite dishes.

Watzit, when you go to Sam's, it is all about the seafood. I wasn't impressed with their prime rib and thought it was crap. My hubby likes the steak on a sword, what ever that is on the menu. Either way, if I had to choose between Sam's or Chili's and money wasn't the option, I'd choose Sam's.

I am not allowed to order the Staek on a Sword thingy anymore. Me and a couple buddies got into a fencing match. Apparently, that is not funny. I won though. :thumbup1:

I personally would choose sam's by the sea over chillis. I love their seafood and I like the atmosphere better at sams.

OK...Sam's by the Sea v/s Chili's.

The curry soup is the balls, but I wouldn't go to this "seafood" restaurant simply for the soup. Sam's has seen better days - like the 1970s. When you strip away the utterly fantastic interior decor, all you have left is over-priced western-styled fare.

The lure of Sam's is that it creates the illusion, primarily for westerners, that they are back in North America and can re-live their past dining experiences. The dishes served up there are NOT worth the amount you're forced to pay for the ambience.

The same can be said for that tourist trap on 58 just outside of Camp Kinser's main gate - Pizza House. What a ripoff. You can't eat the ambience.

This is a real gaijin thread! LMAO! I've never been to Chilis. Any Chilis anywhere. In 30 years, I have been to Sam's (Awase) twice, yet have spent a lot of time with the family over the years, as we share the same hobbies.

Sam's is for Westerners.

I got married the first time in Pizza House. LMAO!!! Do you old timers get that? :)

I have not tried Sams yet, but i always wondered WHY do people come to Japan then waste their time and money on Chilis?! YUCK........

I love Sam's cheese tenpura and the curry soup is decent. You gotta remember that ray Payne built the Sam's chain to be a big local American style restaurant. His boys do a great job at maintaining the places, but the spark isn't there anymore. I remember going there was a special occassion as a kid. I still go there for special occassions though.

I'm not an old timer but I think I get it. That place used to be the base chapel or something like that back in the day.

Nope. It's off base anyway. And any chapel would crumble to ruin if I were to grace it with my presence.

Give the man a cigar! Every time I pass the place, I just chuckle to myself. No wonder my first marriage ended in divorce! :)

Especially with those banker's hours the consulate always seems to operate on. U.S. holidays - closed...Japanese holidays - closed.

Seems a career in the State Department would've been the way to go.

It's not that I waste my time at Chili's, It is just that I only went to Chili's once when I was back in the States in 1996, after one opened up near where I lived. So it is still fairly "new" to me. And I do get that Sam's by the Sea is more of an "Tourist Trap" type of resturant, but the food is good and YES it is a little over priced. So if I am in the mood to spend a little extra to get some stuff I like, i'll do it anyway. Just like the old Boston club, that food was WAY overpriced and the portions were WAY small. I think the Macaroni Grill is overpriced as well, and i've had better Italian food in Thailand.

While sam's isn't the best either, I'd take it over chili's anyday!

I love sam's 1000 island dressing and their crab legs! Fillet isn't too bad either!

Sams has a great Filet mignon and crab legs. They also have soft shell crab and oysters on the half shell when in season.

Not many places to get oysters around here surprisingly. The only 2 places I've found is Sam's by the Sea Oroku and Baaten in Mihama. They both sell them @ a woppin 2 for ¥600!! Everyone's surprised when I say you can get them served to you for well below a dollar in the states.

I had my wedding reception at Sams Oroku which i prefer to Awase. My favorite thing there though is the Ryukyurita (Margarita made with Awamori)...

How about Tonneau (the restaurant shaped like a big wine barrel)? Or Tsubakiya or Toride in Uruma.? The food is much better at all three than at Sam's or Chili's!
