I bought the "Learning Japanese" software from the PX when I first moved here (a year and a half ago... oops). So, is it any good? What's the best way to learn? I want to learn more because we plan on staying here an extra few years (if possible) and I don't think it does me a lot of good NOT to know the language. I know most of the basic stuff, numbers, hello, goodbye, please, thank you, ok, etc etc. Very basic stuff.

easiest way for me is to know a native speaker who knows english as well. I was doing good but then I married my wife and now I'm lazy and just have her translate.
I've got a couple Japanese books called "Genki". Those books are actually pretty good. The problem is that by the time I get home from work I'm too tired/lazy to learn.
I think some computer software would make learning a lot easier for me. I need to get some.

About the best way to learn Jap over here is to do the following easy steps: (these steps do not apply to all people)
1.) Go to a Japanese style bar.
2.) go to a table of drunkin girls or guys (I find that girls work the best... easier to talk to)
3.)Order everyone at the table a shot... and let them pick it. Even if it's nasty... drink it!
4.) Now just talk... ask questions...
It's that easy... drunk people really don't care who they talk to. Most of the time they just want someone to talk with themselves. You would be amazed at the conversation you'll have. Plus, you'd me suprised at how easy the language barrier seems to fade after a couple drinks.
