Ok. OK. I know there is not a White Castle on Okinawa. If Shuri really wanted tourists, open a WC franchise at the entrance next to the ice stand.
My feelings... A&W....not even close. Mickey D's and BK...:barf:.
Even so, I knew there must be a way to approximate the flavor and texture of a WC burger. As many of you may remember, steam is the secret. Here is my go at it. Cheap and quick. Pretty close. Made my own little crave case.
Kanehide (かねひで)、 the grocery with the green and orange sign, has the beef. Back in the frozen pre-prepared bento (lunch box) section, you will find "Mini-Hamburg". It is written in romaji (English) on the see thru bag. Appx 20 mini-hamburgs for under yen500. Sorry, they are oblong/oval and not square, but I try not to be too picky. Already had the white onion, pre made dinner rolls, and dill pickle chips at the house. My process...
Thaw and quick fry the mini-hamburgs in a skillet, just browning both sides. Mine held 10. Then pour 1/2 cup water over them and cover. Med low heat. About 5 min. Dice the onion, quick saute in another skillet and add 1/2 cup water. Here is the trick for the rolls. Use a grease shield (Round mesh thing to cover a skillet when you are cooking bacon or splatter foods). Cut the rolls in half and put them on the grease shield. Uncover the mini-hamburgs and turn the heat up to med. Uncover the onions and turn up to med. Pass the rolls on the grease shield over the steam from the skillets. Smells great. When most of the water is gone from both pans and you hear the sizzle again, remove from heat. Place the bottom of the rolls on a plate. Add a burger to each and a spoon of onion. Top each with one dill pickle slice and add the top of the roll. Tada! Okinawa White Castle. Start to finish, and I made 3 bags worth tonight (60 burgers), under 1/2 hour. A few beers along the way too. I added a nice salad and some chips. Every one in my house is almost asleep. Better than thanksgiving. I'm full. Hope you liked my Idea.
It was delicious.
Oh. I make a killer rack of BBQ ribs too. Love my grill. Later my BBQ sauce idea. Love to hear yours.

Just reading that brought back memories, but also gave me a touch of indigestion! I think I'll pass.

I was back in da hood for one month dis past Dec, and I drove past WC's EVERYDAY. I prefer to have clean breath, smooth arteries, and normal bowels. Pass da hijiki

Couldn't agree more. Whiteys is da bomb. Haven't had a slider in ages. I really miss that nasty greasemeat sliding through me, especially when I'm topped off with some suds.

I'm from the Mid-west and I have never had a White Castle hamburger. I feel deprived of something gastronomically important.
