47 Year Old American Killed In Nishi Azabu
On Friday the 29th February, a 47 Year old American man was drunk and acting violently in a club in Nishi Azabu, Tokyo. A 29 year old Japanese man from Setagaya ward attacked him and he later died of head injuries while on his way to hospital. This Japanese news report goes on to say that the relatively well-to-do area of Nishi Azabu may seem an unlikely place for such an incident but quotes a local resident who claims that conflicts between foreigners and Japanese are almost an everyday occurrence. He then goes on to claim that foreigners often spill over from Roppongi and walk around arrogantly, come on to Japanese girls in the clubs and cause trouble for their boyfriends. They also cross the road against a red light and will kick any car that sounds a horn at them. He says that the area doesn't feel like Japan anymore and local people are now scared to go out. The article concludes that these no-good foreigners give a bad reputation to everyone. So, just to sum up, the article details in two lines how a middle-aged drunken American has been attacked and killed by a young Japanese guy in one of the wealthiest parts of Tokyo and then spends 11 more lines quoting some local loon saying how it is the fault of foreigners and why it's a dangerous place for Japanese people.
A more factual article from the Nikkei names the American as Tucker Richard Scott (although it's not clear whether that's the right order) and his assailant as Atsushi Watanabe. Watanabe apparently works as a DJ in the club where he attacked Scott. He held him by his throat while hitting him and the report suggests that Scott may have died from strangulation. Watanabe is reported to have said "I went too far". This Sankei report says the incident took place around 10:40pm.
