So the news today at admin. was that once we arrive to Japan we will only be allowed 5 days to find housing in which the government re-pays us for lodging. Is this true? 5 days? Even if we wanted base housing I seriously doubt we can get housing in 5 days. So now the big question is how soon do we come over prior to his "no later than" date. Any suggestions?:crying:

I think it depends on the branch of service....Our friends got here 2 weeks ago and are still at Westpac on Foster....Obviously longer than 5 days...We got here 6 months ago and had reimbursement for the 2 weeks we were there....We are an E-7 family with 1 child and got housing within those 2 weeks.....I guess good luck and get here asap as we are on lockdown....lol...

I think we had 15 days and if we hadn't gotten into housing/found housing we had to prove we were having appointments out on the town searching for something. We got in Sept 1 and have 3 children are e5's and we got housing right at 15 days.

we were reimbursed by the af for 28 days. be sure to have a reservation for 28 days at tlf. otherwise, they may send you to an off base tlf which you have to pay more upfront. you also need to pay for base tlf upfront, but it's less. reimbursement can take a while, so file it as soon as you move out of tlf. good luck.

We're heading there in April and my husband told me that they said we would just have the 5 days to find our housing. We were wanting to live off-base, so depending on how much "reflecting" is still going on, I'm not sure how easy that will be. Keep me updated if you find out any more info.
We're AF by the way... not sure how the policies differ w/ branches

Yeah I'm starting to get that picture...
I was just wondering if there were differences in the amount of time you get to find housing depending on what the policies were for each branch. I've heard 5 days, 2 weeks, up to a month. I guess it just depends on how they want the system to work on "that day", haha.

The Marine Corps side you have 15 days to begin with. After that you have to show that you are actively looking for a house off base or have been assigned an on base house.
I would guess that it is the same for all services. You should have a sponsor that can look into the AF side. That sponsor should also be making all the reservations you need.

1 month prior to coming to Oki I started sending e-mails to the different housing agencies letting them know my needs. I wanted to make the transition as smooth as possible. Central Housing had what I wanted, showed me the House and within 3 days of arriving I had a lease ready to go. However, it took another 10 days before the house was ready.

When we got here, we were told that we would get reimbursed for up to 15days AFTER you were OFFERED a house. We got here at the end of June, got our offer the first week of July but couldnt move in till the following week. At the end of it we were in Temp lodging for 16 days and got reimbursed for it all.
If you turn down the offer then you had 5 days to find something offbase then you were on your own as in paying for your temporary lodging. To get around it look offbase before you go to your onbase housing brief.

You are allowed by AF reg 20 Days reimbursable at your gaining duty station. Up to 30 total but you will have to pay for the other 10. You do have to show proof of searching for a house/appt etc. But on base, TLF depends on space available when you arrive. When my family arrived we were given 5 days on base and then off-base availability up till 20. Lodging on Kadena is a messed up joke, totally disorganized, and you get the shaft most of the time.
They were very hard to work with, I was lied to several times. Very sad.

The rule is actually 60 days, but the initial 20 days are "freebies". To get the other 40 days you would need approval from the Kadena Housing Office, and even then you would have to explain why they would have to pay for it. I was approved for 21 days in my off-base hotel because the Shogun Inn kept giving me letters stating they didn't have any room.
Now with the lockdown who knows how housing rules have been affected. Is it something you need help clarifying? I'm heading there tomorrow to ask a question for someone I'm sponsoring, and I don't mind asking for you.
