heard almost the same story from one of my female customers. but regardless, she was under age, and if indeed a prostitute, it's against the law usmj to pay for sex, plus addultry, and a few other charges etc. there will be charges regardless, if the rape don't stick.

What amazes me the most about this forum is how truly bizarre and maybe deliberate rumors get passed around so much that pretty soon they are accepted as the truth. I guess "scuttlebutt" is a military tradition. It's also called "disinformation" in some circles.

well i guess to back up what i said, the young lady was telling us that these type of young girls are notorious in okinawa. they want new clothes, makeup etc. but my wife has told me that pta have told parents that if your daughter is given 5000 yen a month spending money and she comes home with new shoes, gucci bag etc, you better be asking questions. just as much the parents fault than a young person who wants material possessions. American girls and boys are the same, but not selling their asses. parents just give them the money, new car, etc...if not sell drugs.

so okinawa is mainly poor, so the parents can't give them money, their are no drugs to a great degree to start selling so what do ya do, go without, steal or sell your ass. kinda simple for me, how about you?

I agree that rumors should only be treated as such. It's comforting to believe that this is all some elaborate framing, but no matter what, the SSgt was a low-life idiot.

If the rumor is true, it would be nice to see it come to light. However, it is doubtful it would. There is too much politics at stake.

In the meantime, I'll continue to blame the perpetrator. I'll also try to temper my growing bitter resentment of the hypocritical whining of the locals.

Unfortunately, that phenomenom exists throughout Japan, and is not limited to Okinawa. There have been some academic studies of this, but the cause is not completely clear. Rampant materialism that borders on a religion in this country, is mostly to blame. An overwhelming desire to "fit in" with the newest fads and trends is also responsible. Lack of western Puritan history could also be cited.

Hank, you probebly don't remember but we had a big hoohaw over this back when the 17-year old was burned to death in a soapie. That's when I first started posting. I was skeptical about 17-year olds doing it but was convinced otherwise. I am skeptical about 14-year olds too, but I know the phenomenon exists here. But just because some bored dude posts it on his blog doesn't make it true.

My point is still that it is nothing but a rumor, and each time someone chimes in with "That must be true!" or "Doesn't surprise me", it just adds fuel to the fire.

It is true and has been reported here. Last year police caught several businesses in the Matsuyama district employing 15-16 year old girls for sexual services.
