Yes, but... You'll need to sit down with a bank officer and fill out a form, and also you'll have to accept the bank's exchange rate, which is about 1 or 2 yen lower than the official rate. (I'm assuming you have an account at this bank. If not you're probably out of luck.)

Tony,
I'd say it's unlikely - if it's a third-party check drawn on an American bank. If it's a money order, I'm pretty sure you'd be able to.

That seems unlikely - unless you do, as okisteve says, you do have an account there.

Ian - if you have an account (at Ryugin at least) they will cash it but the form you sign is basically a promissory note to repay the bank if the check bounces.

yes Tony we do it all the time, but they do charge us like 2,000 yen each time so we wait until we have more than one or two

Tony, you were a Marine once right? Do you have an account with Navy Fed? If so, you can still access the base for banking purposes...they will pick you up at the gate so that you can cash the check.

I can get on base with no problem. The thing is I owe navy Fed an arm and a leg for my credit card and can't pay them right now:crying:

used to cash checks all the time at the okinawan branches, but would have to wait around 10 days for it to hit my account. but if you want cash now, the main office down in naha close to the bus terminal will cash it for you on the spot of you have credentials. they will i believe charge 800 yen. electronic transfers are 1600 yen. okinawans still deal mostly with cash only.
