Thought I would share since folks would like facts and credible sources.
Email sent to all NCO's today.

Subject: Recent Threats
SNCOs,
Please enforce to our personnel to always remain professional on/off duty
and to not be provoked into any altercations. Sadly, there "may" have been
recent incidents where Americans "may" have been targeted. If this happened
to our personnel, they need to do their best to avoid an altercation and
notify authorities.
Thanks,
SMSgt xxxxx
Incidents:
1. A SNCO from my unit said his wife (Okinawan Local National) heard at the
Okinawan Wives' Club meeting yesterday that some Okinawan dependents driving "Y" plated vehicles had paint thrown at their cars.
2. One of our NCO's were picking up students for our last silver flag class
and reported that he was harassed on 58 by some locals. They were tailgating him flashing their lights, then passed and motioned for him to pull over. When he didn't pull over, they got in front and hit the brakes a few times. Eventually they went away, but this sounds like the same type of issue and could be a trend. He wasn't able to get any information other than the car was a gold Toyota Corona with two male local nationals inside.
3. "A teacher reported to me yesterday that two cars forced her to stop and bump up on a curb to avoid an accident. Three Japanese men surrounded her car and began tapping on the windows of her car. She grabbed her phone and took a picture of one guy and they ran away. She reported it to PMO and was told the men were trying to instigate a fight. She was alone in the car and scared, but her doors were locked and she was able to think on her feet. She was able to show the picture and tell the plate numbers of the vehicles."

Looks like the Okinawans are remembering how to really protest to get their thoughts more seriously taken.
Maybe it is time to rethink this whole Okinawa as an accompanied tour thing to lessen the boot print even more on the recourses and people here.

this order set the precedence for this. Knowing that we have been stripped of any rights and are confined to places of work, domicile, worship etc they are free to harass us. It has been made very clear that traveling and being off base is a privilege and because of that implicates that so is traveling safely from base to base. Consider it a privilege to be able to walk outside your house and not find paint on it or to be able to travel from one base to another without incident. Why? Because we have NO rights to be off base unless the General says we do.

I think its time to reconsider this place as a two or three year tour. RTD should be one year unless you extend and make the states three years. Have any of these incidents made okinawan news?

Never happen if they go back to the 1yr rotation then it becomes a issue of personnel training and operational readiness.

We already have a problem with continuity with the one year unaccompanied guys. Making all tours one year would have an even greater impact on readiness, and not a positive one.
I've been transiting from base to base since this started (been off of work with two weeks of PTAD), and haven't seen as much as a dirty look anywhere that I've been. The local populace has been just as polite and courteous as they've always been.
On a side note, some young punks did roll a very drunk Marine that wound up in a laundrymat one late night recently (a Marine personally known to me), and that just goes to show that there are a few small groups of aggressive locals. Granted, the Marine was at fault for being so damned drunk that he thought a laundrymat was his barracks room, but the young punks should have just shoved him into a corner or something (vice kicking the crap out of him and robbing him).

Why not kick his ass and rob him? If your that drunk and acting stupid, you deserve an ass kicking. I guess the robbing was uncalled for, but he deserved to get smacked around a bit.

That may be true but if one were to kick his ass the "media" would make a three page spread about it and tie in the rape case and anything else they could think of,hey did you hear an american girl was raped by a cab driver a few weeks back?
Very true, but doesn't change the fact that he deserved to get an ass beating. We had a guy get his ass handed to him while we were in Thailand. He was off by himself doing something he shouldn't have been doing, and was wasted. Those are the types who deserve an ass beating.

At the risk of rumor mongering we heard (unofficially of course) from one of the base protocol offices that there may increased activity of the Japan Communist Party here in Okinawa - you know, the guys in the black vans with the Rising Sun flags and blarring music. The thought is they're here to take advantage of the situation and foment even greater distrust and uncertainty between the Okinawan and foreign communities.
Again, nothing confirmed, but this sounds more plausible than Okinawans suddenly becoming outright hostile. We just need the sh*t to be over with so we can get back into the community and interact with our friends and neighbors.

Violence and confrontation lays beneath the surface of all humans as a species. We are a violent species. Okinawan's do not have any special DNA that excludes them from confrontation and violence.
Though, if you want evidence that the potential exists, you just have to look back about 4 decades to the 60's and early 70's where Okinawans rioted on Gate 2 St. burning cars and challenging police. Somewhere on the forum pics of that were posted (I think by Eelecurb).

I'd have to see who actually sent the email to decide if they are rumors or not. Some NCO passing along what he heard or something coming from very high up the food chain- like the email all MCB people got about the 23 sent back to the US being a RUMOR.
But, if they are true.. it does go to show that maybe this lockdown isnt as ridiculous as people make it out to be. I have many Okinawan friends and have never had any anti- American sentiments directed towards me and until this past week, I rarely shopped or hung out on base. But, SOMEONE elected the very anti American politicians. I seriously doubt they all said they were pro-American or neutral before the elections and then dramatically changed their opinion after they gained office.

Also remember that both right and left wingers send people to hotspots when needed....they know who will be in trouble if there's a fight, and the media will spin it against us. Don't play their game. If you are harassed, take pictures, get away asap and report it. If you can't get away easily, lay on the horn; it will get attention, and these bowl-floaters won't likely do anything in front of a crowd.

I was on the way back from the airport on Monday night (the 25th) when an Okinawan on a moped pulled up alongside of me and began revving his engine. This went on for about 10 seconds then I decided to pull away. He caught back up with me and began doing it again and when I pulled away for a second time he quit. I'm not sure what his intentions were but those of us in the car just laughed at him. This is the first time anything like that has happened but I always here the scooter gangs revving their engines and driving down the street so it might be a common occurrence

Unbelievable. Thank you for posting the pictures. I think this is the first time I have seen these pictures. I was in the middle of this mess. My car was burned on Moromi St. with me in it. I was rescued by the Okinawan police as I was attacked almost right in front of their little Police box. I am sure my car is in one of these pictures but I can't pick it out. I did see my picture on Okinawa TV one night during a New Years program for 1971, some Japanese or Okinawan film crew was out there and had a clip of me being drug into the police station by a couple of Okinawan cops. The crowd had already beat me up pretty good and I was laying in the street half passed out when the cops rescued me. They brought me into the police box and the rioters were trying to break in there to get me. They finally got a local ambulance to back up to the door and they put me on a stretcher, covered me up with a blanket and then sped out of there to KAB gate 2 where they turned me over to the base authorities. I remember either the base commander or one of the wing commanders being at the gate and wanted to know what I had seen downtown. They were like cowards hiding in the base while GIs were being attacked downtown. I can't believe nobody was killed. Maybe there was people killed and it was all covered up.

as far as the issue of Okinawans are non violent people, i am sure there may be some truth to that, but just as most of the americans on the island dont cause problems, there are a select few that do and those are the ones that will be remembered, are you going to remember the guy that held the door for you at the market or the one that gave you the finger? i am sure there are a few natives that hate us and want to cause problems, but i seriously doubt that we all need to get our panties in a bunch about it.

In my 8 years here.......this is one trait they don't possess.
Apparently, back in the 70's, they used to march Marines down the Gate 2 street area because the protests were very violent back then. I wouldn't be surprised one bit, actually. And yes, they are confrontational..... I walked out onto MY front porch today and got screamed at by 2 Okinawan ladies who I'd say were in their 40's. All I could pick out was 'gaijin' and 'America' and 'gunjin' as they were walking by, and I quickly went back inside. I have never seen these women walking by my house. My guess is they are scouring my neighborhood looking for Y-plates that are parked.

All I could pick out was 'gaijin' and 'America' and 'gunjin' as they were walking by, and I quickly went back inside. I have never seen these women walking by my house. My guess is they are scouring my neighborhood looking for Y-plates that are parked.
What is truly scary is how governments and leaders can use fear to change a whole society of people into something completely different than their nature. Hitler used fear of Jews to turn a great country into a horrible device of destruction, Genghis Khan turned goat and cattle herders into a massive empire, even during the battle of Okinawa, the Japanese military had Okinawans commiting suicide rather than be captured by the beastly invading Americans. I fear history is repeating itself, it must stop, Okinawa needs a voice of peace, a voice of reason, that says there are good and bad apples in every bunch, and God help us all.

Right on! You make an excellent point! We need someone who will step up and be an adult here. Politicians are all busy trying to make hay out of this, the hand-full of really whacked out "peace, love and understanding" 60's retreads that hate us and are now "unfortunately" in positions of power are using this to beat their chests and show how self righteous they are. They're really nothing more than wannabe's and blow hards but they are getting all the mileage out of this that they can.
Unfortunately for us, the news media stopped reporting the news thirty years ago. Gee sorta sounds like back home doesn't it. Now they are just helping to push the agenda. It's unfortunate that the media has picked sides rather than remaining neutral. As a result, they are whipping the normal every day folks into a frenzy. Regular folks who would normally be nice are now looking at us like lepers because the media "people we're all supposed to be able to trust for reporting the facts" have painted all of us as evil! Its really disgusting. Hang tough, eventually it will blow over, I hope!

In Ishikawa... Like I said, I had never seen these women before and I am ALWAYS outside with my daughter. I am allowed to sit out on my porch, right? Or am I going to get into trouble for that? LOL
Call DocP next time this happens! He'll slap 'em around a bit and make sure they know what's up!
