Six citizens interviewed...

Sukegawa, female, 59
"As a lawyer, I feel those who rape women don't have a sense of basic human rights. Of course, these kinds of crimes are committed by Japanese as well as American military personnel. We shouldn't forget that. But for its part, the U.S. military should discipline their soldiers, and criminals should be strictly punished. Both Japan and the U.S. should look into the underlying causes of these incidents."

Good to know there are a few people out there that can think clearly on this one. This guy on the other hand probably thinks that the Japanese and foreigners should drink from separate water fountains.

Endo, male, 68

"American soldiers should be segregated from Japanese citizens because similar cases will happen again. I feel it is unfair that they can flee to the U.S. if they commit crimes in Japan. Every solider should be told not to behave in a bad way in Japan. The curfew is a good measure, I think."

The rape and "stoopidness" (misspelled on purpose) agreed is unforgivable no matter who does it. With that being said, the root cause of all this uproar is not really the rape itself but rather the machinations of a agenda driven politicians aided by an equally overzealous media pushing said agenda.

A growing minority of Okinawans want all the military (American and Japanese) off the island. They have been thwarted at every turn by non-responsive governments (American and Japanese). As a result of years of frustration from not being heard, they have literally pulled out all the stops and have gone on the offensive.

They don't give a damn about the dugong, it used to be regular dinner fare and the bones made into highly prized jewelery.

They know darn well that the range near the expressway faces away but they still put up that sign facing traffic that says watch out for stray bullets.

If they were really worried about environmental causes, they wouldn't be filling in Nakagusku bay or a dozen other sites around the island nor would they care about the development of Oruwa Bay were it not that it is for a military installation.

They have a host of legitimate reasons for wanting us gone. But when people get desperate, they tend to act in strange ways. All they needed was the right excuse at the right time. Now, all the rules are out the window. It's an all out media war against not American's but the military. We're all being painted black with broad brush strokes.

There are a few adults out there. Hopefully, this will die down and the adults will begin to speak instead of these 60's hippy retread losers who are getting all the media attention now.

For the most part, the mainlanders have forgotten this story. They're more concerned about the Japanese destroyer that rammed a small fishing boat, the latest government official who goes on trial or the next food scare. To them, Okinawa is the place where they can go on vacation cheaper than Hawaii. To them, all the American's here are part of the attraction. Okinawa is like visiting a foreign country without having to renew your passport. They couldn't give a damn about Okinawa and they probably never will.
