Is burning a public figure in effigy less bad than burning a country's flag? Some may consider burning the image of a person to be a direct threat rather than just a statement.
Flag burning is directed at the policies of a country. I tend to think that burning a person in effigy as a public statement to also be directed at the policies and beliefs of that person.
We are all familiar with images of Uncle Sam, Reagan, Bush, Thatcher, etc... with being burned, but we shouldn't forget that our forefathers also burned the British flag and effigies of King George as well, while they were subjects of the King.
Anyway, here is an effigy burning of an old man who has a mistakenly kindly image that I tend to like and agree with i.e. I agree with burning the Colonel in effigy:
