I see someone took my suggestion to heart:thumbup: See not everyone is against the bases. The owner of Sauces is great guy!

Just heard that the top brass is considering off base food deliveries to be "outside the spirit of the reflection period" and are advising all commands to not partake. Support the Boycott!

So how many times are you gonna run around the forums yelling that Okinawa NEEDS us here? Sure if we left, they'd take a hit, but their economy wouldn't go down the toilet (it's already there:D). The only thing good for this island we do is to provide protection from other countries. But if the JSDF is ever able to build itself up to the level of a normal military, we will no longer be needed.

P-chan is quite right. Okinawa is not as reliant on us (military) as say the Philippines (Subic Bay) was when we were stationed there and that part of the country is really poor. It took some time for them to build back up but they did... I don't see Okinawa suffering such a blow

Thanks kitsune! I keep hearing people say how much the local economy relies on us. Both in here, and at work, and it annoys the hell outta me!

Well I wish we would Isolate ourselves personally. Stop selling weapons to the middle east and get our economy back on track. I could careless if other people around the world kill each other.
But like they said the economy would take a hit. (I.E restaraunt's closing and some bars ect.) but it would only take a little while till they developed the area's occupied by us forces and rebounded the economy.

I understand what ur trying to say but you can't make a person in his/her own country "reflect" even if their own crimes exceed ours. What if the situation was reversed and this went on in the states? Would we reflect?

If an okinawan company fails because it depended on Americans to stay in business, then its the owners fault - not ours or anyone elses. With any business, its a risk the owner(s) take. So the "sweeping generalization" (I love those 2 words now) of the Okinawans need us here is false, but just many businesses do, but not the entire island.
But politically, thats a different story.
Kudos to anyone trying to find ways around there hardships to help bring in the money - or even dually noted by trying to broaden a more positive spirit among the lockdowned americans. "where there is a will, there is a way ... around it! "

I whole heartedly agree with you, but is the real point here that Americans locked on base are dying for some BBQ or is it really the idea that they should have the freedom to go get some that is the real question here?

This is true, but who cares? It's their country, and they're used to stuff like that happening. I seldom watch the evening local news, but once I do, there is just about always something on some type of rape or murder that occured here or in mainland.
However, crimes commited by SOFA members are less common, not to mention they're commited by outsiders in this country. So it's basic common sense that they'll get more publicity then JP on JP crime.

true i get what everyone is saying but still you all should try to understand the point that is trying to be made by this period of reflection. Not just how i been saying the economy would fall i was just in a really bad mood i know it would suffer not nothing permanent and to all the business owners i know alot of them too, my wife also japanese is on lockdown for being SOFA and i still make her abide by the rules of this period of reflection. i know everyone isnt bad it just those few that are could ruin it for everyone. think about it if everyone is confined to base we could weave out the troubled ones, its mostly the young ones that never took responsiblity into their own hands, as for the 38 year old he just screwed up, but this could help and as for the delievery thing opinions can change as mine has, an american trying to help americans good on the owner.

I can't see the brass going for that. The whole point of the "reflection" is to keep us from going out. Why let them in if we can't go out? I'm too far to get the delivery anyway but even if I could, I wouldn't. I hope they keep this lock down for a long time. It sucks but what the heck. I'd kind of like to see how long they can keep it going.

I wish my favorite restaurants would deliver to my off base residence. Those of you who can order even Pizza-la are lucky. If I tried, we'd end up with a squid and roe pizza. :barf: lol.
I wonder though, just a maybe thought, how can an employee of the restaurant who may be a SOFA dependent, such as an 18 year old kid working part time, be disallowed to deliver the food on base from the off base restaurant (other than the 'they own you' theory)? The lockdown order says you can go to and from work.
(Y'all see how that is related to the original topic?)

Smart entrepreneurs and business people thought about deliveries on day one. As for the question does Okinawa need us to survive, no. And whether they need American money, no. It is far deeper than that, they want American money, so the government in Tokyo give them even more money for their military "burden". Thirdly, the residents are getting subsidies for noise pollution and etc. The US troops leaving the island hurts businesses that cater to the US, but the other businesses would be ok. The real loser would be the Okinawan governmental and city funds. Public funds would definitely suffer.

even mccs clubs have a policy where no food other than what is served there can be brought into the club, ie affees, burger king etc. i asked once and they said health reasons. so im sure the base will complain about that also with a comment of health reasons for barring outside food being brought in..

Well that would be retarded, because that would mean if somebody's unit had a potluck nobody could bring food from home and serve it in the barracks/office/whatever. But then, it wouldn't be the first retarded thing to happen here now would it?
Sauce is run by a black dude anyways and I'm sure he doesn't have an official delivery car- hell they don't even have uniforms at the restaurant, so nobody will know the delivery guy is anyways. I'm sure it will probably take a long time though.
I'm all for it. Especially since he is one of our own (American, military) and he is just trying to make a living out here like everybody else he should be supported. The only businesses that really will be hurt by this lockdown are, unfortunately, the businesses of the people who cater to the military and actually like us/want us here/are one of us.
Take a short drive down 58 between Foster and Kinser and count how many businesses you pass that you have never set foot in (or seen americans frequent). Yet somehow they pay the rent every month in a shop on the busiest street in Okinawa. Wonder where all that money's coming from...?

The service-oriented businesses (GI Bill Pay, ISPs, Housing Agencies, etc) should all be fine. In most cases, you're billed recursively anyway via credit card, GI Bill Pay, etc, so it won't matter if people don't show up to pay their bills. It's the product/food oriented ones that'll suffer the most. Those might as well keep their shutters down for a while and wait it out if possible, in my opinion.

I wouldn't say its "built up", Subic that is. Yes they have the base, and attempted to create a tourist resort area, but it's a piece of gahbage. I was there in October. The only thing thats the same is probably the standard government trashcans. Yeah they turned barracks into hotels, literally, and there's a few restaurants, but they came out of the woodworks to get our money when we were there. They pretty much turned a sh*t hole into a bigger sh*t hole.
I saw somewhere that we are like 5% of the total Okinawan economy. I think the biggest hit would be to the landlords. If we left, they'd stand to lose the most because they charge military double or more as to what locals have to pay. I just have to believe that to probably 90% of this island, we are the only ones truly concerned with the lockdown and its ramifications. If they aren't business owners, they are probably apathetic and could care less if we were here or not.

I got this email forwarded to me. It came through this person's command. (I deleted a name mentioned in the email.)
I had a short discussion with <name deleted> this morning regarding the rumors I've been hearing about violations of the general order. Unfortunately the rumors are true. According to <name deleted>, to date, there have been 23 SOFA status individuals removed from Okinawa since the general order took effect. 23. Individuals have been given 48 hours to pack-out, and depart. These are folks that have been seen at places like Starbucks, McDonalds, CoCos curry, and even visiting Okinawan friends. Clearly, the military command intends to enforce this general order. Two things:
If you intend, or need, to be off base, for any reason please use the approved procedure. Request the off base time, get the request approved, and keep the letter of approval in your possession. Don't be off base. We don't want to loose any of our people this way
And I had a second email forwared to me:
Some of you may have received a menu/flyer from Obbligato’s offering deliveries to the base gate. Please keep in mind that off-base businesses, even if owned and operated by Americans (some of whom may be SOFA members themselves) are off-limits and this service from Obbligato’s is not in keeping with the spirit of the Reflection Period.

In 2008 a crack commando unit of SOFA dependents was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These dependents promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Okinawa underground. Today still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem. If no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire: THE A-TEAM to get your CoCos

I received the same email, and it appears to have originated from one of the base ed offices, and was meant as a warning to other base ed employees. That, of course, doesn't give it any real weight, since nobody has been mentioned by name (violators that is).
I agree with some others on here, that it's probably just unfounded rumors. The island is indeed small enough that we would be hearing about some actual first hand info if this were true.

the restaraunt sauce has a website...and i think its even a link here on JU....sauce has nothing to do with hot sauce really, the food is really good...you can get things like ribs and chicken, shrimp, collard greens...stuff like that...i do agree with some of the other posters tho' when they say its too pricey...if you are looking for some good bbq try naps on camp shields...good food, and its on a base so no worries there

Nibikitsune, have you actually been to subic bay (Clark Air base area)? If you call that built up, you sure have a low set of industrialized standards. That has to be the most run down area that I have ever seen...
