I'm probably not the only one lamenting over the fact we cannot frequent our usual "sushi joints." Our sushi bar of choice was Yoshi-Hachi's.
Has anyone heard a time frame for the "period of reflection?" I've heard rumors of 90 days and 6 weeks.
I dunno if I can go that long without a Chatan roll!
I can make futomaki at home but it's not the same.

i know the night before this lock down... I went out and indulged in some of my favorite things to do off post. Yakiniku then to karaoke for beer and song. I don't know what i'm going to do without yakiniku and multiple other food places in my life for much longer.
Some people actually rely on eating off post. i do for one. Working 6pm - 6am will do that to you. Living in a barracks with no kitchen helps, being at work while the chowhall is closed that helps too. i wish on base shoppettes would carry lawsons chicken.

I'm not sure how it is on other bases, but I work those same hours and I eat at the 24 hour shoppette at Kadena AB. The chow hall is also open from 2230 - 0030, and there is a 24 hour flight kitchen that has bag lunches.

I work on Fort Buckner. I had no idea about Kadena. Does the shoppette actually have food you dont have to cook? Thats good information to know though. thanks. unfortunatly i dont think the chowhall is an option because we cant send more than one person to go get food, and that person brings back food for everyone.
We would be fine if on base restaurants stayed open till 12ish. I guess there is always chilli's too every night.

Isn't that Chilis II at the USO open 24 hours also?

Only from Friday - Sunday.
The shoppette mainly has hotdogs, nachos, and those tornado things. The rest of the stuff is microwavable, and then you've got the usual packaged foods.

you really need to try other sushi places.. but let me guess.. you only eat rolls
xdeletex.. Buckner here also.. up the hill though.. SATCOM(civilian). Have you guys looked into trying to get a waiver to eat off base after on base places close? I asked one of my days guys to talk to the commander about it.. but found out when I came into work he has the attitude that if he cant eat off base, why should we be allowed to..

Considering I am pregnant and every american prenatal book forbids raw fish and limits the amount of cooked fish, yes I only eat rolls right now. Have a problem with that?! Yoshi's Chatan roll is cooked shrimp and it is safe along with normal cucumber and sour plum rolls. The shrimp tempura roll was decent as well. My choices are limited and if you have another place in mind besides Sushi-zen (crappy sushi *used long grain rice but has good miso) I am more than willing to give it a try when I am able to.
As far as living out of the 24 hr shoppette, good for you. However I feel there are only so many TV dinners, frozen burritos, and crap nachos/pizza you can make a diet out of.
We enjoyed eating off base and considered it one of the perks of living here. Pizzaria Marino was the sh*t when it came to an Italian fix. There are a few options on KAB but again, we've tried most of them and prefer off base dining.
Ammoyankee- I believe Chili's Too is only open 24 hrs Friday-Sunday evening. They make have changed hours though in light of the "lock down."

then your not eating sushi.. your eating rolls. And yea, I know a 100 places that are much better the yoshi hatchis.. but americans are so stuck on that place that they dont want to hear anything else, so im not even going to waste my time. Im not looking to argue with you about this.. if you like the place, cool, just means I wont have to see you at places I like to go.
And i dont eat american food at all if I can help it. Subway is about it.. My wife makes me bentos(boxed lunch) but unfortunatly I work 12 hour days.. 8PM to 8AM.. and a small boxed lunch can only take me so far. I've been doing ok considering, but like you I cant wait for this unlawfull house arrest to end..

OK, let me clarify then. I miss off base inside-out rolls and futomaki!
Is your sushi place some secret you'd like to keep? I'm not looking for an arguement, just getting outside opinions on these 100's of places I could try and possibly find better food.
I can see where a bento box is disappointing for a 12 hr shift lunch.
The "lock down" sucks but something had to be done. Not sure if the rumored 6 weeks or 90 days is warranted but nothing can be done about it. As an AD AF dependent who wants to stay here, I can only bend over and take it like a big girl like everyone else.

nope.. the places I go are not a secret. But it seems unlike a majority of americans on island.. I despise rolls. I like my sushi raw, on rice, and no soy-sauce. Even the japanese think im nuts.. *shrug*
My favorite sushi place is at the Jusco near Nishihara.. get off on exit 1.2 off the expressway and take the first exit.. cant miss it.
Couple little stories.. was at the family izakaya right outside the glob and anchor gate with my wife one night. And I was telling her how Americans usually only eat rolls and I couldnt understand it. And not even 10 min later 4 americans come in and every one of them orders a order of rolls.. thats it. We both got a good laugh out of it.
Was up in Tokyo last month for vacation. The wife and I went out with a good friend of mine to Tsukiji fish market for some of the best sushi in the world. Well my frined had invited some of his co-workers and thier friends. These two ladies ended up ordering only shrimp.. by the end of the dinner they had probably eaten well over 20 shrimp each.. and only shrimp. lol I dont even know why they came.

It totally depends on how my stomach is acting when I eat sushi or sashimi. I am american and I'm not accustomed to many of the textures that come along with eating sushi/sashimi or the rich irony taste of some cuts of tuna. I am completely turned off by most (not all) salmon sushi. Sushi wise, I prefer white fleshed fish that is light and sweet (halibut or flounder) or tuna. I won't lie and say "yeah I love all sushi." I don't. Some of it I have, well, had a hard time swallowing to put it nicely. I am more than willing to give anything a try though. I do love wasabi! (or it's common replacement) I even make tuna sandwiches now with wasabi in or on the tuna mixture.
Are you talking about Ichi-ban Tei? I believe I spelled that name correct but they have the sushi conveyor belt type deal. I forget the correct term for it. You can also order there as well. Sushi-zen had a decent dragon roll but again used LONG grained rice. yuck...
Rolls are loved by americans because they aren't intimidating and are somewhat universal flavor wise. Most americans who were to get a plate full of some nice thick o-toro sashimi wouldn't find it appetizing if they had never had it before or were not used to the taste/texture. I like rolls because of the combination of flavors and textures. If I were to take anyone out (considering they had never had real Japanese sushi or sushi at all) I would get a combination of rolls, sushi, and sashimi and go from there.
My cousin's husband is a sashimi freak! He's eaten enough sashimi in one sitting to make most of the table turn green.

Sorry, I dont know the name of the place there in Jusco, but yea, its a conveyer belt system. I dont know why this turns most people off.. for some reason a few cheap conveyer belt places on island have made them think that they all suck.
I have no real problem with americans likeing rolls.. I can understand it. Just dont like it when they say they eat sushi.. I'll ask them what kind they like.. "california rolls, Alaskn rolls.. ect, ect" ever wonder why all these rolls have american names to the? because its not true japanese food.. Just like all the chinese food that americans eat and like is not true chinese food.
I can understand not likeing the texture.. think that gets most people. Personally I love good salmon.. you know its real good when it just melts in your mouth and has a sweet flavor to it. I paid $6 for one piece O-toro tuna when I was in tokyo.. actually it was a lot more, because I ate way more then one.. that was some D@MN good sushi!

I can verify that FD does not use soy sauce or wasabi when eating sushi and he is right when Japanese people are surprised.:D

Really??
Oh and I have to agree...Yoshi Hachi's?
I like the excuse about baby books recommending not eating raw fish though. Millions upon millions of women world wide, particularly here in Japan eat it every day of the year.....my wife did too with 3 kids. Oh and they are all perfectly healthy too. To each his or her own I guess:)

I have eaten there and it is best to get there at a prime time, say lunch rush or dinner. In between there were a fish plates that had dried out fish but you just don't plain pick them up. (duh, lol) Hubby like the spicy tuna roll with the mae ploi (sweet chili sauce) and I ate mostly white fish and tuna sushi. Hubby warned me agaist the squid and octopus and I decided to skip those plates. He had a hard time stomaching both squid and octopus. You can get a lot of food for a decent price if you pay attention. I haven't tried any other dishes besides the belt plates. I'll have to give thier ramen a whirl next time we go.
Salmon is a hit or miss with me. Some of it has tasted VERY fishy but some has tasted absolutely awesome. I am just carefui when I order.
O-toro is awesome both as sushi and sashimi but unfortunately pricey. In my opinion, well worth the money spent though.

I'd have a hard time without soy sauce and vinegar. Wasabi is a must though :thumbup1:
I have eaten some sushi while preggo but not much. Hubby has been more concerned about it than I have so I try to just limit it. I try to maintain a happy medium. ;) I was specifically asked by a midwife if I ate sushi even while pregnant and she saw right through my sweet smiling "no."

Feel free to drop names of places you recommend. I WILL write them down and try them as soon as possible or allowed. I have to admit we have only tried a few places but again, willing to try more.

Here is a list of places that I've put together.. just so you know, most of them are recomendations of friends of mine, so I cant vouch for all of them. But I can say that of all the ones Ive been to on this list, they all past muster..
google maps (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=105107005773325569974.00000112003c3fdf28f83&t=h&z=11)

no problem.. thats what happens when you have 12 hours of work and not much to do.. :D I do need to update that though.. have a couple more places to add. I would start a thread in here asking about places, but like I stated before, from what I've seen most people go to the same places as 90% of the other americans and arnt to adventurous when it comes to eathing forgien foods..

I don't swear that it's the best place, but my kids always want to go to the Yumangi down the road from you (rotary sushi). Personal favorites: pickled samma sushi, flamed salmon, saba, ikura. I am not a big fan of toro or of anything else with little eggs but ikura. They also have nice vegetarian pieces, like salads on rice. My wife likes the soups too.

I have been to a few places on list. We like Shin-Shin (chinese) in American Village Jusco. They have a dinner set (2 people) for 3300Y that is pretty decent and included dessert and 1 flavored beverage. The pork salad there is one of my favorites.
