View Full Version : Lockdown patrol challenge at Starbucks on Rt. 58 in Chatan

So like I was telling Socalheart and a few others in the chat today at around 3 p.m. -- I would go to chatan and use myself as bait to see if any lockdown patrols would pounce on me. I did.

Our mission, to boldly go and challenge lockdown patrol forces wherever in Okinawa they may be searching for targets. To seek out, strange gunnies and other staff NCO's whose temper causes them to pop veins and eyeballs; to induce a heart attack or some other public screaming tantrum or knee-jerk reaction...these are the adventures of TheProsecutor set loose on Okinawa....oooohhhhwhaaaaa oooohwhaaaa.....ooowhaaaa ~~~

Report follows
Civilian log: Stardate: 2008, Feb 25.

I first arrived into Chatan Hanbytown sector at approx 16:30. I proceeded to the coffee shop on the 2nd floor and remained there eating a brocali carrot soup and drinking hot tea until approx 17:30. While a few Y plate cars were seen driving into the parking area, no kee-jerking freaking out military life forms were encountered.

I departed the area and headed for Chatan, Starbucks sector on Rt 58 right across from the Camp Lester main gate. Knee-jerking freaking out military life form encountered.

I will relay that part of my log after 5 people thank me for this OP.

Stay tuned.

Thanked. I've been trying to run in to some myself, but I've only run in to a news crew (which I ran from...I don't want to be on TV) at Gate 2 on Friday night.

Lockdown patrol challenge continues:

I arrived in the parking lot of Starbucks at approx 17:40 and there were abundant parking spaces available. I proceeded into the shop, ordered a hot chai soy latte (benti size) and sat down at one of the many sofa chairs that were available.

At first I thought I would sit there and read my book comfortably, but soon I noticed the adrenaline of the hunt was just too much to sit still, and besides, I was worried being out of sight in the building was not the best area to place myself for meeting rabid Lockdown patrol forces. I moved to an outside table.

Report will continue with 5 more thanks.

Lockdown patrol challenge report continues:

And so I was sitting at a table closest to the edge where nothing would block viewing me. It was getting chilly as the wind was picking up and the sun was going down. Looking over the hills I could see clouds rolling in. I sensed, hostile forces all around me.

My body needed movement for warmth, and then I realized if I stood up my profile would stand out more. So I did. I stood up. Walked around a little towards the street corner, turned around, walked back. You know, just the average pacing of a person trying to keep warm.

And I noticed that was catching the eyes of uniformed military drivers in Y plate cars coming from the Foster area to turn right into the street leading to Camp Lester. While they were stopped they would eyeball me.

And then I had a great idea... to cross the street when the signal would turn green and walk all the way up toward the guard post that was checking IDs. In effect, I would be parading in front of a whole slew of Y plate cars as I crossed the street in front of them.

Lockdown Patrol Challenge continues:

So, I move up to the curb, armed with only a benti soy latte and the book "Guns, Germs, and Steel," and wait for the signal to turn green so I can cross.

The signal changed, and I proceeded to cross the street keeping my eyes fixed straight ahead...until nearing the center. Then I glanced right at the front car that had a uniformed military person in it watching me as if I had lost my mind. I kinda gave him a wry smile, like, "I got it like that," and just kept on walking.

Having reached the other side I felt the death star presence of Camp Lester. I continued walking toward the gate on the sidewalk, which normally would have strollers being pushed by moms and dads on their nightly visit to Starbucks, but was now eerily empty, save for myself.

I walked all the way up to the Warning: Do not enter sign they have erected at the gate, and stood there for a minute. The Jpn guards were quite busy checking the ID's of drivers that were coming in so they did not even notice me. I turned around.

I walked back to Rt 58 and timed my steps so that I would arrive at the corner so that I would be met with a red light and be forced to stand on the corner.

That's when it happened!

Lockdown Patrol Challenge report continues:

So there I was...just standing on Rt 58 at the corner waiting for the cross walk light to turn green, when a van with a Marine pulled into the front spot of the far right lane (closest to me). I could see he was about 35, maybe a little older.

He rolled his window down to expose the glory of his cammies and bellowed his voice out toward me, all the while leaning half out his window. Bellowing voice vein popping older Marine leaning out his rolled down van window began:

He: Hey you!
Me: Staring blankly at him...raise my eyebrows and stuck my neck out toward him.
He: Yeah you!!
Me: Keeping stared eye contact on him.
He: You're gonna get picked up!
Me: Keeping same expression.
He: You gonna get picked up!
Me: Same expression.
He: You gonna get picked up! (voice got louder and louder).

His light turned green.

He: F*** it. (while rolling his eyes)

Then he turned and sped off, frustrated that he got no reaction from me.

The cars behind him with military were watching the whole thing play out, too. But, when the light turned green they all just drove away...

Then my light turned green and I crossed to spend another 45 minutes outside standing in the front for more action waiting for an official Lockdown Patrol party. ...

While waiting on the other side, a red car with older Japanese stopped near me and were intently interested in me. Looking into their window I saw they had pulled out a...

Concluding report of Lockdown Patrol Challenge:

.... While waiting on the other side, a red car with older Japanese stopped near me and were intently interested in me. Looking into their window I saw they had pulled out a... camera and were snapping pics away left and right until traffic forced them to move and make their turn.

I continued standing in front of SB's until about 18:40. All the while numerous military personel in their vehicles constantly eyeballed me. However, none took it upon themselves to police what they likely thought was one of their military members. While I do not have a high and tight, I do have a freshly cut high regulation cut, and I am not fat, and definitely do not look so old to be out of the range of military service.

My conclusion is that the military doesn't care enough about policing themselves to make sure their members follow orders for the benefit of all. I also found it disappointing that I could be at such a high profile off base popular establishment during such a time in these circumstances, that not one official patrol had made the rounds, or that an MP car did not spot me.

So, my recommendation to those who are craving a SB's or some other off base luxery, to go ahead and indulge yourself. The chances of being stopped are quite small. And if you are, just stare at them.

If I get 10 Thanks to this concluding report, I will go out again tomorrow to another off base popular location to hunt some more.

Hit Gate 2 Saturday night and again last night. Ran the gontlet from Als, Smitty's to 1st Chance and back. No JP's or MP's in sight. Was out several hours from mid afternoon until about 10 pm. Most bars had the front door wide open. Several Japanese baseball players were slamming brews and enjoying the relative calm inside the bars. Saw a couple of military types inside one bar. Got stopped at a breathalizer check point inside of Kadena a couple of hours ago (near Bob Hope ES). Heard Torii cops are also cracking down on speeders near the back gate. Think I'll take my chances out in town and avoid bases if possible. Looks like military cops are too busy on base to worry about outside.

I wouldn't advise any of the Sofa people to go off base. I know that a couple of people have done so, but where some people don't see any inforcement... others see alot. I was pulled over 4 times on Saturday. I was carded by JP's living Wendy's and I was carded by Shore Patrol walking down the street to my car. It would really suck if anyone got into trouble just because they thought that it was safe. If you do leave or want to still do your own thing, please be careful. They are not playing around

I go off base every day when I travel from "base to base." I get no strange looks, and haven't seen an increase in JP patrols. Since I live farther north than most, I cover a lot of ground. I'm just not seeing the outrage, nor the backlash.

The paranoia over this has, as yet, to present itself in a realistic manner. I'm sure that some of the civilians that make up the bulk of this forum will immediately disagree, for the sake of disagreeing.

So as to slip more believably into a passable military-ish persona, I had my hair whacked off (high-n-tight style) at lunch time and proceeded through the front gate of Futenma straight to American Village to take in the bizarre vistas of American-less shopping at Jusco and other surrounding venues.

I parked the car, and my wife and I picked our way through the lot straight to Capriccioza (sp.????). As soon as we walked through the door, the uncomfortable glimpses at us immediately commenced. Seriously. No hyperbole here.

We both felt as though we’d walked into some arcane episode of the Twilight Zone set in a McCarthy witch hunt for Communist infiltrators of the US Government.

I caught no less than ten of my fellow lunch-goers from ten different tables stealing glances at us. At one point as I was slurping down some tomato-based pasta, I noticed what appeared to be a businessman and his date entering the restaurant. As soon as his date recognized a foreign-looking patron (me), she registered a near-instant priceless jaw-dropping expression on her face.

After lunch, the wife and I strolled to Jusco and through the mall looking for any sort of “Lock Down” sale that might catch our interest. Throughout the mall, assorted fellow patrons discreetly pointed at us and whispered to their companions. Countless incredulous looks from complete strangers made the entire brief experience exceedingly uncomfortable for us. At the money machine, I noticed someone with a similarly close high-n-tight exchanging cash. As he saw me from afar approach the same machine, he smartly finished up his business and slipped through the door.

This was the only citing of a foreigner like me. Even the Starbucks on 58 was completely vacant of gaijin, yet the staff and patrons were just as visibly shaken by our presence there. The entire day in public was filled with similar experiences, locals young and old, male and female, eyeballing us with suspicion, mild contempt, shock, and awe.

What a painfully strange day.

Many of the people near where I live have stared at me while driving away from house.. never before, but now, I see them sneaking sneaky stares. Probably have my house bugged by now looking for the evidence that I'm some sort of undesirable, which I obviously am due the fact that I'm a gaijin, hobbyless gaijin at that... The WORST kind!!! :D

Im not going to start on why I would not want to be American or get into a childish tit for tat argument about the merits of not being American right now in Okinawa or the world at general. I'll leave it to your imagination.
And for your information, I am British, I call myself British as do most people and that is what is written in my passport.
What do you think British people should be calling themselves then?

Oh and so far I have agreed with you guys, a lot of my friends are American and have been joking with tongue firmly in cheek....
Did it occur to you that this affects visa holders as well. I get stared at, made to feel uncomfortable and I live here and pay taxes!
I actually stuck up for the American military in general by spending two hours at the roadside to defend an American involved in an accident with an Okinawan and watching as the JPs tried to do a cover up. I then also defended you guys to a drunk Okinawan as he slagged off Americans for another DUI when it was the Japanese girls fault!
So grow a sense of humour and you are not the only people in Okinawa being affected by this!

I went off base today, well had to go to Lester but was too early so checked out spots to see if any Y plates. Starbucks, CoCo's, Tan Tan, were empty @ 2pm. There was no Y plates at any store/restaurant. Finally found 2 - Y plates at the restaurant across from fire station on Foster the new family izakaya @ 2:30. After I left lester around 4pm went to places still empty. I went to Foster, I left foster at 5pm, still no Y plates at restaurants, but did find a Y plate a Lawson's.

At 11pm, I had to go to the ER, people kept looking at me at the red stop lights, then looked at their watch, looked at me.. I just got home at 3:30am no cops anywhere. When I left Lester, they took info off my ID card and wrote down my license plate, asked for my phone # and where I was going. Kadena is a ghost town I was the only one driving. I didn't see any other cars out!

Spike, not sure it's that Yanks, by and large, don't have a sense of humor here now. It's just funny, at the very least, how we are so suddenly seen by our usually friendly local neighbors as carriers of SARS.

(It's also funny to see how well stereotypes tend to work.)

My wife and I have felt the sort of penetrating stares walking the streets of Seoul, Korea fourteen years ago (unsure what it's like now there), but it has been fun recently, re-living the past.

Cheers, ib

Staring at the occasional gaijin may be a "normal" practice in the backwoods of mainland Japan, but in Okinawa "staring" is a fairly rare practice - at least it has been for me in the past fouteen years here.

I'm really surprised that you haven't recently been the object of curious fascination off base as of late. My wife says that Americans tend to have a certain look - no matter what their size or particular shade of skin color. It's apparently the way we stand and walk and use our other body parts to communicate. Maybe your physical appearance effectively disguises any hint of your national identity???

I'm gonna go out today and travel the empty sidewalks of Gate 2 Street with a BBC reporter here on assignment recording his impressions of "Crack Down '08." (Sounds like a professional wrestling event.)

I'll be sure to report to this forum our collective impressions of today's public inquiries.

Hmm..............

Stars and Stripes (http://www.stripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=52833)

An assistant manager of a Starbucks, across Highway 58 from the main gate to Camp Lester in Chatan, said otherwise.

“A Japanese man working for military police came in this morning asking us to let them know if Americans visit our shop,” said Taeko Yonamine.

But there’s been no American coffee drinkers at the shop since the restriction went into effect, she said.

OCanadaOurHomeAndNativeLand
02-26-2008, 09:30 AM
Muku, let's look at the paragraphs immediately preceding your quote...

“We hope the restriction will be lifted as soon as possible,” said Naoki Tsukayama, manager of Kitaya, a restaurant near Camp Foster’s Globe and Anchor. “We cannot do any business — at all. We closed Friday, and opened Saturday, but closed again Sunday. Today, we are open only because we have a dinner reservation. If not, we would have closed today, too.

“I wonder how the American people are feeling about this,” he said. “I feel sorry for them because many good people are being punished because of the wrongs by a few people.”

A Marine spokesman said the indefinite “period of reflection,” ordered by Marine Lt. Gen. Richard C. Zilmer as the senior ranking officer on Okinawa, would be reassessed March 3.

Until then, spokesman Master Sgt. Charles Albrecht said, “there’s been no change. All off-base activity is prohibited.”

Albrecht said people with emergency needs — such as being able to pick up children at off-base day care or at private schools — can apply for exemptions.

He added that there were no “checkers” ensuring the restriction is being followed off-base.

The movie jarhead. This guy builds you up for something awesome then lets you down with an anti-climatic ending. just like said movie.

You missed the point eel as usual:rolleyes:..........was he reported or not?

A Japanese man working for military police came in this morning asking us to let them know if Americans visit our shop,” said Taeko Yonamine.

eel, eel...learn to read................."asking us to let them know if Americans visit our shop,”

I see I need to finish the paint by numbers picture for you:rolleyes:

That was previous to the afternoon visit by TP, so, the question Mr. Eel is;

"Did the staff at Starbucks report the PM prescence of TP at their establishment?"

Who's the dolt here now eel?

I agree with you! I believe it's our body language that gives us away. But like I said, I just wasn't paying attnetion yesterday. Maybe that's why I didn't notice any extra stares.

Yeah, good points. I don't have a Sox jersey, though, to represent my boys back in Boston. I'll, nevertheless, try to make it very obvious that I am not gonna take it anymore!! that the "lock down" order is being publicly challenged with my Starbucks patronage.

Or how about in a pair of shorts and t-shirt?

During the winter months it is fairly easy to spot the newcomer American's, all the "local people" and those acclimatized are bundled up like nanook of the north.

My wife says that Americans tend to have a certain look - no matter what their size or particular shade of skin color.
Americans over here definitely have a "certain look." Most Americans here don't look like the Japanese/Okinawans. Most are the other colors of the ethnic rainbow: white, black, brown and red. The ones that are Japanese are likely from Washington, like my friend Mr. T (just an example.) who doesn't speak more Japanese than his name. I'm not saying that the wife is wrong, but that she's obviously right.

It reminds me of my least favorite AFN ad about not standing out and everything is in red. Dude! If 95% of the military isn't yellow, they're going to stand out.

What do you think British people should be calling themselves then?
heh. how about UKs? pronounced uhks or ooks. :p just goofin' :D I spell some words the European way also: colour, favourite, humour, realise, utilise, etc. I try very hard not to do it though, because some people are just "that way" about it. I spent a lot of time in Hong Kong as a kid.

Clearly you are Muk. A report filed and published Monday morning will not have any information about Americans reported in the evening. You'll have to wait for the follow-up in Stars & Stipes (if indeed there will be) for that.

In post #66 (http://www.japanupdate.com/forum/showpost.php?p=69771&postcount=66)Muku quotes me, then he inserts a little thinking pause..."Mmm..." preceding his quote of a S&S article which would not be able to report on me because it was prior to my time there. There is no connection between the two, and it seems that everyone except Muku can see that.

Muku was definitely wanting to imply to others that I was lying. He even insinuates the lie charge with snideness in post #32 (http://www.japanupdate.com/forum/showpost.php?p=69506&postcount=32). He mistakenly thought the S&S article would back him up on that insinuation.

He fails, and fails badly at that, not even able to offer up one of his funny mea culpas when smoked out on it. Ha!

Read my previous response TP....you are starting to see conspiracies behind every tree stump too.

Can you tell us if they reported you to the MP's after you were there as they were requested to do previous to your coming there?

Here since you are having problems understanding too I will put the quote here from the article again;
A Japanese man working for military police came in this morning asking us to let them know if Americans visit our shop,” said Taeko Yonamine.

Notice the word in red, also notice that it doesnt have 'ed attached to the end. Need I explain further?

Yes I guess I do...The presumption can be made from that statement that the Japanese man working for the MP's was requesting them to report any American's that come into their shop. Even you should be able to understand that much.

Next since I have to paint the picture even further for you and eel. You visited the shop afterwards, I repeat after the Japanese man working for the MP's had been there making his request. Right? SO Hence the question TP.

The request was made first, your going to the shop came later. Do you follow?

Can you tell us if they reported you to the MP's

How blind can you be not to see that. Oh and another think, as I have stated to you countless times here before, NEVER assume to know what I am thinking or presuming here. If you dont know ask and I will answer. Remember that again.

Why would you think that? Because you think there is no way with spending so much time in a high profile area that I would not have been accosted more by knee-jerking military types?

I, too, am baffled by the fact that more didn't approach me and go into a rage, or show signs of arrogance.

Spent lunch at Fab (bright yellow curry house) on the Sunabe seawall. What a treat. No American GI's in their utility uniforms hip-checking locals away from the piping hot vats of curry. Just me, my American buddy (another ex-pat) and our mock high-n-tight haircuts.

Afterwards, we turned up at Starbucks on 58 for coffee and cakes to challenge the order in a more public show of force. One talkative young lady behind the counter happily took our order and then proceeded to engage us in discussion. I was interrogated in broken English about my presence there.

We weren't made to feel entirely uncomfortable since the questions came at us with generous smiles and light laughter.

However, she did at one point appear to be a double agent for the commanding general as she clearly probed a little more deeply about our relationship to the American military establishment.

We left our answers just vague enough to maintain some shroud of mystery so that if she were compelled to call the MPs or the local police her efforts would be in vain.

Jusco was completely void of gaijin for the second day in a row. Only more strange glances.

At last, I'm told from very good sources that so far 48 individuals who have challenged this policy are now packing their bags for a trip to CONUS.

More to follow....
