View Full Version : Why does food in Japan expire faster than food in America/On Base

I've been here for a while and am wondering if anyone knows what's up with that.

Example: bought the same day

Milk (On Base) Expires Mar 16 2008 (Off base) Expires Feb 24 2008

This happens with a lot of food.

Preservatives would be my guess? Maybe off base milk has less of them.

On base milk comes from the US and it's ultra pasteurized so it last longer.

Tony if I remember correctly the milk sold by the commissaries is brought to Okinawa in bulk and then mixed at Kinser packaged and sold on base.

The milk off base is fresh from the cow.:D

Edited to add here.....

Here is a bit of trivia that not a lot of people know about here in Okinawa.

Here the milk packages sold off base are in 946ml containers, but in mainland they are 1 liter, ever wonder why?

It's a holdover from the days of the Ryukyu Government, before reversion the lines were set up here to handle quart packages instead of liter.

And here in Okinawa SPAM (The brand named stuff) actually costs more than the usual pork luncheon meat....we buy Tulip. It's a lot cheaper, around 200 yen a can.

Have you ever noticed things like yogurt, sour cream, and the items in that category area expired a day after they stock on shelves! Some expires same day or already expired.

None of the meat at commissary is fresh, it all comes frozen and then the thaw it to sell. Who wants to buy brown/greenish meat? Now off base, meat is fresh and you can see which farm the meat came from by the info on the package!

The ready to go salad is usually already turning brown and soggy, usually expires within a few days of them stocking it. Onion's majority of them end up being black in the middle - waste of money. Best buy for veggies and fruits is off base, they are fresh and cheaper by not shopping at grocery stores!

The only fresh meat you will see off base is the extrememly high priced Ishigaki gyu, or commonly known as kobe beef, or something similar.

The rest of the beef is imported from Australia or New Zealand.
Meaning frozen.

I only buy chicken off base and for beef we go to the restaurants!!

Pay close attention to that too because depending on the chicken a lot of it is imported as well, meaning frozen, not fresh.

Amazingly it comes here from Brazil.

I hate to nitpick, but I'm good at it. AFAIK, Ishigaki beef is known as Ishigaki beef, not Kobe beef (which is from, you guessed it, Kobe). Nor is it known as Matsuzaka beef, nor Yoro beef, nor Hida beef, not named after any of the other famous beef producing regions of Japan.

Actually Ishigaki does send some of their calf to Kobe and they do end up becoming Kobe Beef. Don't have a source but I remember reading it when i was in Ishigaki.

That could be true (haven't heard), but in the past only the Tajima variety of the wagyu cow was used for authentic Kobe beef. I have heard of several other varieties of cattle being raised in a similar manner as their Kobe friends, and their meat being advertised as "Kobe style beef".

TLD I used the word kobe beef because it is easier for the majority of people responding on this board to understand and relate to rather than calling all the different names of waygyu, by the names of where they came from.

There are quite a few, however that doesnt change the information I gave in my 1st reply....they are much more expensive and the cheaper meat is imported here mostly from Australia and New Zealand.

Muku, rather than insult the intelligence of you audience in your own defence, a simple mea culpa would do. You could easily include links or a simple explanation if you were really concerned about others understanding. You've been caught once again blantanly wrong. And running from the light like a coachroach.
