View Full Version : Gate 2 St. at night during the lockdown

Last night after eating out, I headed over to Gate2 St. to walk the street to see if any patrols would stop me. Walked the whole distance from Goya intersection to the overpass right before the base on both sides for about 30 mins, and not once did a patrol pass by me. It was between 9 ~ 10 p.m. and virtually all the shops were shuttered or were about to be shuttered.
It was a ghost town. Hardly anyone there. I did see a number of Y plate cars driving in the area and some parked in the Music City building's parking area. The only gaijin I saw on the street seemed to be the three that were in front of the Playaz hip hop clothing shop (that store was the only one not looking like it was closing). One I think was the owner, and the other two looked like they may have already separated from the military.
But, that whole street was virtually empty of pedestrians. Like I said, I didn't even see any MP's or joint Jpn patrols. Was looking forward to having an MP say something to have a little back and forth banter:
MP: Let me see your ID?
Me: No.
MP: You better produce your ID.
Me: No.
Oh, and how funny it would have been as it went on... But, alas I went away disappointed.
That sucks TP... I'd ask you to try it again, but it's Sunday, and I bet Sunday's are typically less busy than Fridays and Saturdays...

Well you might get a chance to do that again next weekend. Seems as though this may not let up soon. So how was the dinner, TP?

I tried this as well on Friday being a visa holder and non-sofa and British. Not one MP no JPs, no one said anything though I probably ended up on the TV cameras everywhere as "only one American" in gate 2, think I am going to get a T shirt with a British flag on it!
It was completely empty except for a few TV crews who seemed to be filming empty shops and signs in English.
Went and had a sit outside Starbucks today as well but nope no one asked me anything.
Dying for some MPs to ask me for ID so I can tell them where to stick it, being a Japanese resident, that could be quite fun!

Any other gaijin non-sofa want to head out to Gate 2 tonight and see if we can find some MPs to wind up? :-)

DocP's been through there the last three days just to see if anyone was breaking the rules and was amazed at how quiet it was.
To Spike and TP: DocP doubts that they will ask for your ID. They will probably ask you first if you are military or SOFA status...unless it is obvious that you are not. Really doubt you will get any type of fun out of the exchage at all.

I was hoping for a picture. I wish people would post pics of American Village, Gate 2, or Jusco.

If the MP's (or whatever military patrol) were without a Jpn policeman or official of some sorts, and one responded with a big grin, "I'm not tellin'. Ha!"
Like what would they do? And what could they do?
Gonna head out today/tonight for another testing of the waters. Not fat and hair is regulation cut, so maybe ... just maybe someone will come up and challenge me about my presence off base.

The real victims from this lockdown are the hookers! Think of the money they are losing.

but i have it on good source that they are patroling but cant be at everyplace at once. they are not wearing uniform though... they look japanese and or of asian descent. just be careful. they are out there. but on monday the senior military staff are having a meeting. They might enforce times limits after hours depending on the members rank.

spike and tp..I don't understnad why you would want to intentionally mess with MPs....those guys are going out and doing 1) what they are told....and 2) the thankless job of enforcing a wildly unpopular policy. I am sure no one thanks them for doing a good job. But I am certain they catch a lot of hell for a decision they didn't make but are requried by duty to enforce.
This seems like reaching for the low hanging fruit. This is the same sort of arguement for the locals who protest the US military and demand for them to go. They should protest there own government and demand that they invite US to leave if that is what they are after.
I am for anyone's right to lawfully protest but just screwing with the guys who are out enforcing the policy hardly seems fair.

Well the point is the military has NO right to tell us what to do but they think they do because we are or look American and it's bullshit.
They are the one's screwing with us. Like that piece of shit that gave TP crap from outside his car window.

Tony, what are they supposed to do. If a guy looks non-japanese, of course they are going to go over an enquire about there status. how esle are they supposed to know? I am curious to know how you would do it differently and also be effective.
SOFA people have been asked to put themsleves in the position of the alleged victim or thier parents to try and understand it from thier point of view.....which is valid. Why not put yoursefl in the position of these MP dudes and try and see what they have been told to do and the onyl way there is to go about it.

I Agree 100% with this...I guess some people's lives are so sad and pathetic that they can get their shits and grins by going downtown and trying to pick a confrontation with a town patrol knowing their super cool awesome non-SOFA status will protect them threw it and rush back home so they can post about it on here. It's so pathetic that’s its funny to me, but hey whatever rocks your boat I guess....

They CAN'T that is the point. They have no juristiction off base.
PS If I am stopped my an MP I will show em my ID and be on my way. I know he/she is just doing their job and I can live with that.
What I do have a problem is these asshats who are NOT MPs and are NOT in a duty status that decide they wanna just be busy bodies and all up in private cictizens business and NCIS just cuz I hate them.:cursing:

Well I don't go out looking for it but if I am already out I do. Besides how is going out starting a confortation. Aren't they starting it by approaching the public?

Honestly I could careless who starts what, bottem line is it's funny some of you people get your jollies by hastling a town patrol that's simply doing their job, people want to act tough when there in a postion were they can be hard-headed. You could say your not SOFA and show em your proof and let them be on their way or be billy bad-ass and say "I don't have to show you shit" "**** off" etc... But if a couple of salty Marines were beating your face in the ground on gate 2, you would be more than happy to interact with a town-patrol and grateful for what they do. I've seen this type of stuff in Korea a lot with gov't contractors.

It's easy to rag on someone who has done something wrong, until it affects you directly.
This is a good case in point. All of us are complaining about someone who has committed a "STUPID" act. Someone who should have known better. We joke about it, until it affects us directly.
Once someone does something "stupid" to warrant this level of attention, it stops being a joke. Then you start blaming the "Government".
The attention shifts away from the people who have committed the infraction, because it's much easier than admitting that you've never taken the time to read through the contractual requirements, which you have signed.
A lot of stupid people out there, and not only the ones who have committed the crime of the week.
A lot of you out there, need to "Grow Up" !!!!!!:cursing:

I'm not buying the "put yourself in the girls parents shoes" argument. Are you saying the parents are rightfully blaming every SOFA person on the island for the actions of one incredibly dumbassed person?
With that line of logic, every Okinawan should stop driving because last week, a drunk and driving Okinawan woman pulled a U-Turn in front of a SOFA guy riding a motorcycle and put him in the hospital. Luckily he's not dead.
Get a grip - the only people those parents should be blaming is Tyrone and the girl (for getting on the back of his bike in the first place).
