View Full Version : What are you listening to lately?
Just thought this would be an interesting topic. Maybe an enlightening topic as well, as I'm always looking for new music.
What have you all been listening to lately?
I've been on a psychedelic trance hook for a few years and during my last trip to Osaka a few months ago I was lucky enough to hit up my favorite record shop--Cisco Records. Everytime I make it there, I always end up buying a few hundred dollars of new music.
Probably none of you share the love for the same genre of music as I do, but I'm enjoying the hell out of a group called DNA. I believe the album I purchased is called "Kick Me Up". If any of you guys are club kids or enjoy trance at all, I highly recommend this album.
I purchased 8 or 9 other CD's while I was out there, but this one has been in my stereo pretty much non-stop for the past few months.
On a more mellow note, my wife and I also enjoy Corinne Bailey Raye's self-titled album that came out in december. She's got a great voice.
I haven't heard much good rock lately though. I'm looking forward to any releases Radiohead decides to put out in the future. I haven't heard much rock lately that's made me go "wow".
What have you guys been listening to?

I like emote. I am into Train and Snow Patrol. The words to Train's "Ordinary (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/train/ordinary.html)" are just awesome(it was the soundtrack to Spiderman1).
For some reason, in music, when the singer wears their emotions on their sleeve, it really sucks me in. I think Train and Snow Patrol do that. Also, I notice that men doing the emot thing gets to me more. Perhaps it is the emotions from a man's perspective that I can relate to. Women have always been heavy with emotions in their music.
By the way, whenever a woman puts the word "bitch" in their lyrics, that for some reason just turns me on. I guess it just makes them kind of naughty and to some extent I like what all that conjures up.
I have always been a fan of progressive type music.
I will try to think of some more.

I have heard enough Blue October for the last 3mths, one would think the disc would be old news.....but I am still catching new meanings & underlying messages.
( Some of the oddest 'love' songs I have ever heard. *smile* )
Snow Patrol......weren't a couple of their songs featured on Grey's Anatomy? *smile*
Doubt any of you "cool" guys watch that "chic" show....if it's even playing over there.
In reality I am almost always behind the current when it comes to entertainment.
(I'll be the one on here in 11mths saying I got Snow Patrols debut album)
Edit:
Snow patrol's Chasing Cars , Make This Go On Forever,Open Your Eyes, Somewhere A Clock Is Ticking were on Grey's Anatomy.

Mostly cycling through Blue October, foiled and the new album by Linkin Park, Minuets to Midnight. Foiled I think is an excellent album with only a few songs I only kind of like, but I can listen through the whole album and enjoy it. Minuets to Midnight is still growing on me. A couple of songs are outstanding, but still unsure on the rest. It ususally takes me a couple of times listening through an album before I decide if I really like it or not.

I thought of you dk, when I heard these lyrics......
Sick of the dark ways, we march to the drumming.
Jump when they tell us they want to see jumping.
F#%& that, I want to see some fist pumping.
Risk something.
Take back what’s yours Say something that you know they might attack you for
cause I’m sick of being treated like I have before.
Like it’s stupid standing for what I’m standing for.
Like this war is really just a different brand of war.
Like it doesn’t cater the rich and abandon poor.
Like they understand you in the back of the jet, When you can’t put gas in your tank.
These f*%$#ers are laughing their way to the bank and cashing their check
asking you to have compassion, have respect.
For a leader so nervous in an obvious way
Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay
and the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
in the living room laughing like what did he say?
*Linkin Park, Minutes to Midnight, Hands Held High*
Wow, great lyrics. I might have to finally give those guys a listen.

Music may not be exactly your style, but the lyrics may "speak" to you a little.
I think the lyrics that make the most sense to me these days are John Mayer's "Waiting on the world to change (http://www.completealbumlyrics.com/lyric/130680/John+Mayer+-+Waiting+On+The+World+To+Change.html)".
and when you trust your television
what you get is what you got

they can bend it all they want
Few truer words have been spoken.

I mentioned If you know the words & the dance steps to that, I think it greatly ages you.....as I turn around and see one of the gals getting down with it.
Some music just needs to be allowed to die in its age, not resurrected over and over again to be made fun of.

Discovering J-Pop has opened up a new genre of music for me to collect. Yeah, I know I'm a 36 year old military man, but even I can't resist the bubblegum sweetness of PUFFY AMIYUMI. I've also been listening to another Japanese group called THE POLYSICS. Now that I'm back in the states I rely on cdjapan.com. I still don't know why Japan CDs are so expensive though.

I can't seem to get that song out of my head after hearing it on Guitar Hero II.
I've also been listening to Hilltop Hoods, The Herd, and Butterfingers which are all Aussie hip-hop groups. Really good lyrics, great beats, and just fun to listen to. If you are a fan of Jurassic 5 or that kind of music you will definately enjoy these guys. Go to youtube.com and search butterfingers FIGJAM and watch it. Listen closely to the lyrics cause they are genious!! I would like it but I'm at work and can't get on there :p
That one song "Waiting on the world to change" is a great song! I'm still waiting for Jack Johnson to put out his next album. I know he just put one out last year...but I can't get enough of his stuff.
Oh, and that one song by Rise Against- Like The Angel

I'm not sure what type of music it's classified under, but it's not rave. I looked it up once and I think they condsider it industrial metal, Tranz-Metal, or Neue Deutsche Harte. I am a major lyrical listener.
There are a few songs that I enjoy listening to that I like the beat, the melody or sometimes even just the chorus.
But for the most part I enjoy listening to the lyrics.
Thought that one had some decent lyrical content.
I listen mainly to the overall quality of the music. The way different musicians interact. But it really depends on the genre. With hip hop, I'm more into the lyrics than anything else, so it was the only thing I really paid attention to.

I only have two of their albums. I don't even know which ones aside from the fact that one of them is the original album for the "harder better faster stronger" song. Is that Discovery? I don't remember...
The other is some remix album, but I don't care much for it. I need to look into buying more of their music. Next time, I won't buy from CD shops in Jusco. They never carry everything, and I keep getting stuck buying a second CD that's not all that great.

I've been listening to Phil Hendrie,
The dude has a hilarious radio show
Phil H. rules!!! He was on here in L.A., but left the station he was at.....I need to hunt him down and see where he is now. Just laugh out loud funny, (which is something, 'cuz I view most radio as mediocre) He has great social commentary too. Check him out.

Those are the names of the cd's , but there's a lot of music that I want to put back into my library. BTO, Black Sabbath (prior DIO), The Allan Parsons Project, Gordon Lightfoot, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, MOTT the Hoople, Black Oak Arkansaw, BOSTON, ELO.......
Yeah, I'm with ya man.....I'm a really big UFO fan too. Especially their early bluesy live rock from Japan(C'mon Everybody, Who Do You Love, Boogie) Almost with a "garage" quality to it, plus it's fun to try to learn the lead guitar parts, because it's blues with no effects or B.S. That's my favorite type of music, just raw and bluesy and aggressive. Also like Stooges (Raw Power, Death Trip, New Values), Black Flag (Black Coffee), Armored Saint (Lesson Well Learned, False Alarm, On The Way)
I'm not stuck on listening to a bunch of old stuff, I also like a lot of new music, just not the popular radio junk. I like to listen to the local college radio stations, and I like a lot of what I hear, it's just that the flaky D.J.s play 15 songs in a row then don't even say what they played. That just sucks. I've gone online to their radio station website to get the playlist, but they blew that too.
If ya'll get a chance to download Armored Saint's On The Way, check out the lead guitar in it. I still get goosebumps when I hear it.

Yeah. I saw Led Zeppelin live in a sold out concert in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the summer of 71. I hitchhiked from Minneapolis to St. Paul without a concert ticket. Fortunately, I was able to buy a ticket from a scalper. I think I paid $8 for the ticket which I bought in the parking lot of the concert place. The regular price was $5. "Stairway to Heaven" was their final song. It was a very memorable concert for me. Sex, drugs and rock-n-roll, baby...well, two out of three ain't bad.

R.E.O. Speedwagon
Black Sabbath
Pink Floyd
Black Oak Arkansas
ELO (The Electric Light Orchestra: The Saucer Tour)
Styx
Chicago
Supertramp
Bad Company
Bad Company, was kind of lame, they just stood around and played. Some of the other concerts were awesome, just had to report to the clinic the next day for "Golden-Flow".

I just heard about tabletop Internet radios you can use like a satellite radio, anywhere you have a fast internet connection handy. So you are not limited to the Sirius and XM fare, but can preset any of thousands of real radio stations that put their programming on the internet. Any techies using one yet? I am very tempted and am going to do some research.
Right, it's nothing you can't do on your PC, but I would really like this wherever I hang out (in the house - so far no streaming in the car)

So, instead of typing up computer resources to liosten to streaming Internet radio, you buy a little box that looks like a radio and place it anywhere in range of your wireless LAN. It does exactly what your PC and browser do. As far as I can tell there are about 6 kinds on the market for $2-300, and one being sold from China now for $148.
They all have an LCD screen so you make menu-driven station selections by music genre, station location (city/state/country) and maybe one other criterion.
It sounds like what I need to get good new music where I want it in the house. Just trying to find a way to buy one and not pay too much for shipping. Google wifi radio for more information. There are between 5,000 and 10,000 radio stations on the internet now, but not all of them stream live 24/7.

The story goes- he had 17 tracks or 17 albums (or something like that) already recorded when he "died".

vowed to produce those pre-recorded tracks even though he was "gone".

I don't much listen to new music, but a new Bad Religion album came out last summer, and I picked it up. Much different than all the older stuff I loved as a kid, but they still manage to stay relevant. My favorite lyrics on the album are from a song called submission complete:
Young recruits never had a chance
enticed to the drill, admonished to dance,
early to rise,
early to shine,
life is long, but the end is nigh,
break the guilty trammels of yesteryear
remember how rejuvenation conquers all fears,
Lowly opportunists take commanding roles,
Then hawk ultimatums so their weakness won't show
the sad reflection
of dead ambition
You live for nothing,
Submission Complete
