I'm sipping awamori that actually has a faint tequila taste - Ten-son-kou-rin, 25%. Or have I just been sipping too long?
What's your favorite kind of awamori?

Don't have a favorite because I never keep a bottle of my own at home. Usually just sip on whatever kind everyone else is drinking.
Chatan Choro.....preferably the 43% type.

Is Zanpa shiro different from just Zanpa? I don't think Zanpa has much of any distinctive taste at all.

Masahiro as a keep at the local watering hole (it's the stuff they discount). Tatsu Gold at home (cheap and good) for usual sipping. Chatan Choro 43* for special occasions with the old man. Zampa Kuro for the wife......for her cooking awamori.
Only drink it on the rocks. If it can't taste good and be smooth on it's own then it's no good for me.
Pretty much any proper kusu will keep me happy. Stopped buying Zampa Shiro/Kuro the day I had something else. If I'm offered some, I'll oblige.
It's Kikuno-tsuyu VIP and nothing else.
Man... dangerous stuff...

Tatsu - I will look for some. What is the kanji? Dragon?
Long time Tatsu fan. Also like Chatan Choro, and Poco a Poco original.
Although last time I had Chatan Choro I quit drinking for a few months due to the consumption of two full bottles of it all to myself and the second bad blackout of my life, and my wife almost calling 911 and taking pics of me naked on the bathroom floor.............
If all they have is Kuro Zampa, it's good only when mixed with Sanpin Cha and lemon...........
Yes gold label and black dragon
Made in Kin. You can find it almost anywhere. Great and cheap........
Old guy, did the Ten-son-kou-rin, have a clear bottle, wood cork and ribbon around the neck? Can't remember the name, but good and a little pricier than others.........

I got a new handle! (OK, it works)
Yeah, it's long gone but I think that's the right bottle. I got it at one of the shops where they give tastes, maybe 3000 yen or so.

Zanpa is sort of bland but it gets the job done. I'm looking for an awamori with some more character. I tried Tatsu, it's OK but I think there are better. Any more suggestions?

Well...I have been rather silent on this tastey subject but since there has been a request here for something with character I could not help myself and saw I had to respond. :D
Ok here is one that is not very well know down south here but can be found rather easily at Altec. Ippon Matsu made by Tamanaha Shuzou 玉那覇酒造工場, there is also one with a green label

I would also recommend Kikunotsuyu's

Edited to add...
I am just sharing the one's I have drank and enjoyed there are as you probably know hundreds of different types of Awamori here in Okinawa. Someday I am going to have to get started on trying them all out.

I think even the standard cheap bottle of Kikunotsuyu is pretty good. It is the local favorite in many izakaya. Definitely more earthy and full-bodied than Zanpa White and some of the other very smooth awamori aimed at the tourist market.

I agree!
Seems to me that the one's that are often seen on TV commercials are not the one's that taste the best.

Anyone know where to order awamori in the US? I'm looking for Yattaruzo but something such as Kikunotsuyu will also do nicely.
Or maybe one of you have an awamori shipping operation I can take you up on? ;)
of course... i'll also need an empty Orion can so i can cut the top off and put ice and water inside.

i have tasted a few types of awamori and they all taste nasty to me
Did you drink them straight up or mix with something? Sometimes its a good thing to start off with a weak mix. Blend it with some tea and maybe some lemon. I usually just mix it with some water. For me it tastes better the more I drink, then again most drinks usually do:thumbup1:

Awamori must be an acquired taste just like Goya.... I have only tried 2 kinds and both went down like battery acid. Give me some Sake over Awamori any day.

OMG, are you trying to generate another snitstorm about cultural insensitivity???
I don't think it's the same sort of acquired taste as for goya. It's just a neutral spirit like vodka, and like vodka it's good mixed with something.
I think it's interesting though that the Okinawans just cut it with ice and water. Very spartan style of boozing, but it works for them. Those big bottles aren't just for show.
YMMV, but I like the fact that I don't get a hangover from it, probably because it is very pure.

Ouch! And you're with child, I believe?
I occasionally slug it straight when I am pissed off and need to feel the effects Rat Now, but it's much better when it builds up gradually.

It was first licensed by Sunkist Growers to General Cinema Corporation, which was the leading independent bottler of Pepsi-Cola products at the time. The soft drink was the idea of Mark Stevens, who foresaw the potential based on market research which indicated that, worldwide, orange was the third best selling soft drink flavor (largely due to The Coca-Cola Company's Fanta brand).
After extensive R&D during 1977 and early 1978, in which research was conducted on taste, color and carbonation levels, Sunkist made a grand introduction in New York (interestingly by franchising it to The Coca-Cola Bottling Company of New York, where Edward F. O'Reilly was president). At the time of introduction, Sunkist Soft Drinks had only five key employees (Mark Stevens, President; Peter Murphy, VP Sales; Dr. John Leffingwell, VP R&D; Ray Sissom, VP Finance; and Jim DeDreu, NE Regional Manager). It went national soon thereafter by being franchised mainly to leading Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola bottlers. The advertising was "fun, sun and the beach" using TV and radio commercials based on the Beach Boys' hit song "Good Vibrations" as the brand's theme. In 1980, Sunkist Orange Soda became the #1 orange soda in the USA and the 10th best selling soft drink. Unlike many other competing orange sodas, Sunkist contains caffeine.
In late 1984, Sunkist Soft Drinks was sold to Del Monte. From late 1986 until 2008, it was produced by Cadbury Schweppes under license through its Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages subsidiary. Following the demerger of Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages from Cadbury Schweppes, it is now produced by Dr Pepper Snapple Group in the USA. It is still the most popular orange soda in the United States. Sunkist (as a carbonated soft drink) is sold in the UK by Vimto Soft Drinks under license from Sunkist Growers. It is also sold in Australia.
The CW TV series, One Tree Hill features Sunkist regularly. In one episode, Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) sports a Sunkist tee. In another the teens are dancing in bar and there is a Sunkist sign and in another one Rachel (Danneel Harris) opens a fridge and there are several Sunkist cans
