Hundreds of angry Okinawans marched in front of the Marine Corps Bases headquarters Tuesday, demanding Americans “Go away from Okinawa” following the arrest of a 38-year-old Marine non-commissioned officer on rape charges. Protest leader Shiko Sakiyama of the Okinawa Peace Campaign Center led the multi-group demonstration by more than 300 irate citizens, voicing his anger, over the fact “America walked over Okinawan people’s human rights.

300 people to react on short notice for the actions taken against one person is pretty good. Trust me, the numbers will grow, people will come from mainland and it will get ugly, unless the facts of this story change things.

There's already enough disturbing facts out about this from the statements given alone that can incite a few less-than-friendly rallies.

Doc I agree with you here. I wonder what "facts" though that could possibly be brought to light that will stop the snowball that seems to be headed towards morphing into a multi-headed alien/predator combination.
The damage is done....

Well my view on this subject has changed slightly...I overheard from someone that should be a reliable source close to this matter......
Its not as clear cut as the news is trying to make it out to be. Im not really sure why this person was talking about this incident in public, but I happened to overhear it. The guy will still be fried for 'forcing a kiss', but I would be surprised if anything more.

Your absolutely correct: from mainland: Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura said the incident could affect the planned realignment of the U.S. military bases in Japan.
"I think we've had enough of these incidents," he said. "The issue of discipline in the U.S. military will remain important wherever the U.S. bases are relocated. They should follow strict discipline."
On Monday, Shinichi Nishimiya, the director general of the North American affairs bureau at the Foreign Ministry, communicated with Joseph Donovan, deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy, and asked the U.S. to strengthen discipline of its military to prevent a recurrence.

well despite whatever he had no business with a 14 yr old no matter what country...no excuse....If I had a 14yr and a 38 yr old hitting on my child, well I would do more than frying...surely there's plenty of 18 and above gals anywhere, furthermore there is no excuse for rape...

I had an interesting conversation with a 28-year old local lady. I asked her how her friends look at it, and she said that most of them think Marines are "bad" but AF is OK.

Lol!.....guess you weren't here in 95 to see the protests about the last rape.
My wife was telling me last night that at her job the female Japanese staff were talking about this case and the overwhelming majority of the women while deploring the alleged assault also were saying that there was something "wrong" with the girl as well, particularly at that age getting onto a motorcycle with a complete stranger.
They were also questioning the supposed "ability" of this guy to speak enough Japanese and know about "women" as well, because if they had been talking together for a while previous to the bike ride he should have enough sense to realize that these girls and the one he took for a ride were young kids. Particularly for a man his age. Unless he was looking for someone "that" age.

These people do not realize that the American or military community play a large part for their economy & the many jobs that their locals hold on the bases. Protest & demand that the perpetrator to be punished, that's understandable. However, are these people being rational about this? Crime is low here in comparison to the U.S & I believe that majority of the Americans or military people behave themselves.

I have to agree with you statistically speaking we should be committing more crimes, and the Japanese commit just as heinous crimes on themselves. (not that, that justifies our crimes we should commit 0) But what do they think the long term effect will be if all military bases close? Will tourism suddenly jump to replace that hundreds of millions of dollars annually spent here? Will mainlanders flock here and pay 2K a month rent for something an Okinawan can rent for 1k? Will the 8000 or so MLCs suddenly unemployed find jobs making the same money? I doubt things will be as bad as the PI but the local economy here will collapse and they will need to increase output of brown sugar and pineapple by 1000%, and build some tourist attractions here that you wont be tired of in in 2 hours. I can only say be careful what you ask for you just may get it someday.

The ting about the rent is most of those rentals are owned by mainland japanese companies.

Also here is a note: did you know all the japanese employees on Base are paid for by the Japanese Government.

lol...You are new here Nate. That issue (MLC and IHA) has been discussed a lot. And many of us here have those individuals working for them. My first clue they were paid for by the GOJ was when I wasn't paying them! lol

30% is paid by the US Government and do you think the Japanese Government will continue to pay them 70% of their salaries for doing nothing?

Yeah they only work about 30percent so I guess the united states is paying the full bill. I guess Japan gets off easy.

I don't really understand here... Since my Wife is an MLC and my best friends handles the budget that goes to all the army bases... I have it on good authority that most people that talk about the Japanese paying this and the U.S. paying that... really have almost no clue what they are talking about.
I'm not trying to shoot anyone down for what they posted... i just think that should check facts and figures alittle more closely before letting out bunk info

such an unfortunate incident that will hurt relations for years to come. The people I talked to that know they guy say they are not surprised but having gone and worked at a Japaneses school to say the girls there are promiscuous is is putting it lightly. He put himself in a situation he cant win. Weather he did it or not.
Japanese taxi driver molests an 8 year old boy barely even made the news. An American does something and its everywhere. I am glad we are seen as the best and such high standards are expected of us but for the same to happen and its not an American and they dont "rally and hold protests" shows how hypocritical these protesters really are. I am out of the military now and live here. I have to say I think the military should leave here and go to Guam or some other place. Its best for everyone. I know it not as easy as that but it should be.

Yup you are right, it will hurt relations until either the bases are gone or until the nezt rape occurs.

Yeah, well take the other 70% and blow it out your @$$! Over 90% of our locals do good work, a much better rate than many of the GI's...

Interesting article on the one convict though. Hey, none of this has to do with anyone's employment. This is getting way more air time than what is actually occuring...as usual.
The DoD is still hiring here, and nothing is on hold.

Thats the way it should be. Seems a lot of ppl are scared to tell tham anything. At least that's what I saw. But other ppl at other units said their MLCs were good workers so I guess it's all in the leadership just like anywhere else.

So the term "my employees" is better for you? Sorry if you saw offence in "mine" as I am using the laptop, I find it difficult to adapt my large fingers to the small keys and type more tersely.
The GOJ's MLC's I am blessed to have working for me? Also, for servants, they are making damn good pay.

Get one of those big ass notebook computers. I got one with a 17 inch widescreen monitor, kinda big for a notebook. But, no problems fumbling with a small keyboard! Only downside is once I take it traveling, it's not as compact as those tiny ones.
