The new legal music download service Qtrax starts today in the US & UK.

Do you think the launch of this service will help revitalize the music business, and do you plan to try it?

I might give it shot, I can understand the issues with music and movies but I wish they would allow people outside of CONUS to watch tv shows online instead of always getting the"this content is not available in your area" error message. But good find

I recommend the use of a CGI proxy if you are getting messages like that when trying to watch streaming TV and other media.

You can also google for proxies. There are a lot of choices out there to assist you in getting the media you want.

I think music and tv shows should always be free. It is stupid for them to try and make us pay for something we can just record ourselves.

I hope this site sticks to being a p2p site with free music and not go the way of Napster. The music industry is fat enough as it is and has been double and triple dipping the consumers for a while now. You pay to see the show, to buy the tape, then the CD, now per every song that you would like to download and pretty soon they wont even allow you to rip your own music onto your HDD. Bands that play good music will surely get my support. I will pay for their CD. But not some exuberant amount. And once I buy it I will not feel guilty for downloading tracks for free if its to replace the ones on a broken or scratched CD. I just think music is one of those things that shouldn't cost a lot and would prefer it to be free. I prefer live music and I love it even more when it doesn't cost me anything.

I believe in the movement of ideas and culture! Free music is great, but I still try to support the bands that I really enjoy.
I've recently fallen in love with a two-piece band named El Ten Eleven. Definitely recommend taking a listen.
I'll be ordering their albums soon.
I wish I had the opportunity to see a few of the bands I really like live, but that won't be a reality until I get back to the States.

Is this Qtrax something like Limewire?

I guess it isn't similair to limewire. Is limewire illegal?

I don't think the software, or sharing of certain info via P2P protocols and networks is illegal, per se, but that sharing copyrighted material is. Laws do vary by country.

Then I wonder how Limewirre has been up for so long? I know that my former music site albumbase.com got shut down by the feds.

Limewire is P2P software, not a file-sharing site. The software is not illegal, as there are legitimate uses. Internet sites sharing copyrighted material, on the other hand...
