View Full Version : How do you view your vehicle?

Years ago (and to some extent still today) I was very interested in Native American studies and often read books and articles on them. One thing that stuck in my mind that a few books had said was how the Apache viewed their horses. Basically they viewed them as nothing more than a tool to run down until it no longer worked, then slaughter it and consume it.

Jumping to the vehicles of today, how do you for the most part view your motor vehicle? I would say these are the three typical views:

A tool
A toy
A status symbol

I view mine as a tool. I seldom wash it; it gets messy inside; I am more than satisfied that it gets me or whatever I am transporting from point A to point B; I have no emotional feeling of fondness for it; I give it the basic maintenance so that it operates.

And when it is time to junk it or trade it in, I won't feel any loss.

How about you? Or perhaps there are some views you could add that you have towards your car that are not on the list.

well I'm a major car guy, so I would have to say since I have 2 cars.. one is defintaly a toy, take it out on weekends and nice days. while the other, altho I still take care of it, is just a tool that gets me from points A to B.

I also have a tendancy to judge people by their cars.. I know its not an accurate judge of character, but I think it gives me a rough idea of how the person lives or thinks.

Ours is just a tool. It's not a bad car, but I just don't care for it too much one way or the other. I'm really not a car person.

I used to think of myself as a car guy, but there needs to be something special for this to kick in. Our 2 cars now are so utilitarian and boring that I can't get excited about maintenance or driving.

My Corolla was bred to be a slave, although I will keep it tuned/oil changed, and repair any little glitch that pops up. Something I like about really keeping up on maintenance on my cars.....kind of like to see how far I can make them last. They may not have a soul, but they do respond to attention. My '91 Dodge 4X4 has 550,000 miles on it, and runs great.

All my other cars are like shoes.....different ones for different destinations. Someday I'll have to show the extent of my illness.:)

Definitely a tool a for us. Just something to get us from here to there until we leave the island.

I think thats the view of about 95% of the military on island. The problem I have is that they think everyone elses car is the same and could care less if they door ding you or bump into it in the parking lot.. "its just an Oki car.. why dod you care?"

Dont want to get this off topic, but I feel its kinda relevent... I still spent very good money on my "tool" and would like it to last me for e long time.

YOU sir..... Are the real TOOL!!! :D

I think of my vehicle as a tool. It gets me from point A to B. I did choose my particular vehicle for its reliablity and ease driving around the island. I do keep it clean inside and out and make sure all the regular maintenance is done. That is just a simple pride that I take in my home and other possessions as well.

I don't really see a vehicle you buy here as disposable. I look at it more as an investment. Being able to get as much back as you bought it for or more is always a plus once you go to move.

Mine is a tool as far as it getting me from home to work and back again. But its also a luxurious tool.:) I look at mine more as a cruise ship than a tool.:D And its definitely not an Oki car, don't want people dinging my doors either.:)

Another car guy here. If I had the big bucks, I'd probably have a huge warehouse for all my "toys" like Jay Leno does.

My neighbors alway give me sh!t for washing my car when it doesn't even look dirty - to them ;)

We have 4 vehicles. Only one of them is for taking a relaxing drive or entertaining guests the rest are just tools for work

Well, with choices that were given, I'd have to say a comfortable tool.

We took some of our daughter's friends on base for lunch the other day, and she was nuts about the car. Ours has the new "Smart Key" technology, so instead of inserting a key, you push a button to start/stop the engine. Dual air, variable fan/temp controls, cd player, but no turbo, or GPS.

The dash lights come on automatically, courtesy of light sensors built into the dash, and a bell rings to let me know if I'm about to hit something while backing up to park. I like to keep it clean inside, and out.

it would appear to me that with the exception of 2-3 people, this forum really doesnt need an auto section because there are no car guys. its like having a hunting and wildlife section on a kitchen and bathroom design forum.

wasted bandwidth.

Getting back to the OP here.....
how do you for the most part view your motor vehicle

Well for the most part I use my eye's. Plain and simple to me.

Sometimes I see it in pictures, however for the most part just my eye's and the eye's of others that look at it wondering how in the hell do I fit my overly large frame into a sardine can that small.

You say my car is lame and then you want to give me a skyline? Well......is it a least a turbo one? Though I'd rather have a silvia S15 or a newer integra Type R:thumbup:

Yeah I had problems with hills in my wife's non turbo kei. I had to drop it into first while going up a hill in the love motel area. I was suprised because it actually lunged forward and chirped the tires a bit. It's not a bad car for being so small but it can be a pain because my feet are big and the clutch peddle is so small so my feet get a little cramped down there.

I don't even know what I'm going to buy, but I need to get a new car soon.

this is just something that people with diahatsu miras say.

no no, i know, skylines are just for people who are retard noob punks, youre too cool for that, so you got a toyota ipsum. much much more slick, right?

how about you downplay retard punk noobs rather than the car a lot of them try to jock, when we all know damn well they roll in rusted out 4 door non turbo automatic models?

that is because most of the morons driving the street cars can't drive, and have no idea how to fix the car if it stops running. Sad day when I can take curves faster in my truck then some moron in a sylvia, 180, skyline, enter any other wanna be sports car.

Not trying to attack you, but you seem to have had your panties in a bunch all day.

Wow......are you serious sword? Everybody buys a car for a different reason. Just because one person likes a particular type of car over another or thinks car model A is crap and car model B is better doesn't mean they're a "punk n00b" for not being obsessed with the car model that you like. Some people want/need a larger slower car for hauling dive stuff, kids, or anything else around and some people would rather try and cram 2 adults into the back seat of a RX7. But hey, to each their own.

Or maybe we should all just like nissan skylines? Seems like thats what every other 19 year old single airman with a 4000 dollar loan out on their non turbo skyline likes:rolleyes:.

PS: Feel free to substitute any car model in for skyline in the last sentence. It could be 180, silvia, sileighty, prelude, laurel, supra, RX7, etc.....

Oh and I don't know what you're talking about, ipsum vans are the shit! Because of that awesome rear AC they're right up there on the top of my list of "cars I wish I could take back to the states" with the step wagon and stream. But they did sell the old ipsums in the states IIRC.

no one is butthurt here. im just laying out the simple fact that people with diahatsu miras and cars of the such talk endless shit about skylines.King of ASSumptions at it again! Who is to say that the guy cursing to work in his mira doesn't have some type of bad ass tuner in his garage for the weekends? Well since you're assuming things I think I'll join in. I bet you were one of those guys back in the states who drove around his Mustang GT that mommy and daddy bought him thinking he was fast as shit? Only to get smoked by some tuned out VW rabbit.

your little 4k dollar equation is accurate for an R32 NA automatic RB20E POS, and i know im speaking greek to you.Hmmm let' see. R32 would be the generation of skylines right before the 1995 you were trying to sell (R32 is one of my favorite model years). NA would be naturally aspirated and RB20E is the engine model number. Oh and POS means PIECE OF SHIT! See what happens when you ASSume things? Oh and if you paid 4k for a skyline like the one you described then you must be one of those first termer types who just wanted a skyline and didn't know jack shit about them when he got over here.

to each his own. i dont give a damn about world of warcraft and warm walks in baba park. you dont give a damn about having a car that shits all over 600cc sportbikes with the AC running.Travis, is that you? Or was your previous screen name Metrichotrods? Fail again!
