Hi i am Australian, 21, female and i am looking for work in the Naha area. I have a working holiday visa good until September, i am already in Okinawa (currently working for a military family as a nanny), i know basic Japanese (hiragana, katakana, some kanji and basic conversation) but i am planning on going to a language school in Naha, i do not have my lisence and i do not have a uni degree.

Does anyone know of any jobs or where i can look for a job (online or otherwise)? or of anyone that does? I don't have alot of working experiance but what i have is in hospitality, child care, shop assistance, english teaching (unofficial) and other random jobs. I am friendly, hard working and always happy to learn new things.

If i dont find something that can pay for my tution and living i will probably end up moving to Tokyo, but i really want to stay in Okinawa for a little longer.

Any help i can get would be greatly appreciated.

p.s.
Sorry for posting heaps of annoying things like this...

Have you looked into what the Japan Association for Working Holiday Makers JAWHM has? http://www.jawhm.or.jp/eng/index.html
Just remember that you're not meant to take work in places like nightclubs or dance halls - not that that stops people doing so.

If you're looking to stay in Japan longer, you'd need to find a job where the employer is willing to act as your visa sponsor. A task easier said than done.

At this time of year, lots of schools are looking to hire English teachers on year-long contracts for the school year beginning in April. There might be some things listed on the Urasoe English Homepage.

Some towns that hire foreigners living locally are Naha, Urasoe, Ginowan, and Okinawa City. You can visit their Boards of Education to find out more. (I recommend bringing along a Japanese-speaking friend)

I believe though that for a teaching position in a Japanese school that you need a tertiary (college, university) degree in order to qualify for the appropriate type of visa and the OP says she doesn't posses this. I may be wrong though.

Small, independant English school/tutor programs would be a better idea. Perhaps when your walking around look out for English schools and just go in and ask about employment or put an advertisment out there looking for students to tutor in English.

On the mainland dispatch companies are very popular for Japanese schools. Basically, the dispatch company employs you and send you out to school/workplaces when they request someone, kinda like temp work. Dont know of any in Oki, but wouldn't suprise me if some exist.

Last suggestion. Try networking with other non-Japaneses on this island who are not connected to the military, they might be able to suggest places looking for teachers etc.

You could also try World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF).

I would recommend opening up a meat pie shop. Aussies make the best meat pies. They make a great late night snack. If you put it in the right location it might do well. Be advised...the three off base Subway sandwich shops didn't work out. You could also teach 'Strine classes.

ugh! first, i don't talk like that!
and second, i hate people who do talk like that. It sounds so...stupid
most people don't talk like that (or at least not that bad) and the ones who do are from the country towns (i'm from the city, for the record).

also, just because i'm from Australia dosent mean i cook pies well (i cook cookies and cakes well ^_^)

*sigh* i need a job! I got a job at a bar near gate 2 (7th heaven) but now the military can't drink or go out past 10pm there is no work for me!! :'(

but when i do start working there, everyone should come! a non-compulsary uniform my boss suggested was a budwiser girl dress O.O so i'm looking forward to nice tips ;)

I'm thinking I would rather be a drinkie girl than slave on a farm for six hours for food and "exposure." lol.

Six hours of sato kibi will kill anyone.

You just have to make sure the announcement is open to people without SOFA status. If it is, then get your paperwork together, then you can make an appt. with CHRO for them to meet you at the gate, sign you in, and collect your paperwork.
