There are a few places that I like to eat on island that I don't hear others talk much about. 1 of the places is a Thai restaurant called som chai. The other is 50's burger, which is right outside Kadena Gate 2, near 4 corners. I thought the burgers were excellent. Now, these places could be very well-known, but they aren't in my social circles. Any suggestions for other little-known places?

Mont Blanc (just off gate 2 street next to Plaza Video) has yummy yakisoba.

Kitanaka Soba (on rte 81 at the top of the hill before rte 329) is pretty good also. My mom eats there a lot, in spite of what her doctors say.

Ummm...Genki's! :D Great sushi place. I've never heard Crocodiles talked about on here, it's pretty good! And if you go on a really rainy day, you get free cake!!

Soba Noodles...I have a love, hate relationship with them. I prefer Ramen, Udon, Somen, then everything else before Soba, BUT.....There is a place right outside Camp Hansen that has the BEST Soba Noodles I've ever had.

If you go out the front gate of Camp Hansen, make a left.

Go all the way across Kin and leave town.

You'll drive over a bridge and then a place that sells stone statues, Buddha's, Lions, etc. on the left.

Right after a Suzuki shop on the left hand side is a white building. Inside is a restaurant.

Ask for the Yasai Soba. I love that place, I actually crave their soba. It has a smokey flavor and the vege's are awesome.

There is a place on 58 just before coming into Nago called Columbin. They have a really good grilled garlic chicken platter and the prices are fair. I fed a family of 5 for Y5000.

It's on 330.
When you get out of Foster Legion Gate, turn right keep going straight.
You'll see King Taco's on the left then the over walk. Keep going straight.
It's near the Futenma Antique store.
It's on the left side before the small San-A grocery store.
"Sky Anzel Building" 7th Floor. It's a Jamaican Bar & Restaurant.:thumbup1:

Tsubaki ya in Uruma. They have a wide variety of food, and I'm especially fond of their spicy chicken and tuna rolls. They have great fried rice, and a seafood pizza that's pretty tasty as well. The atmosphere is casual, and the staff are extremely courteous and helpful. Big Orions for 250 Yen! I crave this place when I'm NOT locked down.

It's located on route 75, about a 1/4 mile from route 8. If you get off on exit five, go straight through the light (on route 36) to the 75 and turn left. After passing route 8, keep an eye out for Tsubaki ya on the left (large wooden front of building with a barber shop next door). If you see Steak Capital on your right, you just passed Tsubaki ya.

Coulda sworn there was a Burger's thread in here but I cannot seem to find it - probably in the miscellaneous section or something.

Well, I just had the best buger I have had since 'Burgers' closed down and I am sure some of you know it but for those of you who don't....

Hamburger [B]GORDIES[B]

If you go down the road outside of Gate 1, the signal beside the Family Mart
and take that road going down to the sea wall, you turn right at the first traffic lights you come to. Keep driving straight for a few mins, and you will see a small sign on the left side of the road for 'Gordie's. Turn left and it is there. Tel.no. 926-0234, in case you can't find it.

Think everything was about 750yen- 780yen, but they were big and tall.

Chubby's BBQ restaraunt... went there and the Ribs are great.

Leaving Kadena Gate 2, go straight across the intersection (4 Corners). Continue straight...you will pass the zoo, go down the hill all that...just stay straight. When you get to the Mos Burger, that will be on the left corner, go straight some more, about 150 ft from the corner is Chubby's., (pink sign with white lettering)...

If you like ramen try Big Diachan(sp?). Someone once told me it used to be called Popeye's and was closer to Four Corners. Good ramen and very high on the food to yen ratio. The word "big" is in the name for a reason. The servings are huge. When I take the kids and will usually order a ramen set (800Y) which comes with rice, chicken cultlet, salad and vinegared seaweedand. The kids will eat the chicken and rice. They don't just have ramen. You can get soba, udon, and also a few chinese dishes like sweet and sour chicken. It is a small mom and pop place with no money wasted on decor, so don't expect anything fancy.

Directions: From Kadena gate 2, turn Left on 23, then right on 85. Continue past the Tupperware building on the right. At the next stop light (you will see a Good Boy hair cut place across the intersection on the left corner and a Apple Co-Op across on the right corner) turn left. Just past the Kane Hide grocery on the right look for a yellow and red sign all in Kanji, except there will be a silouette of a noodle bowl with "Big" written on it. That is the place. It is directly accross the street from the park.

Oh, they have have some english menus and a few on staff that speak some English. They are open for lunch and dinner and on Sundays it is often packed with families and sometimes not even room at the counter to sit.

Enjoy.

When a place tells me that I can ONLY have my hamburger well-done, I immediately become suspicious. I'll stick to the Tony Roma's which is only 5 minutes away.

GREAT onion rings, good fries, soup, salad. and drink which IMHO more than compensates for the price differential.

Oh, and that other place Jet City. I'm totally at a loss how any american can consider either of those places even vaguely resembling a real hamburger.

Yeah, Jet City was pretty bad but I thought Gordies was awesome for the price. Not sure why they would only serve well done but mine was great and juicy. Are you afraid they are using some sort of rancid beef that they couldn't possibly serve medium/rare? Tasted good and fresh.

Dear Ryukuchina,

On the occasions few and far between, when I indulge my native lingering affection for a good ole american hamburger, I like it cooked medium. Usually, ANY place that offers ONLY well-done, does so due to fears of not being able to sufficiently destroy bacteria.

If the establishment has fears of bacterial content, then I'd rather pass.

At Tony Roma's, they accept orders throughout the spectrum ranging from nearly raw to well-done. The double burger with the accompanying fries, onion rings, awesome cole slaw, soup, salad, and drink compares VERY favorably to the perceived price differential of Gordies.

Tie me down and flog/flail me before I would ever venture to Jet City EVER again.

As for other places here, a hamburger with panko crumbs and or other vegetables is meatloaf (by another name) in my book, and I an uninterested in meatloaf when I want a hamburger, plus dear ole' Mom's recipe (accompanied by mashed potatos) which I copy is by far the best for me.

bacterial content is in ALL meat, and the heat kills it. do you think some places fear it is in their air or something?

you can cook a burger in the taj mahal or on the hood of a junkyard car, neither grilling surface will have bacteria because of the heat. its in the meat.

I've only been to Tany Roma's once a few years ago and as with any other chain restaurant that claims to be famous for ribs (Chilis), I ordered the ribs and was very disapointed as I was first time I tried the ribs at Chilis. I guess I'll have to go back to Tony's and try the burger. Anyone know why the best rib joints are little family run, heard of only by word of mouth hole's in the wall and chains like Chilis and Tony Roma's claim to the world that they're famous for ribs and then they serve the worst?

I'll keep bacteria in mind if I re-visit Gordies, thanks for the heads up.

Good point, maybe Gordies just can't afford to lose customers/catch a case due to the slight possibilty someone orders a rare burger and get's sick. Where a large chain could afford the risk.

"Thanks" for the advice dr. gecko; but:

"To be sure bacteria are destroyed, cook hamburgers to 160 F (medium doneness) or until the center is no longer pink and the juices are clear."

It is TOTALLY unnecessary to cook good beef to well-doneness to ensure food safety

I don't know about ribs but if you're looking for a decent steak that isn't too expensive you can go to pizza house Jr. I usually have them deliver it to my apartment and they're fairly quick about it too. Only thing I noticed is that I have to order it well done. Normally I get medium but whenever I order medium from pizza house jr. and have it delievered it ends up being rare and not medium. While if I order it well done it's kinda medium well, which is a little too cooked for me but better than rare.

ITA. Best ribs are homemade and they take all day. Our little dinky grill isn't large enough so I have not had homemade ribs in over a year +. Naps ribs were gross BTW. I like mine dry rubbed and then MAYBE a sauce out on 30 minutes before eating them. ::: drool ::: Ribs, potato salad, corn bread, Italian salad (broccoli, cauliflower, and cherry tomatoes in Italian dressing) and homemade wine was our family dinner of choice.

My dad's cousin was the sommelier and wine master for events. All his recipes are secret but his wine was usually, although some batches were odd and flopped, awesome. He makes a kick ass strawberry/raspberry rhubarb wine that is very good. My favorite is always the wild grape, red raspberry, or blackberry.

No, my family is not Italian but we go through wine like we are. :D At least my dad's side. My mom's side is all "dry."

Up in Onna, is a little place called the Seaside Resturant. they have a pretty goo triple decker ham samich. They use the thick off-base bread and the thick Oki-Ham. Tasty and cheap. They also have a pretty cool salt water fish tank in there and an ocean view. I mostley just order from the outside walk-up counter and eat on the little sea wall they have there and watch the ocean.

Tony Roma's steak isn't half bad. I used to buy those on payday as that was the closest to my office that I could get a decent steak that I knew of. It's not really American style steak or huge or anything, but it was tasty.

You've got to be kidding me... The only redeeming factor about Tony Roma's steak is that you can have a steak delivered to your door... Unless the Pizza House Jr. in Minatogawa, Urasoe City is just crap. Not saying I won't order it, because I will again and have in the past. But man, that's lazy boy steak. 1) I don't have a grill.

2) I don't even know where to find decent steak off-base if I did have a grill. Even if I did find it at the same quality as that sold on-base, it'd probably cost an arm and a leg. I could be wrong though.

Hopefully, these two problems will be solved soon enough.

Hopefully, these two problems will be solved soon enough.

Understood.

But, hopefully soon this will change.

1) I could give you my extra grill (little smokey joe, great for a balcony)

2) you'll be able to buy steaks on base soon enough. $10 for 2 decent steaks.

1) I might take you up on that when I land that base job.

2) I can already smell the steak cooking. :D

And you live how far away from me?

I've got the grill, I've got the steak. Bring your own fixin's, tell me in advance, it's yours.

But I'll be damned if I'll open my door at 01:00, or 04:00, in the morning when you get get back from whatever party that you've attended the previous evening.:cursing:

You've got to be kidding me... The only redeeming factor about Tony Roma's steak is that you can have a steak delivered to your door... Unless the Pizza House Jr. in Minatogawa, Urasoe City is just crap. Not saying I won't order it, because I will again and have in the past. But man, that's lazy boy steak. It's not horrible, but I wouldn't even qualify it as worthy of a post hehe.

It's fast, I don't have to go anywhere, and it's not all that bad. If I'm tired after work and I don't feel like going anywhere, then it really starts sounding delicious!

I felt bad after recommending it that someone found their burgers lacking, but I still think that they're the closest thing around for an AMERICAN style (100% beef) burger; but like tis said different strokes/different folks.

No need to feel bad. Like you said - differet strokes. I just didn't think it was too great. I truly thought Gordies had allot more flavor.

Churuguwa (sp) is what I believe you're referring to. They have some decent Champuru but I'd definitely go somewhere else for Soba. Theirs is decent but there's way better in the area, like Gabusoka (check the soba thread). Other than that I think the place is always busy cause they're consistently decent and fairly inexpensive, plus people probably just like hearing Nihedebiru and Mensore instead of Arigato Gozaimasu and irashaiimase (sp), for some sort of novelty effect perhaps....

Churuguwa is not bad but every time I go there I think about this:

Nihedebiru say that 3 times fast and it sounds like "need a beeru?"

Anyone? Anyone?:p:p

Screw you guys.... I'm going home.

Yeah, thought I'd make it a little more simple and welcoming. Plus I figured people would figure it out when they saw me digging up food threads.

BTW, who's this new Isaak Brodsky character? J/K......

Anyone ever heard of some place in Naha called maybe the Dollar Cafe and like at certain times everything is a dollar or something like that? It's been a couple years since I heard about it and never got the chance to try it.

I figured out how to post a link to my google map. For the ramen house listed above you can get directions from the map below. It is labled Big Ramen.

I am not sure but he may be reffering to this post earlier. The Chili Shrimp Ramen is good there too. :thumbup1:
