As long as HD DVD holds on to Paramount and Universal, HD-DVDs aren't going anywhere. Blu-Ray I think is a better format, but companies that rival Sony won't let HD-DVD go under. Not just yet at least. But with the first HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo drives already in the works, the battle won't matter anymore (to the consumer, that is).

I agree with you retributionnk. I don't think it'll go away anytime soon.

They already sell combo HDD-DVD/ Blu-ray players but you can buy separate
players for less money than a combo player. Well in the U.S. anyways.:D

One format will eventually win out and I'm pretty sure it will be Blu-ray.

However by the time this format war is over a new format will be coming out.:cursing:

I just saw Sony is selling a new Blu-ray reader for PC for $200.

If Sony does win out, it really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Although regular DVDs weren't a proprietary format, Sony single-handedly ensured their success by releasing playstation 2. It was the same price as a DVD player at the time, and had the bonus of being a then 'next-gen' gaming console. Those guys are smart, and I hate to see anyone be so damned financially savvy! That being said, I've always been a Playstation loyal, but I've held off on the PS3 because of that heavy price tag. Looks like maybe I'll be getting one sooner than later if this announcement really does kill the HD-DVD industry. =D I wonder when the first BD-DVD drive will come out for xbox 360????

I heard that remaining Toshiba stock of HD players will probably be flogged on Shopping Channel and Walmart for next to nothing.

Well the players would still be good for up-converting regular DVDs for HD TVs. Though they would probably have to sell them for less than $100 for it to be worth it.

I'll bet they will be a lot less.
