Who do you like...besides the Pats!
I'm putting my weekly picks here, so they are public. I hate people who say after the games "oh yeah, I picked them to win too!"
Washington over Seattle
Jax over Pitt
Tampa over Giants (this could go either way)
San Diego over Tennessee
So I'm picking two home teams and two visitors....one being Washington traveling all the way to the West coast. History says that you never pick an East coast team that has to travel so far...but we'll see.

I agree with you on three of the games, but I dont see Jax beating Pitt. Pitt seems to step up in the playoffs and play a bit better then normal. I would pick the Giants over TB also, but like you said, could go either way.

Well...1 for 1 today. I knew better than to pick Washington after they had to travel, but what can I say?? Jax pulled it out though.

QFT!
I'm going with Green Bay/Jax for the NFC championship, and the obvious Indy/New england for the AFC. And for the Super Bowl, I'm guessing New England/Green Bay. Being that I'm a Green Bay fan, I'll say that the Pack will win the Super Bowl, but I know the odds are stacked heavily in New England's favor. I really would love to see NE muck up a perfect season and get blown out in the Super bowl though. =D

My favorite stats of the weekend: In the 2nd quarter of the Jags/Steelers game the Jags had 20 yards rushing to the Steelers 27 yards. At the end of the 3rd quarter the stat went to Jags 87 yards, Steelers 27 yards. It seemed like Davenport was doing better than that!

If only I weren't a gambling addict, I'd put my trillions of credits on the Packers this week. I've been a fan of the Pack for a long time now, and can't wait to see if Favre makes the Super Bowl this year! I think the Patriots are a given for the AFC, but I'd love to see the Jags take it. As for the other games, NYG has a good chance against the Cowboys, and the Colts will give it to the Chargers... 42-10!

Its amazing that he was drafted so low and has done everything that he has. Hes only 30, and just 2 wins away from winning his 4th Superbowl.
Plus IMO, this is the first year he actually has an above average recieving corp. Before this year the best reciever hes had was Deion Branch who is good but probably a true #2 reciever.

A look at three of the QB's from Saturday's games:
Brady 26/28 262yards 3TD's and a 141.4 rating
Farve 18/23 173 yards 3TD's and a 137.6 rating
Garrard 22/33 278 yards 2TD's 1INT and a 100.3 rating (he was actually at 150 rating until the 4th qtr!)
That's some impressive play by QB's! Saturday was definitely a good day for football!

I wasn't impressed with several of the Giant's players sportsmanship.
I actually thought Ross deserved the injury he got, since the refs couldn't bother to catch him.
Karma bit him in the butt. :D
I also think the offsides call on Ware wasn't correct. He was watching the clock and the ball & he had his timing near perfect.
He was just a faster mover than everyone else......not offsides.
But- what's done is done.

I think there were non calls on both sides of the ball, nothing that I can point to now, after the fact. And I believe that generally speaking the home team gets the benefit of the doubt more often than not.
Dallas didnt get the job done, to me it's that simple. Sure I was rooting for the Giants because I didnt want to see GB go to Texas Stadium for another game there.

At one point Dallas had 8 penatalties...Giants 1. So yeah, I slightly disagree with the line of thought that says, generally speaking the home team gets the benefit of the doubt.
And I'm sorry, but if some of the antics performed by Giants players after the play was done is not considered dirty, then the Raiders are an angelic team as well. The dude who chucked the ball at the play clock after scoring? I hope the NFL fines him for that one, cause that was surly unsportmans like conduct.
There are more examples, but it is after the fact and a done deal anyways. It was a great season overall. Just wish Romo would have left the blond bimbo alone. :w00t:

poor cowboys. I honestly think it was partly Jessica simpsons fault. I think when he hooked up with her thay started fcking and that threw his concentration off. Before her he really had to just learn plays and drills. Then with her he had to think of her more often.

I dont know, Superbowl is nice and all, but how often do you get a chance to say your shagged Jessica Simpson on a beach in Mexico?
As far as the game goes though, I have never been a believer in penalties changing a game. One or two, even 5-6 plays arent going to determine the outcome of a game. Yes, ONE bad call will negate a TD with no time left on the clock, but what happened the other 100+ plays? If a team is that good, they wont have to worry about scoring that last second FG or TD....
I agree bad calls make a difference, but they dont change the games. Good teams are good teams, bad teams get lucky...either with calls or plays.

That is more along the lines of what I was actually whining about. Not that the penalty calls on the Cowboys were BS, but the lack of penalty calls on the Giants was BS.

NY has a far better chance of beating GB then SD has of beating NE. NE is just mistake-free perfection this year. Everything is clicking and I dont know there is anyone that will beat them. Even the Dolphins COULD beat them, I seriously doubt anyone will.
NY just needs to do two things, pressure Favre (good luck with that) and run the ball down GBs throat (they definately can do that). You cant overlook the fact that NY is doing amesome on the road this year, and Eli is actually playing mistake free when it counts. IF and I emphasize IF Eli plays mistake free again, they have a very good chance of winning.
Also NY plays in cold weather outdoors as well as GB, SD plays in tropical weather, they will not be ready for the weather.

Do the Chargers have a chance against the Pats?
Disclaimer: I am not a Football expert, just a Patriot fan who thinks the Chargers can beat them if they play a solid game.
1. Go after Brady and try to force him to make some mistakes. The Patriots do have a good offensive line so its not going to be easy but as we all saw last week getting no pass rush isnt the answer. They do have Merriman who is one of the most feared pass rushers in the league.
2. Get Antonio Cromartie on Moss, hes a playmaker and has shown he can make big plays. If Brady wants to risk throwing the ball downfield then have your playmaker on Moss. If the double up on Moss all day then there are going to be guys open all day. I think they do have to go with a mix of man coverage and double teaming Moss. When they do go man they the HAVE to put Cromartie on Moss. Also, when they do go man coverage they should be blitzing to help Cromartie.
3. Put a CB who can really Jam well at the line to cover Welker. They cant let him get a free release and run whatever route he wants. They should be physical with him all day since hes a small reciever who is used to running his routes uncontested.
4. Pound the ball on Offense!!! They have LT (Depending how healthy he is) and Turner who should both be able to run the ball if they commit to it. Turner inside and LT outside. NE has old LBs that the Chargers need to try to exploit.
5. Use screen passes to keep the NE defense honest. Darren Sproles has playmaking speed and they need to get the ball into his hands. Make those Patriot LBs run around the field.
6. Special Team play is important!! Get good field position and cover your punts/kickoffs.
IMO, they wont win this game but they need to take some chances and make the Patriots get out of the comfort zone of sitting back and letting Brady and the recievers have a field day. Then on offense they need to run the ball ALOT and try to find ways to ear down the Patriots LBs.

As much as I hate Favre (at the moment at least), I don't think he should retire yet. This was one of his 3 poor performances this season (which is good by any standard. the other 2 bad games were against the bears btw.). Favre had a really bad day but still managed to keep it close, and he didn't have much help at all from the GB defense. I can't believe people are already saying he's washed up (again), just hours after GB loses the NFC championship game (you know, the game right before the super bowl?), in overtime no less! He's got a fresh young team that has breathed life back into him. I think he should (and will) stick around at least one more year.
Edit: I hope tynes dies in his sleep. On second thought... I guess you cant miss all of them.
Edit 2: Im with you on that one. It's time to get Rodgers in. Nice carreer favre and got some new records. It also seemed like he was tired at the end there.
Please tell me you aren't serious! Aaron Rodgers would be useless as a starting QB, he's been on the bench for what, 4 years now? If Favre does retire, the Pack will be looking for a starter, not a backup for A-Rod.

Chargers main problem today...they scored field goals instead of TD's!
Chargers scored 4 times, but all FG's...Pats score three times but all TD's...Chargers could've won that game easily if they executed a little beter in the red zone.
Rivers played nice, but I still believe if Volek played it would have opened things up more by having a more mobile QB. But...anyone can look back and be an armchair QB...Rivers played with a lot of heart. Hats off to NE and Brady...that defense won this game for them!
Can Eli win the big game? NY played them tough in the season finale...but gotta wonder if they can do it? He only has one real go to receiver (Burress)...he's got to be able to get Boss involved and get the RB's catching passes out of the backfield! (edit) Eli did show today that he still has problems managing the clock...that can't happen in the Superbowl!
edit: I will say this (mainly to Samy). Coughlin looks mighty smart for playing his starters in that finale now. He knows they can play NE tough and can win the game...more importantly the players know that they can win it. I admit when I am wrong Samy!

Well nobody at the begining of this year expected anything at all from the Green Bay Packers. If I remember correctly some of the "so called" experts predicted them to probably finish in the basement ofthe division. One never knows...who would have expected the Bears to play the way they did either, they were the odds on favorites to win the division at the begining.
Another thing, Green Bay has one of the youngest teams in the entire NFL, they have a few holes to fill like any other team. The defense will get better with the experience and the linbacking core along with the defensive line are very strong. The secondary has some gaps to fill but like them or not Harris and Woodson are pretty damn good. GB plays tough D and that should be the same next year.
The offense got lucky this year with Ron Gant at running back. However the front office has a pretty good knack for finding players that didnt make it elsewhere and utilizing them in the GB way of doing things. How many people remember Ahmand Green now? Sure there is always the question about Farve, but this year outside of a few bad games played extrememly well. He had one of his best seasons statistically and for the most part played the system that the headcoach installed.
I bet he was tired, along with the players on both sides of the ball, sure he responsible for the int. Yet looking the the season overall and not just this game Green Bay is fortunate to have Farve in their backfield.
Aaron Rodgers was drafted to be his successor and someday I think he will be. Hell just because he has been in the league for 4 years doesnt mean he cant do it, think about who he is playing behind. GB got lucky to get Rodgers where they did in the draft. I think that eventually he will get his chance. GB however lives and dies with Farve, and in someways that is part of his appeal. Noone from what I have ever heard or read about Bret ever questions his desire or his love for the game. He typifies Green Bay Packer football and it's history. The great years along with the crappy one's. Naysayers will look to this game and use it as an excuse to say he is finished, I disagree, it's just one game from many, sure it wasthe NFC Championship, but he did leadthem through the season very well, and even received one vote for MVP. That says a lot about "what's" left in the guy.
Yet GB should never have been in the situation in the first place. They may have a better team than the Giants, just as I thought that the Cowboys were the better team as well, even though I bet against them. Yet kudos to the Giants for playing a better game. They won it and I wish them well against the Patriots.
I am not betting against the Patriots, but I would love to see the Giants take it all.

I guess i dont know much about football because I keep hearing people mention Eli didnt control the clock well. He got them into fieldgoal position with plenty of time on the clock, waited until a few secs to go and spiked the ball....what should he have done? They werent looking to get in the endzone, with those conditions, everyplay was a potential turnover, why risk it once your in fieldgoal range? How many overtime games does a team march all the way to the endzone? Most of the time they get into easy FG range then kick it.
I dont believe the Patriots are going to lose, but I give the Giants more credit then most. Burress is not Eli's only weapon. He didnt even have a TD yesterday. Yes, he had a hell of a game with 11 catches, but if a guy is open, why not throw to him? He schooled Al Harris because he is a top WR, and Eli utilized that. The other games Toomer was a huge factor, Burress had i think six catches total in the first two playoff games. He is finally learning to use ALL his weapons, and that is why the Giants are playing such good, mistake-free football.

Let's break it down. Eli wasted 3 timeouts. One in the first half, by not getting the team to the line in time and two in the 2nd half for the same reason. One of them on the final drive. You have a kicker that missed one FG already and you are trying to win the game. You want to get as close as possible. They started with 48 seconds left...somewhere around the 45 or 50 yard line. Yes he moved them down, but he could have been much closer if he had paid attention and managed the clock better.
Oh...and Eli didn't put them in position to win the game, Webster did that with the INT and the run back!
atb35
01-22-2008, 10:36 PM
Well the QB always gets the blame for delay of game saving timeouts...so I wont even try to argue that. Along with that blame, they are deserving of the credit for giving their teams a chance to win. Although Webster did get the INT, did it really matter? The entire 2nd half and the first couple downs of OT GB didnt move the ball, NY drove the field each time....chances are, they would have done it again...
ja_Patriot
01-22-2008, 10:59 PM
A breakaway TD was recalled because of a holding flag. A field goal was botched by a high snap. In the end, the Giants had more scoring chances. The QB had no INTS and took care of the ball. GB had 2 and couldn't convert 3rd downs. Breaks of the game. The game in Glendale will show the proven QB vs. the surprisingly maturing one. Place your bets! Should be a good game.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jailed quarterback Michael Vick can keep all but $3.75 million of the nearly $20 million in bonus money he received from the Atlanta Falcons following a ruling Monday by a federal judge.
Inside The Vick Ruling
• Barring a successful appeal, Michael Vick can keep all but $3.75 million of the nearly $20 million in bonus money he received from the Atlanta Falcons.
• Under the NFL players' contract, as interpreted by U.S. District Judge David Doty, teams can't recover roster bonus money, because a player earns it when they make the roster. However, they can recover signing bonus money because that's governed by separate rules.
• The case was argued in Minneapolis because Doty has handled cases involving the NFL's collective bargaining agreement for nearly 20 years.
The Falcons sought to recover the bonuses after Vick pleaded guilty to federal charges in a dogfighting operation. The bonuses were paid from 2004-07.
A special master ruled in October the Falcons were entitled to recover the bonuses. The Falcons argued Vick used proceeds from a contract he signed in 2004 to finance his illicit activities.
The NFL Players Association had asked a federal judge to overturn the special master's decision that Vick should forfeit the bonus money because of his guilty plea.
But U.S. District Judge David Doty of Minneapolis ruled that recovery of most of the bonus money by the Falcons would violate the NFL collective bargaining agreement. The agreement does not allow roster bonus money to be forfeited once it's been earned, the judge wrote.
Doty, who has handled cases involving the collective bargaining agreement for nearly 20 years, compared interpreting the relevant section of the contract to "alchemy" late last year.
The NFL criticized Doty's ruling. The league has suspended Vick indefinitely without pay.
"It makes no sense that an individual who willfully violates his contract is entitled to be paid tens of millions of dollars even though he is in jail and providing no services whatsoever to his employer," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in a statement.
Vick's personal attorney, Lawrence Woodward Jr., said Vick was happy with the ruling but understands there could be appeals.
"He's grateful for some good news, but he realizes he needs to keep doing all the right things to get back to playing football," Woodward said.
At a November hearing, union attorney Jeffrey Kessler contended Vick's "roster bonus" should be treated the same as a "performance bonus," which can't be forfeited under the agreement. The league maintained the roster bonus should be treated like a "signing bonus allocation," which could be forfeited.
Doty ruled that once Vick made the Falcons' 80-man roster, he earned the bonus money and the team cannot demand forfeiture. However, he wrote, the Falcons can recover $3.75 million of his 2006 signing bonus, which is governed by other rules and is something the union did not challenge.
Kessler welcomed the decision.
"The Players Association is obviously delighted with the result," Kessler said. "It vindicates our view that a clear deal was made, that once players earn their compensation, that it is no longer subject to being taken back."
While the distinction about whether Vick's roster bonuses were guaranteed or not guaranteed may be important for salary cap purposes, Doty wrote, "it does not dictate the outcome in a forfeiture context."
Any money recovered would be credited to Atlanta's future salary cap.
Doty also ruled that the Falcons may not use state law, even in a grievance procedure, to try to recoup Vick's bonus money.
Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay issued a statement saying the team is disappointed with the ruling, but that it won't affect the Falcons' salary cap for the 2008 season.
"Any potential recovery would have only affected our 2009 salary cap," McKay said. "As to our future legal strategies, we will meet with our legal representatives to more fully understand our options before making that determination."
Vick received a 23-month jail sentence. He entered a minimum-security prison in Leavenworth, Kan., last month.
