A liberty port call to Okinawa's southernmost islands by two US Navy warships went off without incident Sunday, and even drew positive comments from Yonaguni residents.The one-day rest and recuperation visit by the USS Patriot and USS Guardian, the first ever visits by American Navy ships, had been opposed by the Yonaguni Town mayor, Moriyoshi Hokama, but was pressed by the American Consulate Naha on grounds of “crew members need rest time and want to do a friendship exchange.

Both of these mine counter measures ships are home ported in Sasebo. There was ample time for the Mayor of Yoniguni to place a phone call to the Mayor of Sasebo and get his opinion in advance of the port visit. But, that would be rational and completely out of step with the rantings of the anti-US military crowd.

With respect to the original author/translator, anyone who has visited Yonaguni will hear the false ring of the statement concerning the Mayor's "opposition" to the visit.
