The violence in this film was really disturbing. Quenten Tarantino had his hand in this production, and the weird dialogue of some scenes show that. Man, this film was good, but like I said, very disturbing.
Basically it is a story of 3 college backpackers from America roaming across Europe looking for fun, and that means in the form of ladies. Things go wrong, however, when they get to Slovakia.
From Wiki (warning, if you go to wiki to read more about it, a lot of the movie will be spoiled):
Critical results (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostel_%28film%29#Reception) were either raves or pans. Critics attack the film for its violence, while defenders interpret it as a subversive commentary on the darkest aspects of a capitalist society, and how people exploit others for their own pleasure: Jean Francois Rauger, a major film critic for Le Monde, a French newspaper, and programmer of the Cinémathèque Française, listed Hostel as the Best American Film of 2006, ... Hostel won the 2006 Empire Award for Best Horror Film. In October 2007 H.M.V. stores' annual Horror poll ranked "Hostel" on their list of the 10 best horror films of all time.
But the people of Slovakia were offended by it:
The film received strong pre-release complaints from the country of Slovakia, which is depicted in the film, and also from the Czech Republic. Slovak officials were disgusted by the film's portrayal of their native country as an undeveloped, poor and uncultured country suffering from high criminality, war and prostitution, fearing that it would "damage the good reputation of Slovakia" and would make foreigners feel that it was a dangerous place to be. The tourist board of Slovakia invited Roth on an all-expense paid trip to their country so he could see it's not made up of run down factories and kids who kill for bubble gum. Tomas Galbavy, a Slovak Member of Parliament, recently commented: "I am offended by this film. I think that all Slovaks should feel offended."
Whoa! I geuss the film shouldn't have been made since some were offended by it. We are seeing a lot of this kind of wish for censorship these days.

I didn't care too much for it. Watching people get tortured is really my thing. Now water boarding on the other hand isn't too hard to stomach but, people getting dismembered... yeah, not for me.
Don't think I'll be backpacking through eastern Europe anytime soon either.:D

It was a rough movie to watch, wasn't it, DougP? Disturbing.
I think it is one of the only movies I have EVER actually closed my eyes on for a particular scene.

Yeah I had to watch it in sections... Couldn't watch it all the way through. I guess its not a part of the imagination that I care to explore or entertain. I guess I don't have it in me to enjoy such things. Oh well.

Doug, without spoiling it with details for those who may want to watch it, didn't you think the dialogue (well, it was almost a monologue) of the two when they were in the changing room was like sureal, with the guy talking about how he was getting off on the idea of going "old school" when it is his time to get busy?
I mean, that was some freaky dialogue!

Yeah, but at least I think putting it down on paper in creative form is much better than acting out any voices they are hearing.

bigger.. better.. Thats what you need in todays world to have a great movie. If people dont talk about it around the watercooler the next day, it just wont make it.

You want to talk about a messed up movie that will really have to talking.. go see "I am Legend" but dont look up anything about it if you can. just look at the movie poster. Definatly one of the years best films..

Saw it last week. The end really sucked. Because of that it did nothing for me.
It became quite predictable after the halfway mark. Up until then it was very good. Too bad.

I thought it was going to be good until the zombies came out. WTF?!?

strange.. I had no idea what was going on. guess I just dont pick up on things like that. The ending was kinda weak, but not much else they could have really done. Like I said, I had no idea what the movie was about, just that it had will smith in it and looked interesting from the poster.
Hostle though, I saw it only a few months ago and only because they were watching it at work. plus the bobbies helped peak my intrest. other than that.. just another hack'm up horror flick. but I knew thats what it was and pretty much what the movie was about.

yeah that ending was pretty weak, but the rest of it was alright. I don't want to give any spoilers to it but I thought there would be a little better character development. Not with Will's character of course, he did an awesome job I thought.

yea.. that threw me off too. But the more I've thought about it since then, the better I think it was. I'm still up in the air on if I want to see it again or not though.

I am like half and half, it made me really think what I would do if I was the last person on earth. I know it would have been boring to make the whole movie that way so I believe that's why they went that direction.
It just seemed like a copout or a little cliche.
The scenes where amazing though, I know it is special effects and all but to see New York without people. WHOA:scared:

I was reading the reviews for "I am Legend" yesterday and people gave it some really bad ones! I'll still see it though...but I'll wait and pay Y100 for that one just in case.

some of us only rent off base...occasionally a movie will slip by without much notice because it doesn't get much publicity off base.

Ok my fault, I just thought we all have computer access since we're on this forum. :D :o
I wasn't trying to be an ass or anything. IMDB.COM keeps me up to date.
Revenge Of THe Nerds, now that's a great movie; did they make a sequel?

Touche! :D
I knew it was available...I was just giving a reason why some others would not. There are quite a few times when I miss certain movies because they just don't get as much push in Japan. There is also the possibility that the title was changed or something like that. I go in and ask for a movie by title, and the title is completely different!:cursing:

LOL...I don't get over that way much...it may have reopened since the last time I went there (years ago)...is there still a rental shop down the street from Plaza? Used to be a large shop right on the roadside.

Oh...but to protect JU, do not post any links directly to the site. We here at JU Forums do not promote the use of FTP sites!

Hostel was a crazy movie. But watching movies like that doesn't bother me. I've seen some of the japanese horror flicks and it makes my teeth cringe. Like that movie audtion..that chick was crazy!!! But as far as hostel 2, I liked it. Some of my guy friends find it to be disturbing when she cut his wee wee off in the end.
