What do you think about the right to have children? Is it an automatic right, or can extenuating circumstances have a higher right to push that aside? Should the state ever be allowed to impose on the right to have children?
It is estimated that China's One Child Policy has prevented the addition to the population of approx three hundred million people. That is quite a substantial amount to imagine added (if not for prevention) -- as if the whole population of the U.S. were added to it.
As draconian as China's policy is, I support it because they are in a drastic situation. Hopefully, countries will adopt policies to lessen their (and the world's) population problems before they are faced with having to contemplate such drastic measures. But, when lifeboat scenarios are encountered, those in the lifeboat must give up some things so that everyone has a chance to survive.
A problem is, some don't recognize when they have entered the lifeboat.
