Until recently it had been years since I have eaten corn flakes. I remember as a child we would eat those Kelloggs Tony the Tiger Frosted Flakes with all that sugar. I guess I just got away from it, and looking at how small the cereal boxes are in Japanese stores I would think, what a scam to sell such a small amount for so much, and plus I have no desire to eat sugar flakes.
But, about 2 weeks ago I noticed that Jimmy store in Oyama, Ginowan, began selling this huge American size of corn flakes. And to boot -- they were not frosted in sugar. So I bought one and wow! They are greeeeaaat!
Put them in tonyu and put on some toppings:
BAM! Raisins.
BAM!! Pumpkin seeds!!
BAM!!! Blueberries!!!
And eat. Usually they are my afternoon and midnight snaks.
Try 'em.
Do you guys still eat corn flakes?

I thought that was a puzzle!! wow..:D
*if you would of read that blonde joke in an earlier post you would know what I was talking about.*
I only eat oatmeal or omelets for breakfast. Cereal just doesn't hit the spot for me anymore. But I used to love frosted flakes and frosted mini-wheats.

Where do you get pumpkin seeds around here? I love baking pumpkin seeds and lightly salting them.:)

@dk: yeah, well cereal doesn't hit the spot for one of the three major meals, but as an in-between snack it is great.
@Doug: At Jimmy stores (the one in Oyama Ginowan near Futenma base on 58 has them). They come in square plastic containers. I think about ¥500. Pretty good amount size if you ask me.

I've seen them prepared in packets at San-A. You can also use the seeds from kabocha. I can't tell any difference.

Yeah, Steve, I've seen them in SanA, too. But I felt that Jimmy had the better bargain for amount and price. Take a look if you ever get a chance to stop in Jimmy in the future. Their nut, seed, and dried fruit section is pretty good.

Are there any other granola eaters around? (aka "damn hippies") The Japanese versions are over sweetened and over priced, but now and then I find 500g or 750g bags from Australia. Anyone have a reliable source? Jimmy's?.

I'll have to go pumpkin seed hunting later. Thanx for the info, I've got a jones for some pumkin seeds.

Mine is popcorn, doritos, or o-zack potato chips. :D
Pretzels are great too, but hard to get.

I am not sure about granola at Jimmy, but you are right about the Japanese granola being way to sweet. I gave up on them years ago.

lol.
But all those make me even more hungry after eating them.

Yeah, they're not very satisfying, but they're better than nothing. Plus, there's always the option to eat another bag of popcorn.

I don't miss the old sugary ones. The ones I buy from Jimmy have zero sugar on them. That allows me to give the exact amount (which is very little) of sprinkled sugar I want on them for me.
Raisins, banana slices, and blueberries is what I flavor mine with. Pumpkin seeds give it even a bigger crunch.

Yeah, you are in good company. Look HERE (http://www.thebreakfastclubclan.org/graphics/cartoons/cartoons_calvin_and_hobbes_chocolate_frosted_sugar _bombs_01_sweet!(1000x333x256).gif).
Maybe his morning breakfast is what makes him schizophrenic throughout the rest of the day.

I like it with raisins, bananas or strawberries. I can never eat it as a breakfast food. I would as a snack if we had it available or I have to have something else with it if it is an actual meal. If I eat it alone, I am hungry within 30 minutes. I have always been like that. If I eat one that is sugary then I get really jittery and hungry.

I am eating corn flakes right now.
It's been years since I've had them with strawberries. On my thing to do list, and my wife's shopping list.

Question though:
Is it just me or does the milk off base taste nasty?

I don't know, Tony. I don't eat my flakes with milk.

You might be onto something Tony. I can't read the cartons very well, so I don't know what the difference is between the different milks they sell here, but I think the cheaper liters contain some proportion of powdered milk.
Maybe some of the local experts will remove themselves from each others throats long enough to pop down to the super for some research.

I'm not a big Corn Flakes fan, but for some reason if I'm gonna go bike riding or a run.....I can tell my body "likes it", compared to another sugary cereal or a traditional huge breakfast (eggs, bacon, toast, ******s etc). Actually, Cheerios is one of my favorites (non-sweetened) with banana slices. Now, that's rocket fuel! I think Cheerios lasts longer in my system than Corn Flakes......but I'll still eat C.F., just never tried it with all the stuff you mentioned.......maybe I'll have to.
As far as the milk tasting different over there.....I thought that was common knowledge, at least "back in the day". I remember when I was over there in the early 80s and everyone was talking about "buruu shiiru" milk. Know what that is? Blue Seal milk from Knudson, IIRC, supposed to have been the hot ticket for good milk, off-base. But I think it tasted weird too.

Tastes just fine to me -but then I've never tried american milk!
I don't like the low-fat milk though, tastes yucky.
I love cornflakes in the morning too, I usually buy genmai, but I'll
look out for the one's in Jimmy's. A 'Big' box sounds good, those
japanese one's are finished in days!
