View Full Version : Shiritori しりとり

Here's a fun Japanese game we can play and its a good one to freshen up on your vocabulary too. The game is called shiritori. Its a word game where one person says one word and the next person has to use the last syllable or character to start a new word.

For example:

しりとり(shiritori) take last character (ri) and make new word りんご(ringo)

Most important rule to this game is a word cannot end with the "N" ん sound.
Another one is to try to keep the words nouns and not use adjectives, verbs and adverbs.

I'll start this one out with.

でんわ(denwa) Ok, who's next?:D

Eer I'll give you that one but it should have started with ya.. last character was a small "ya" but since its hard to tell when reading it in romaji can't falt you for it.:)

Benri. (convenient, a "na" adj)

Muku

Benri.

Ri-su as in squirel

FYI go=shay the last syllable in Japanese would be used in shiritori, so the in the word rui that I wrote you would have used the "i" instead of the "ru" when creating the next word.

Dont worry about it though, it's the game and picking up new vocabulary that is important, thanks for playing along here.
OK, this one was difficult -Rubi ?

Note to everyone else here playing as well.....

I would suggest separating the syallables of the words so newer people to the Japanese language can differentiate between them and easily find the last syllable.....for example in my word today I wrote ri-su when usually it would be written risu

Ban-

Bango. (Number)

Since ban ends in the forbidden ん, the starting point should either be the "ko" in the last acceptable word, or a new game with a new starting word. I don't think you can start with one of the endings that resulted in a loss.

but that ends in 'te' again.

Is that allowed?

Yes it is, so long as the first syllable is used. It is not necessary to stop at one word either particularly if you are using a word that ends in "N". For example if I said ramen that would be out, but I could say ramen-ya.

For te.....I could also have just answered te.....as in hand.

I believe that's just potato, not sweet. Just saying......maybe I'm wrong.....

Imo 芋 technically speaking is potato, yet commonly in Japanese and moreso here in Okinawa when one is referring to "white" potatoes they would be called jagaimo otherwise imo commonly refers directly to the satsumaimo or sweet potato.

Nope, it's Japanese and the spelling, well the kana is いぶくろ and the kanji is 胃袋 the word い or "i" kanji being 胃 also refers to the stomach as well.

FYI...opai is spelled with two p's as in おっぱい, oppai.
