View Full Version : What is your favorite resturant in Okinawa?

It would be difficult for me to come up with only one name, because the I have issues with the word "favorite". I tend to become quite tired of places if I eat there too often.
One place that I rarely tire of is the izakaya Misato in Okinawa City (I'll post directions later but it is off of Hwy 85).
They have a varied menu, and the manager actually changes the offerings quite often. I have gone in there expecting to order one thing only to find out that they no longer offered it. But I was pleasantly surprised when the new offerings were better than what I came in for. Price wise it is ok, I can feed my family of five for about $100. (Yes, we treat izakaya's just like a regular resturant, we just make sure we go early enough to beat the drunkards...meaning we eat and leave before 9pm).
What are some of your favorite places?

My absolute favorite restaurant would have to Karubi daio in okinawa city. just mentioning it makes me want to eat it tonight.
I also enjoy all of the Sam's restaurants.
Call me mainstream or whatever, but I love the Sam's chain. hehehe. I LOVE their escargo and king crab legs.

ha,ha, have to agree with you on that, liked the food, but you sometimes skidded your
way out.
Guess my favourite would have to be Pizza House at Urasoe, as far as good food goes,
there are just so many restaurants here it is hard to choose one.

I like Fab in Chatan on the sea wall. It is a kurry house, but I don't really like it for the food. I like it for the atmosphere looking out into the East China Sea. Even better to go there when a Typhoon is nearby but not raining yet. Then you can still sit outside and watch the surf and get a cool breeze.
Just came back from there, actually. There was a nice cool breeze going and the sunset and cloud formations were magnificent.

Ok, this place just has to be the best place for value on the Island, if you have no money
and lots of kids and want to eat out - but don't let me ever tell you I actually recommended
the food (he,he), it is 500yen for all you can eat, curry rice, okinawa soba, make ur own
toast sandwiches, winner sausage on sticks, drinks and desserts.
Don't remember what it is called (24 hour cafe), next to this Jewellery shop, right before
you get to Plaza House, (just drive into the Jewellry shop car park and you will find it).

For western-style food, I'd have to say my favorite is Bikkuri Donkey. It also seems that I can never get tired of Coco Curry. I love the ramen, gyoza, and chahan at Yachabo in Kadena. It's most definitely in my top 10 restaraunts on island.

Amazing Thai food at Som Chai.
It is just off of BC Street (Park Avenue). If you enter BC from 330, it is down the first walking street on the left side. Parking is just up the street to the right.
Amazing food, great friendly service, and I am still surprised at how clean they keep the place!

That place is good but WAY too espensive and it's not even all you can eat. If you like yaki niku (like me!) then I have a good place for you. It's called karubi daiyo and it's in okinawa city. If you want directions let me know and I will PM them to you! It costs about 2000 yen and it's all you can eat for 2 hours.

Greetings JapanUpdate Bloggers! First time poster here. I spent only 3 short months at Kadena AFB, but it was the best time of my life. Live surf guitar rock (Ventures style) at Livehouse Zig-Zag, weekly Sunday trips to Naha's Kokusai Dori & great food are what I'll miss the most. I was all about the soba joints at American Village until I discovered Som Chai near Kadena. Som Chai located just of B.C. street had the freshest, tastiest, spiciest Thai I've ever eaten. I took a picture of Richard & his wife the last day I was on Okinawa. I think its a great photo of the two & would like to share it with them (somehow.) Could anybody help me with this? I'll send it to them if I get a mailing address. If any Bloggers live nearby & would like to see thier face when you show up with a pic of them want to help me out, just give me a shout. I will post & reply to many topics on this site to ease the seperation anxiety.

That is Hokkaido ramen and is verrrrrrry good! He has three resturants that I know of, one in Naha, and a new one in Okinawa City.
I also know of a Kyushu raman joint down by Kinser. I need to post directions to it. Not as good as Hokkaido ramen IMO, but a different taste to enjoy.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Okinawa_restaurants/message/198
Tonneau Bistro & Bar, in the Teruya district of Okinawa city, is one
of the largest izakayas on the island. "Tonneau," a French term for a
large cask or keg, gives the place a European feel. But the name may
be the only thing French about this izakaya.
Although four stories tall, Tonneau has two floors of booths and bar
space inside the keg. The outer décor is carried on inside — you
really do feel like you're sitting inside a giant wooden keg.
Drink prices: Mugs of beer from 299 yen to 620 yen. Awamori ranges
from 590 yen for a half bottle to 2,300 yen for a bottle of their
finest. Sake costs 745 yen to 2,750 yen; cocktails are 380 yen and
bottles of wine start at 2,900 yen.
Cover: None.
Food: Okinawan and Japanese dishes with some weird-looking pizza
thrown in for show. Reasonably priced. They charge you for the
appetizer they bring you when you first sit down.
Entertainment: The good friends you bring.
Clientele: Mostly Okinawan. There were two other tables of Americans
when we went there. English menus are available.
Dress: Casual.
Location: From the intersection of Highway 330 and 329, turn south on
to Highway 329 and left at the first light. Then turn left at the
third stoplight. You can't miss Tonneau — it's a giant wooden barrel.
On kadena go out gate 3, go right, go all the way straight to HWY 85
go left. Go all the way straight until you see "Yellow Box" on left
side, turn at the light before passing yellow box. Go all the way
straight, pass the A&W, keep going until you see a big barrel on the
right side.
Hours: Open 5 p.m to 3 a.m., 7 days a week.
I was told they have lunch buffet during the day. We ate their around
10pm one night, it was worth it. I ordered chocolate brownie for
dessert I think it was 430, but it was a slice of chocolate cake,
they brought 2 out for me and my daughter since we were the only ones
left at the table. When you go into the door, to left take your shoes
off and place in box. After being seated they bring you water and
appetizers (they charge you for it), but when ready to order you have
to call them by using the phone at the table. Any service you need
just pick up the phone!! They do bring out the kids an appetizer too,
it was apples and strawberries with whip cream and chocolate syrup
over it all. I plan on going back, but this time without kids!!

Ever been to Big Daichan? AKA: Popeyes? http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Okinawa_restaurants/message/191
The most well known and frequently ordered dish has to be the "Big
Ramen" set. For just 650 yen you get an enormous bowl of ramen, rice,
salad, pickled radish, a small bowl of seaweed and other vegetables
in a vinegar dressing; and your choice of either chicken, gyoza, or
spring rolls. It is enough to satisfy any big appetite, and in most
cases it will easily feed two people.
With approximately 29 different versions of ramen on their menu,
there is definitely a selection that will satisfy everyone's tastes.
All ramens can be ordered as a single dish, and prices range from 500
to 700 yen . There is also a kid's size ramen for 380 yen available.
Some of your choices include vegetable ramen for 650 yen, garlic
ramen for 650 yen, and beef ramen for 700 yen.
Besides the "Big Ramen" combination set, you also have a choice of
either a "miso", "shoyu", or "shio" ramen set. All are priced at 600
yen and include rice, salad, seaweed in vinegar, and pickled radish.
You can also order ramen and fried rice for 750 yen, ramen and
chicken cutlet for 800 yen, and if you're adventurous, ramen and pigs
feet for 750 yen. All the same combinations are also available with
soba.
If noodles is not what you're looking for, you can choose from the
many different Chinese dishes available. Seafood chowmein is 780 yen,
sweet and sour fish is 780 yen, Chili shrimp is 700 yen and ginger
pork is priced at 650 yen. There are also many other choices, and all
include rice, soup, salad, and marinated seaweed.
The sets are "big size/super size" - and worth it! Prices are just
right. The restaurant has been there for 10yrs and the owner has to
restaurants or he did. He has been a chef for 20+years. The menu is
in English and in back of menu has pictures. They have highchairs.
You can also order take out, its Izakaya style they are open 11am -
5am/7days a week.
Directions: leaving Kadena Gate 3, turn right, go straight until you
see Hwy 85 turn left. Go past the fire dept on the left side, pass
the Chinuman izakaya next to Tupperware store on right side, go
straight until you see the old Plachinko building on right side at
stop light, there is a barber shop on left side past the light. On
the right side past the light is a grocery store. Turn right at the
light, don't go past it. Go straight there will be a Kanehide on the
right side. Keep going straight on the left side is a park on the
right side is the restaurant. I think its the 2nd driveway after
kanehide. You will see the sign Big and the rest I can't read! When
you pull in the driveway it shares another restaurant on the right
side. Big DaiChan is the restaurant on the left. They only accept
yen. I am going to try and get a menu to post here. He is the same
owner who owened Popeye's outside gate 2.

I have been there 3 times so far, at night its spendy usually spend 9000 yen for a family of 5 (2 adults/3 kids). The food was good, the service was just a phone call away, but the service was fast. They don't speak English there (on the times we have gone), but have English menu! I do try to try a new meal each time I go somewhere. It wasn't the greatest, but the food was good. Maybe if i try more foods I will like it more.

My husband like to go to this place called Helios (sp). It is by Camp Kinser. We like to go there on a nice afternoon and sit out on their balcony. It overlooks the ocean and a shipping port. We like this place because it has a large menu of international beers; german beers being our favorite. We just sit out and relax and talk. It is nice and peaceful. For food they serve pasta and pizzas. The people there are very friendly. For the most part they don't speak much English. We did have this one VERY helpful waiter that basically told us what the entire menu said.

If your still not sure what to eat, they have most of their food displayed up front. Finding it isnt really that hard, just follow the directions going down 85, the old Pachinko place where you make a right at is called "Omega." Keep going down and youll see a small park on the left side, as soon as you see it look to your right for a sign over the building that has the BIG-something sign. If you get to the corner of the park and the light, you missed it.

No, cuz many people don't like to try new foods, or go to Japanese restaurants. And I don't constantly say go here its the best. Well, seeing as how you withstood the withering sarcasm so well..... the other day I happened to post that I had bought some tuna at the fish store, meaning the local sakana-ya in my neighborhood, and someone else asked "where is the Fish Store?".
I grant you that The Fish Store would be a catchy name for a retail establishment that sells fish, in the States anyway, or maybe she thought I was referring to some place like some people call Makeman "the monkey store", but anyway, that's the whole story!

Yeppers any restaurant with less american's is the best!! I won't eat any restaurant that has more than 5 Y plates!!
Brilliant! Americans can't possibly appreciate the complex cuisine here in Okinawa, but if we rely on your guidance, and frequent an establishment, perhaps we'll drive you out of it! What fantastic logic that is!

Went to the giant barrel place...but it was covered in scaffolding...the inside was still awesome, and the food was killer!
The octopus with wasabe was snotty, but quite tasty. Tuna roles were yummy, and the crab pizza was da bomb! Don't get me started on the atmosphere! :w00t:

We were just at an interesting place in or near Yonabaru called Komiya. Food was not special but good, but it is in a huge 130-year old timber frame house that I assume was moved from the mainland, and full of funky Japanese antiques.

Ate there, and it was GREAT! I figured that the novelty of the building would be about it, but the food was really good. The quality was top-shelf, and the presentation was impressive.
I'm certainly going back when the scaffolding comes off.
Thanks for the tip!

Could you mean KOMINKA? In Haebaru near Southern Hills Ice Rink? It is an old home (minka=home, ko=old...kominka) brought from Niigata and reassembled here. The food remined me of any old cafeteria, but the surrounding sure are nice.

Yep, that's the one. I guess I didn't remember the name right.
I wonder how Japanese ever got used to tiny apartments after those huge old minka farmhouses. My wife's mom lives alone now in one like that, not quite as large but the same style.

Actually, you may be correct okisteve. A quick web search brought up both readings of the kanji. In standard Japanese it is usually Kominka, but it could be read Komiya as well. Some websites have it listed your way.

Now, is that a restaurant or izakaya? Everybody was telling me Arin Crin was a restaurant, but it was a izakaya once I got there. Oh, and Arin Crin's food sucked.

That place that gunny8511 is referring to is called Tonneau. I would consider that place to be an izakaya and yes that place is awesome. If anyone is really into Soba and garlic, there is a place right next to Met's billards on the 329 thats called Kokoro House. This particular 329 is the one that junctions with the 330.
