Lately, I haven't been able to get out much, but I always enjoy beef, so mine would probably be Four Seasons. It's kind of pricey though, but worth it in my opinion.

If you like curry but don't like CoCo's try out FAB(sp) ふぁぶ in Sunabe near the seawall. :thumbup1:
Also a lot of the greater places to eat may be out of the way a bit. Sometimes its better to get away from the major bases and your comfort zone and explore a bit.

if you like hawaiian food, you should try Mau Mau(SP?) its next to Big Echo on the back road from 58, by JUSCO and American Village
(yeah I forget the name but that sounded the closest lol)
Now then besides all these great ideas put here, dont forget about the "major" hotels along the coast in Ona village.
Starting with the old Ramada all the way up to Busena, then cross the island to Kanucha. They all have great restaurants in them, they may be a bit pricey but there is some outstanding food available. Plus the drive and scenery at many of them is unbelievable as well.
Also if you are up for it, come down to Naha, any of the major hotels, plus a plethora, (my word for today:p) of small cafes and restaurants that serve all sorts of great food a reasonable prices as well.
I know of a small french restaurant in Naha that serves a full course dinner for @¥2,000. Great food.

I agree with dk, four seasons would have to be my favorite steak place. But they took ribeye off the menu, which pisses me off!
But my favorite place on island would have to be karubi daiho! Just thinking about that place makes my mouth water! Where else can you eat all the delicious karubi you want for 2100 yen! If you want directions, I'll gladly give them to you!

Here is how to get there from kadena. Go out gate 2 and keep going straight. Keep on going straight until you reach the bottom of the hill. Turn right at the bottom of the hill, I believe the road is 329. Continue down this road until you come to an intersection with a Mcdonalds, that will be on your left hand side. At this intersection, turn left. Continue down this road until you see karubi daiho. It will be on the right hand side of the street. The sign is a big light up chili pepper and clove of garlic with some japanese characters written on it, vertically. You'll probably have to turn around to get to it because there is a medium in the center of the street. If you pass the toys R' us, then you've gone to far, turn around.
If you do plan on going there be warned. There isn't a english menu, and not everything on the menu is all you can eat. Some of the big family plates are not all you can eat. Oh and you also have to ask for the all you can eat, it's call tabehodai, but I'm sure I spelled it wrong.
Hope my directions help!

Cathleen I really cant answer this question because I dont know, and that is one reason that I didnt reply in the first place....not to ignore you but just because I couldnt give you an answer yes or no.:o

I get asked this question a lot since I'm always bitching about where the guys at work always go to eat. Plus on another local forum that im on this topic came up and I was bashing almost every place that people put up.
My quick saying for finding a good place to eat on island is "walk in.. if you see an american there, leave." I have learned that after 9 years on island that americans probably have the worst taste in food in the whole world.
Now a lot of places that people recomend, like dragons, onakaukau, yoshi hachi ect.. may not bad, but there is much better on island.
The other problem that a few of my friends run into is the language barrier. A lot of very good resturants dont have english menues. And I always tell my friends, "just let me know when you want to go out and I'll be more than happy to take you". And im sure you can find someone that your work with or know that has a japanese wife/girlfriend that you can go out with and have dinner with.
Here is a link to some resturants and izakayas that either me or friends of mine eat at and have liked.
good places on Okinawa - google maps (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&oe=UTF-8&t=h&om=1&msa=0&msid=105107005773325569974.00000112003c3fdf28f83&hl=en&ll=26.289721,127.790909&spn=0.281955,0.462799&z=11)
I have not been to all these places, but I have been to most of them and stand by this list. If anyone has any places that they would like me to add to the list, just let me know. Again, places that are frequented by Americans will not show up on here.. so dont even recomend them.

Thanks for the map! I've been to that Tonkatsu Taro before. There is another place down the street from it near mike's tex mex. It's called Katsu no zen, and it's in a yellow building. The katsu is awesome and it's really cheap as well. I think the chicken katsu at Tonkatsu Taro is about 1,100 yen for the whole set. While the chicken katsu at Katsu No Zen is about 650 yen for the whole set! You also get free refills on the ice tea, or for 210 yen you can get a coke with free refills.
If you want me to mark it on your map let me know:D

The FOUR SEASONS at the Renaissance Resort (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/okarn-renaissance-okinawa-resort/) on Hwy 58. It is a bit expensive, but has excellent food and is what I consider fine dining at its best for these parts. They have an excellent lamb entree, which is the least expensive course.

SPICY MOS CHEESEBURGER I think it's great anyway.
IMO, Sky Lark is one of the worst places - microwave TV dinners - uugh!
Mos Burger takes some acquirement so don't judge it after a first trip. I personally enjoyed it the first time and love it now. Allot of American's I know don't like it and I truly believe it's cause it's fresh and doesn't make them feel like shit afterwards, like they're used to w/ McDs, BK, etc.

I tried my house and did not like that place but my hubby does. I usually give a place 2 or 3 times, before i hate it.. i always say it could be a bad day for them new hires working or something. There is another burger place i went to it was at a Jusco's the burger place started with a Y i think. It was the jusco's as you are coming back for the aquarium. anyone know the name of this place?
Not sure of a burger joint that starts w/ a Y.
My House is a great grease pit - better some days than others. Almost everything there is excellent at times.
Ootoya is pretty good. It's a Japanese restaurant and very fresh.
There's one located in the Barclays Court plaza next to the embassy. And there's one on the second floor of the building where Toys R Us is in Shinto Shin.

07-03-2008, 02:12 PM
Directions to karubi daiho:
Go out of kadena AB gate 2 and keep going straight, past four corners. Continue going straight until you reach route 329 and turn right. Stay on route 329 until you see the intersection with the McDonalds on the left hand side at the corner of the intersection, should be about 3 or 4 blocks. I don't remember the street number for that street but turn left at the McDonalds intersection. Karubi daiho is on this street on your right and side. It's easy to spot, the sign is a big red chili pepper and a small garlic clove. Normally, I turn at the lawson intersection and come into the parking lot from the side street.
Be warned that they don't speak english nor do they have an english menu. All you can eat is 2,100 a person for two hours but not everything on the menu is all you can eat. Beer is 200 yen a mug between the hours of 5pm and 7pm IIRC. Best time to go is on a weekday around 5 or 6pm. On weekends, and later in the evening, it gets kinda packed.
