View Full Version : A question about music played in December?

I was just wondering why AFN Radio does not pay much Xmas music, even though it is already December?
I occasionally hear some very, very old Xmas song being played, but nothing to even remotely make us feel like Xmas is coming?
I wonder if they have some kind of policy about what music they are allowed to play.

I wanna hear them play 'Do they know it's Xmas? ALL DAY!!

Probably because of the same j@cka$$eS who get offended if we have a Christmas Party instead of a Holiday Party. I can't wait until July 1, 2008 when I am no longer under the blanket of the Gov't and I can tell people to get a life and go %$#@ themselves!

Maybe because X-mas is still a month away? Two days of holiday music is about all I can stand per year. I'm much happier with the AFN Rock, Country, Hip Hop, Rock, Country, Hip Hop ad naseum...

No, it is not because it is a month away. They did the same thing last year - didn't play any Xmas music!!

I'm not asking for it to be played all day, maybe just one every few hours would be fine.

Just think there must be some reason. They were playing all my favourites on FM Okinawa at lunchtime.
I mean what's up with them??

I think they probably play a couple Christmas songs an hour of live air, one modern (usually country) and one classic. The only non-Christmas song I've ever heard them play is Adam Sandler's Hanukkah (Chanukah) song, which I really like. Typically, they play more Christmas songs closer to the holiday.

There are probably a few basic reasons for them not playing Christmas songs more. Here are my thoughts on it:

1. It's depressing. This is the most common time of year for lonely, depressed GIs to kill themselves. They miss home, family and/or friends, and being on a little island thousands of miles from (for example) the snow covered hills of pine and chimney smoke is tough on even the most gung-ho GI. (Take that imagery Currier & Ives! heh.)

2. It's annoying. Many people are sick of hearing Christmas music on Christmas day after the first hour of it non-stop. I love Bing, but White Christmas a few times a year is more than enough. Even parents can handle only so much Christmas when hearing multiple variations of Rudolph or Jingle Bells... Y'all know just the one I'm talking about. heh.

3. It's religious-ish. (o.O) There are tons of Christmas songs in multiple languages. There are only a few Hanukkah songs. Not that Dradle, Dradle, Dradle isn't a great song... Although I'm sure they exist, I've yet to hear a Kwanzaa or Winter Solstice song (chant, yes, song, no) on the radio. People get grumpy when they don't get to hear songs that don't exist about their holiday.

Thistle...AFN used to start the xmas music on Thanksgiving weekend. They would begin with maybe 1-2 songs/hour. As they would get closer to xmas the rate of songs would increase. By The week of xmas it would be every 3rd or 4th song was a xmas song and on xmas day it was nothing but xmas music...it was enough to drive you nuts...being that there were only two stations to choose from.

I would be willing to bet they scaled back for two reasons: 1. People are being bludgeoned by xmas starting in September, when AAFES starts selling decorations...and by December many people are already tired of it.
2. The AM station is still down, and there is no real alternative for people to be able to switch to.

Well, you'll be glad to know that this morning at 6:45, they played a Christmas song. It's not my fault I heard it. My stereo broke in my truck. All I know is I was offended by the words "snow," "Christmas" and "ho."

Why would you want to hear christmas songs 24 hours a day on the radio anyways? Sure I like to go shopping or to a christmas party and hear christmas songs, but not while I'm in my car! I could listen to it a little bit, and maybe if kids were in my car. But I would be pissed if my radio station (definatly not saying my favorite radio station is AFN) turned off their regular music to play christmas music.

Unless it's Adam Sandler's Hanukkah song, then it's ok.

Love Sandler's Hanukkah song! It mentions Spock AND Kirk. heh.

In my car is about the only place I'd listen to Christmas music, because I can sing along as loudly and as badly as I want without bothering anyone. I have CDs for that though. AFN does Christmas songs all day on Christmas eve and day, which is more than enough for this happy camper.

You all misenterpreted my first post - I just said I wanted to hear a few Xmas songs played.

I mentioned the Band Aid song 'Do they know it's Xmas?' because I love that song and wouldn't mind hearing it played all day!

But 24 hours a day - No thank you!!

And I agree with what Socalheart had to say before, it can be a depressing time of year for some. I, too find it depressing and find it is the only time of year I still get homesick but I just need to accept the fact that it is coming for my kids's sake.

What do you do for satellite radio here in Okinawa? I've heard about something like MBC but does Sirius/XM work here? Are sets available locally?

I don't mind Holiday music when we are NEAR the actual holiday. Can we get past Turkey day before we start to rock out to Crimmus musik?
