Congratulations It’s a girl!Jubilant officials at Okinawa’s Churaumi Aquarium are heralding the first ever birth of a manta ray in captivity. It’s a monumental feat, never achieved anywhere in the world before, and comes nearly 19 years after the aquarium began trying to breed the Mantra birostris.

TOKYO - A giant manta ray baby that was believed to be the first born in captivity died Thursday after being abused by its father, Japanese keepers said.
The female baby manta was born Saturday at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, more than a year after its parents mated.
The baby manta, which was more than 6 feet wide, was pronounced dead Thursday morning after living only 4 1/2 days, the aquarium said in a statement.
That's a real bummer. :(

Not so much. Animals are not meant to be kept in captivity.

I disagree. I like zoos and I love the expo aquarium.

Which zoos, and why?
I'm not going to go into a discussion on this. I've always liked zoos and I always will. You'll never change my mind on that.
But off the top of my head... I like the Churaumi aquarium A LOT.
And I seem to remember thinking a few of the ones I visited as a kid in the states were pretty sweet too. And I think I might even have been to a zoo in Sydney, but I can't remember for certain.
And that's as far as I'm willing go in this thread. Feel free to write up a topic entry on why animals have no place in captivity if you'd like.
