View Full Version : Do you own a Kariyushi Wear shirt?

I do. I have about 10.
I really like them. They can be casual or formal, but always comfortable. And they are not as loud as Hawaiian shirts.
In the last few years they have been making some with preacher collars, which I really like (but haven't gotten one yet). I also like the solid black ones. A lot of those are used for funeral attendance here, but they can also be used for regular wear as well.
I wish Kariyushi shirts were a little less expensive, though.
I don't get much more formal than a polo shirt. Nope, no kariyushi for me. They just don't do it for me. Seems like everybody wears them. I'm pretty much t-shirts and jeans/khaki's year round.

Yeah, they have really become popular within the last 5 to 10 years. I didn't like them at first, either. But after I wore a few on several occasions, I really started liking them.
Though, I also usually wear jeans, shorts, and t-shirts.

What is a Kariyushi shirt? I was in Okinawa from Feb 95 to Feb 96...never heard of such a thing. I was stationed at Hansen.

They are similar in style to Hawaiian shirts, but not quite as "loud".
I would bet you could do a search and come up with pictures.
Rather pricey little buggers too.

Basically it is a hawaiian shirt that is overpriced! They are nice, but there is no way I'm paying some of those prices!
TheNoNamedOne
06-23-2007, 10:48 PM
No, no, no, Dr.P. They are not nearly as loud as Hawian shirts.
Kariyushi wear is just great, and they are a prerequisite for all those who consider going native.
Some do get pricey, however. The cheapest ones usually start at ¥1,900 and can go all the way up to ¥12,000. I recommend going to AAA for a wide selection in prices and styles.
If you are going to buy one for cool casual wear during the summer, try and get one with a lighter color so as to reflect the sun. If you are going for fashion then go for some of the darker backgrounds with some lighter print designs.

The cheapest ones I have seen...at least of the ones I would buy, was around Y5,000. And finding my size is a PITA! Of course I will probably break down one day in the future and buy a couple. Hell, it's not like I don't waste money on other things right?
TheNoNamedOne
06-23-2007, 11:16 PM
Yea, the cheap ones are usually such that I throw them in the washing machine here at home. Right at about ¥5,000 shirts, I usually decide to send them to dry cleaning to keep them nice. Those are the better looking ones.
But when I want to stay as cool as possible but still know I am going to sweat a lot from outside activity, ¥1,900 shirts fit the bill. If you look hard enough you can find some nice patterns at that price. But the material is simple cotton. The ¥5,000 ones start blending silk and other nice material into the fabric. The feel is noticably different.

My husband is enormous...he's 6'3" and well over 200 lbs (and all muscle)...I suppose if he decided to buy some he'd have to search long and hard to find one in his size. But can you still go out to a tailor shop and get clothing made for you at a reasonable price?

Hi Jenna,
Welcome to the forums.
Jenna, the AAA stores usually have LL and 3L sizes. I think I saw some selections of Kariyushi shirts in those sizes as well. Good luck, and I hope your move goes smoothly.

It was a pain in the butt, but found a couple of pictures of them by searching Google. Not quite as loud as Hawaiian shirts but not too far behind. At least not the one's I looked at. I'd sport one though :)

Definitely.
Bottom line, folks...it's hot here. My collection of aloha and kariyushi shirts grows by the month. Couldn't picture functioning in the business world here in the Summer without them.
Peace,

SanA has a wide selection to choose from and many are very nice -- but still a little expensive. But they do have a line of cheap ones.

Btw, SanA stores are having a 15% sale on Kariyushi Wear shirts now. They have some good choices.
Usually in September they will have their big inventory reduction sales on Kariyushi Wear -- usually marked down at 30%, and sometimes 50%. Still hot in September, so if you can wait until then for some cool comfort wear, do so.
If not, then eat the present 15% sale.

If I am correct, a true Kariyushi shirt to be worn to work by Okinawans must be made in Okinawa?
If I am correct, a true Kariyushi shirt to be worn to work by Okinawans must be made in Okinawa
To be worn at work? I dont think so, and some are made in mainland as well.
Some do get pricey, however. The cheapest ones usually start at ¥1,900 and can go all the way up to ¥12,000. I recommend going to AAA for a wide selection in prices and styles.
First off way way off line on the top end here. Top end Kariyushi shirts can go as high as 100,000 yen.
Just about any shirt that you see at San Ei can be ordered as well for people that can not find sizes that fit them. For example if you need a 5L here you could pay between 2 or 3,000 yen more and get it made for you. And of the factory produced shirts can be ordered in that manner.
At Jusco you can get shirts made to order, and you choose the fabric, check out the men's section.
I also like the solid black ones. A lot of those are used for funeral attendance here, but they can also be used for regular wear as well
Only if the person is ignorant of local traditions. It would be better to wait until one is out of Japan before wearing black funeral wear for casual attire.
Kariyushi wear is also ok for men or women to wear to work in place of suits and ties "officially" from May until the end of October.
The black funeral shirts are ok year long in place of the white shirt and black necktie.
There is a huge difference in material, if anyone is going to purchase one I highly reccomment paying a bit more and getting the 100% cotton shirts, the polyester blends DO NOT breath as well and can be dowright HOT. The cotton shirts need to be ironed, but taking them to a dry cleaner you can get them cleaned and pressed for around 100 yen, less than $1.00.
You get what you pay for.
Dont forget either that the length of the shirt is important as well it should on a man go down as far as the bottom of the pocket when wearing a pair of slacks. If it is too short it will look "wrong" as well. Some people can wear the 2, 3, or 4L sizes but the length is wrong and need at least a 5L. San Ei has some 5L's but stock and selection are limited.
Just remember what I wrote in the previous post about ordering a shirt, I need either a 5L or 6L because of length. I fit 3 or 4L fine body wise but they are too short. I stand @6'4" tall just to give people here and idea of what I am talking about.
I can not count how many Kariyushi shirts and Aloha shirts I have:rolleyes::D

I wasn't sure. I thought thew wife mentioned that alot of the Okinawan business like/require the Kariyushi be locally produced...
That is very possible as companies are trying to use the Kariyushi to promote Okinawa and the generate more business.
But it's not like people actually check whether or not they are produced locally. If you look some of the shirts at SanEi are not locally produced.
If anyone wants a quality Kariyushi shirt and not the 3 or 4, 000 yen ones that San Ei has, go to Mistukoshi on Kokusai Street or Ryubo at Pallete Kumoji at the end of Kokusai Street across from the Prefectural Office building.
They have high quality Kariyushi wear, it's costs more but it's worth it.
My "best" shirt cost me @40,000 yen and I have seen many that are light years better.

A little off-topic, but since SW keeps mentioning his Kariyushi shirts are his dress shirts; there is a type of shirt in the Philippines that has a preacher style collar and is made of silk or a mix of silk that has perforrated holes in a kind of floral pattern that lets air in and that is also meant to not be worn tucked in. I guess that is their tropical fashion. I had one once and would like to get another, but cannot recall what the name of that style was. Anyone know?

No trail they have them out yearly, true Kariyushi wear can get extremely expensive, some as high as $1000.00 per shirt.
However decent one's are available for closer to $100.00 or so. However please be careful to get 100% cotton or a 80% to 95% cotton blend with bamboo. If you get the "man made" stuff they will be hotter than hell and not breath at all.
I know I have made that mistake in the past purchasing a cheaper shirt that while looking nice made me sweat like crazy.

Look for the the 5XL or 6XL at either SanEi or JUSCO, they sometimes have them in stock. Also any of the shirts that San Ei has displayed can be order made as well for roughly 2,000 to 5,000 yen over the listed price.

Very funny......
Seriously though some of the 4X will fit however with Kariyushi wear it is also important to remember about the length of the shirt, particularly for men.
The shirt should at least be long enough to cover the back pockets on a pair of slacks, to be worn properly, if it is too short it will look really strange.

I wore some Kariyushi Wear today:)
Day 10,927 of my omnivore diet: I still do not own a Kariyushi Wear shirt. I believe it is the lack of meat in vegetarian diets that is causing the OP to completely lose touch with reality and consider these shirts somehow "cool", "hip", or even "snazzy". Although these shirts may be comfortable, they have an uncanny ability to add what seems to be about thirty years of age onto the wearer. For instance, a fifteen year old boy (cough, p_chan), may appear to be having a midlife crisis and on the verge of buying a pretty little red convertable if he puts on his kariyushi wear shirt.

I guess that pointing out the obvious might be a bit useless however DK I think you havent "seen" the Kariyushi wear that actually is pretty cool and in no way makes the wearer look older....

That looks like something an old man would wear. Thanks for proving my point.
The top one is ok, but still, it has buttons. "Cool" doesn't require buttons.

If you look through the 'net you will be surprised I think. There are plenty of site selling all types of Kariyushi wear....but I guess each individuals idea of "old" is different:rolleyes:

Here in the States, wearing shirts like those will get you beat up in the mall parking lot. :D

Not in Hawaii I'd bet:D
Anyone dig those collarless Kariyushi shirts, or low collared. Similar to the earlier mentioned Barong from the PI? I've seen some nice looking ones and am considering that style for my first.

Gotta say I love the Barong. I wish I would have bought more when I was in the Philippines. But I have a business trip there in October, so I will get a few more. I love the Kaiyushi shirts though. Even though when you get them as gifts you really have to let them know how much they cost, or they will just think they are some kind of Hawaiin tourist shirt you bought for 15 dollars at the swap meet. (Then they don't take care of them.)
I've never been into the Hawaiian shirt style, mostly, as said earlier, cause you get beat up in the states for wearing something like that.
I have been considering getting a Kariyushi shirt though for here in the summer time. I picked one up for my Dad yesterday. It was really nice and simple - all white. I actually like it so much I think I'll go back and get the same one for me.
I guess for me to get a Kariyushi shirt it would really have to catch my eye. Maybe I'll have a few by the time I'm old fart
Mine says 100% ポリエスタ (polyester). Is it gonna breath? It was like $100 damn near but still has the tags on it...

I am going to pick several up for my husband. Going to Jusco tomorrow, some of the examples actually look nice. (Yes, I am surprised)
I tried on my 100% Polyester one and it doesn't feel very comfortable or cool and it was ¥8,500! It looks nice though so I think I might keep it.

Yeah, most of them are pretty gay looking on young guys or made for old guys...
Mine is all solid white and looks pretty cool IMO

That's pretty funny. He probably is gay himself.
Try telling some Filipinos that they look gay in their barongs...:scared:

There is a store in that big outlet mall in Naha that has big sizes. I mean like Sumo size. Them Kariyushi shirts look like bed sheets. I forget the name of the mall...but it is advertised in the Okinawa Living sometimes.
