This is a great Thai restaurant in the Chinen area. It a bit of a drive to get there if you live in central Okinawa, but well worth the time.

Cafe Curcuma in Chinen is a great place to visit. Spectacular view. But I don't think its necessarily a "Thai" restaurant.
Try "Jai Thai" in Mihama, same building as the ferris wheel. It's run by Thais and the main restaurant in Tokyo is vetted by the Thai embassy and government.
Here's a link (http://www.okinawakuukan.com/index/shop/food/chatan/jaithai/).
It's in Japanese but if you have Firefox Translator shouldn't be a problem.

I've only ever eaten at Jai Thai in Mihama and the little place across from the camp Courtney gate. Jai Thai was good, but a bit pricey. I liked the fried tofu, and I despise tofu. Heh. There's one on HWY58 down toward Naha with the weird dead tree branches decor outside, but I've never eaten there nor do I know anyone who has. If you eat there, let me know how it is. :D

We had Jai Thai (our first time eating Thai) and I love exotic foods...but Jai Thai was friggin AWFUL. And a rip-off. And the service sucked...I was dying of thirst the whole time because the waiter was incompetant.

I love Thai food too. I haven't been much around...the only Thai place I ate at was the one by the ferris wheel. I will have to check out these other places that were posted up on the forums.
As for Thai ingredients...I've found some here at like San-A's. There will be like a little section of it, but there's not alot. My Inlaws send me my ingredients back from the states. If I find anymore elsewhere I will let you know.

Your wife is not here then? We get some of the ingredients from local stores. Some of the stuff though like tamarind paste we get from elsewhere in Asia. Although it grows well here, you can order lemon grass on line and it gets here quickly. You will have a hard time finding galangal here, but I have seen it in powder form. Again, you can get it on line.
I have only found one place which cooks authentic thai (besides my kitchen) and that person is between restaraunts now. Most of what I have eaten is way too bland, and has way too much coconut milk.

Indeed... my wife is not here on account of a ****** up system(she is back home now)...so i am here unaccompanied...trying to get it changed to accompanied...
I keep hearing about specialty vegetable shops in the VC street area.... also I hear that Som Chai is about the best im going to get... but its unfortunatly noodles only... ive tried jai thai and its absolutely awefull... I asked for fried rice and tom yum goong.... the fried rice was dry (very un-thai) and had no flavor (again un-thai) the tom yum goong tasted like gumbo (im from new orleans) with only a hint of lime.... forget it HAHAHAHA!!
Im upset that most everyone is saying they have there own stuff shipped here... cant be easy on me can it!!!

There's a good place across from Yogi Park in Naha, has lunch specials, very friendly, very tasty, and they sell some ingredients too. I was desperate for cilantro once and they just gave me a big handful for free. It has a Thai flag on the sign outside so not hard to find, next to the Foremost cafe.

There is a food stall in the night market at Chatan that makes Thai food. I haven't been in a few months, but it is cheap and good. There is a place called Baazar on Kokusai Street. From Starbucks you go about 100 yards toward Palette Kumojii - it's on the basement level of a building just after some karaoke place. There's another place on R330 in Naha just across from Yogi Park. Kurukuma near the Tamagusku castle ruins is really good, with a great herb garden and fantastic ocean view. A lot of the dishes are Thai, but many are from other SE Asian countries. Large portions and not too expensive.

Do you mean "Foremost" as in Big Dip in the Makiminato area? If so, can you be a bit more specific on its location? As an aside, if you mean Foremost Blue Seal (Big Dip), I think that's awesome! I haven't heard anyone but me who remembers those days.

No. I used to eat at a Nepalese place a lot when I lived on mainland Japan. I am fairly confident I could tell the difference. There is a night market near Araha Beach that (used to, apparently) have a food stall selling Thai food (cook was Thai). I haven't been in months, and Uminchu wrote earlier she has closed and is moving locations.

Socal, I am pleased to tell you that Foremost Blue Seal is alive and well in Okinawa! They are everywhere, it seems. It feels like a time-warp back to 1955, but it is a lasting American contribution to the Okinawan diet, like Spam :argh14:. My kids drag me in for a cone now and then. Is Blue Seal Foremost still a brand in the states?

My friend Neng goes to Thailand and brings lots of food/ingredients back here. She use to have ads in the classifieds that she will cook Thai food for you or for special occasions, sorry I can't remember how much she charges tho. Just PM me and I can give you her email address/phone #.
I get all my ingredients from the states. I cook Thai food all the time.

Re: Foremost Blue Seal
McKesson sold them to Nestle who in turn sold the Japan company to Pokka (I think) and dropped the Foremost part of the name. What was once a burgers and fries with ice cream place was turned into a pasta and ice cream place. They stopped making milk as well. Their main plant was torn down and remodeled to exclude the production plant. The office section was remodeled and leased (?) to another restaurant. The classic American style was redesigned to Japanese-American style. McKesson stopped the Foremost production a long time ago, sometime in the early eighties.
I remember when they started the ice cream cake for Christmas. I also remember when they brought in the first waffle cone maker for ice cream. They made fresh waffle cones. They used to have a Santa visit the restaurant section on the weekends during the holidays, of course to mostly promote the holiday ice cream cakes. They wouldn't even have the Big Dip signs if it weren't for the American influence. The Japanese fought against it, but now it's one of the most recognized signs on island.
(My apologies for staying off Thai track. I have a special affinity for Foremost Blue Seal.) So back on topic, kinda... Big Dip doesn't have Thai food, but their weird pasta choices might come close. heh.

Im looking forward to trying these places and mingling using the thai language.. which I am awefull at btw... to many slight tonal differences
for instance... my name..... gary... if said slightly different this is the same word for a dirty prostitute... my wifes friends called me by that alot and i was not the wiser untill they gave me a thai nickname... anyway

Went to Curcuma this afternoon, a most perfectly beautiful day. Unlimited visibility - the horizon line seen from the restaurant was actually curved.
I was not as thrilled by the food, but it was OK. Plenty big servings, but I'd have traded quantity for quality. I'll be back though - so beautiful.

You're prolly referring to Chibi's. She closed down but moved. These are the directions that my friend gave me, it's easier if you are military that have been on Camp Foster:
"it's right outside legion gate, "bar boon" (go out legion gate and take a right go down about 3 blocks and its on your left) "
I haven't been there yet because I've been in Korea when she closed down but Come this january, I'll sure tell everyone if it's really there or not if no one gets there first haha.

I know her well, and I've known the owners of Boon for many years. Chibi is not cooking there, or anywhere else now unfortunately. Boon has been working on getting a good live house venue started up, and has some great music.
Fare is sausages, wings, etc. depending on what they feel like cooking. We'll be there during New Year's selling food and beer to temple revelers across the street. :D

easy way to get there is to find the "hideaway" bar past gate 2 street and take the left and park you should see the place as you walk into the little shopping area (the covered area...no idea what its called)

I'm still looking for good Thai food in Naha. I'm afraid to say that Thai Thai (mentioned earlier in this thread), is in fact not Thai food. It's just a trendy, over priced Asian style isakaya. Nice place to bring a date, but not a place you want to go when you are craving authentic Thai food.
Anyone know of a real Thai menu in Naha that they can point out on google maps?
Thanks!
Not sure maybe someone else knows exactly but I heard there's a good place on or close to Kokusai St.
I went to one spot years ago. It was either Thai or Vietnamese, can't recall, but it was awesome and it was around the corner from the Kencho government office building at the end of Kokusai St. like on a back street behind it somewhere. It was a little hole in the wall type place.

Yeah, I agree okisteve. The owner's real nice. She loves to chat, and if you call a day in advance, she can make off-menu requests. She only opens for lunch, but if you get a group of 10 or more, she'll open in the evening for a private party. But, her sudden "closed until..." notices have grown rather old.

ok there's on kokusai street that is owned by an okinawan man. You won't find it unless you try to find it or know the pictures on the menu that is placed outside of the shop. You go to the OPA building and cross the street. Walk away from Star Bucks towards like McDonalds. it's like only a few buildings but you'll see a weird menu of thai food and if you look closely, they have som tom and a picture of tom yum kung. keep looking for a menu that has thai food placed outside. It's on the basement floor. these are crappy instructions but that's the best i can do seeing that i havent been to naha lately.
Prik Thai is just around the corner of kokusai but that is a little bit hard to explain this hole in the wall.

We had Jai Thai (our first time eating Thai) and I love exotic foods...but Jai Thai was friggin AWFUL. And a rip-off. And the service sucked...I was dying of thirst the whole time because the waiter was incompetant.
When I first got on the island folks were telling how great this place was and since my wife was Thai that I needed to go there... what a disappointment. Expensive. Medicore dishes. Less than adequate service. Expensive. Oh, by the way, did I say it cost too damn much?

Yeah but that's after knowing what real Thai food tastes like. Hell I could go to one of those little street restaurants in Thailand and get awesome food (and a case of dysentery too)for like 50 baht. There is no comparison to the real thing.

The street food is great...never had a problem with it except when it is too spicy. I guess I gained a strong stomach eating street food in Egypt and Turkey.
My wife just about had a fit when she found out how much the grub was at Jai Thai.... especially since she can make it better for pennies.
We haven't had any really good Thai food here. In fact, when I was stationed in mainland it was nothing to wrte home about... except for a few of the restaurants in Yokohama's Little Bangkok.

Damn. Just fly to Thailand for Lunch or Dinner. It's not that far away, or that expensive to go there. Just tell your boss that you are going for Thai food for lunch. Then come back the next day and tell everyone it was an awesome lunch.
Or to simulate a Thai lunch, drink a cheap warm beer, lick a peanut, bite a hot pepper, and suck on a piece of boiled chicken. Chew a couple vegetables, watch some Bangkok porn, and there ya go. Thai food.
I know this is about Thai food but several years ago there was a really good vietnamese place past and behind the Kencho gov office bldg (located at the very far end of Kokusai St, on a side st back there somewhere but not too far from the main drag. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a good Thai joint in that area. You would be surprised at some of the places you might find on the little side streets off of and past Kokusai St. My absolute fav and what has to be the best zaru sobe on island is down there. Happy hunting.

Thailand is not as fun now that I married a Thai woman. Gotta deal with the in-laws... small villages way outside of Bangkok... mosquitoes... The food, however, can be absolutely fabulous, even from the most rickety vendor.
The next time I go to Thailand I probably won't let anyone know Ive arrived until I've been there at least a week so I can actually enjoy myself.

My Thai friends own a Thai restaurant, outside Camp Courtney..I haven't been there for 1yr so I don't know if its still there. But they are always serving Thai food in the festivals on bases.
Siam Thai Restaurant in Tamagusku is the best. Cucurma is very popular with Japanese tourists, but their food is not Thai authentic. I have been to the Siam many times.

Are you sure the owner's wife is thai? I think i went to it one day and there was a women with a child that seemed to be helping around the small restaurant and she only spoke japanese.
Quite sure. I know her and her Okinawan husband. She has Japanese employees and has her sister as a helper also.

Yes, they're still open. We found it. The restaurant is named Som Chai. It's just on the edge of the mall down the path from Sideways on B.C. street. You can either turn south at Sideways (bar/club) toward Gate 2 street from B.C. street or turn north at Ocean View on Gate 2 street toward B.C. street. It's a straight shot either way.
The food there was very spicy hot. We all had runny noses while eating. They put a lot of bean sprouts and green onions in the food. You can also substitute proteins in your dishes if you have allergies, like I do. :o It's good food (soup, entree) for an okay price. They have limited seating though and no appetizers.

This place was pretty good. It was a much better deal than the rip off Jai Thai. I also rate it above Curcuma and some other joints I been to but whose names have escaped me.

Okay, I'll tell you the best place for Thai on Okinawa. It's called Yadi Thai and the woman who works there is Thai; her nickname is "Chibi." By the way, if you want some Thai ingredients, or you happen to have a spouse who's Thai and wants them, then ask Chibi. You can Google it for directions or call her at 080-1788-6812. It's on a small, one-way, side street off of 330. There is a bar on the corner called "Boon Bar" and you'll see a Thai flag waving in the wind where Yadi Thai is. Boon Bar is directly opposite from the Futenma Shrine. If you've reached King Taco or the pedestrian overpass you've gone a sneeze too far. I've been to Thailand many times and always take leave there, for a month, and have been doing so every year since 1997. I'm married to a Thai as well and I know the real deal. Anyway, Chibi always make me stuff that's not on the menu - if I give her a heads up. Because she knows I know the real deal, that's what she makes for me. Actually the menu has evolved over time and includes some real Thai dishes that you wont find anywhere else on Okinawa. For a different taste, I recommend trying Larb Moo (Isaan) or Larb Gai (Isaan). Pad Prik King (either tofu or shrimp), Som Tum (papaya salad) with Kao Nieo (sticky rice), Kao Pad Goong, Pak Boon Fai Daeng, Steamed Tilapia, Pad Ped Pla Duk; oh and the fresh, hot, lemongrass drink Nam Takrai. I've read lots of praise here for Som Chai but it's fake Thai food as well. The cook is actually Filipino but he grew up in Bangkok. His wife is Japanese. The atmosphere is nice, as well as the people, but the food is weak. It's popular with the Kadena crowd and those who don't know any better. I think the rest of the ratings are pretty spot on. Especially Jai Thai, under the ferris wheel, for it's overpriced (fake) Thai food for those who've never had real Thai. I guess you're paying for the decor. If you're looking for lunch and are pressed for time, I'd say give her plenty of heads up as she's the lone cook and starts everything from scratch. So, it takes some time. Though I love Okinawa, the food scene is pretty sad. The worst Thai food I've ever had is here, the worst Korean food I've ever had is here, The worst Mexican I've ever had is here, etc. Even the Japanese cuisine is better on the mainland, and they have fresh fish everywhere. Okinawa, for some reason, has their fish on ice. Yes, this does actually make a difference. Well, good luck with your Thai experience.
