Does anyone know where there are good sushi places? I have been to several places, but I am tired of those places now, and yumanji (?) is no good.

The best sushi in my opinion does not come from sushi places. In fact, recently, my worst sushi experience was from a sushi place as the chef and owner attempted to use lemon juice and vinegar to pretend the fish was fresh. Later I verified-the gaijin can not taste the difference so easily.
Okay. Sorry. Rant. Any izakaya has to have decent sushi or they wont be in buisness long. I like the ambiance since the regulars from the bases wont be there with their noise, ill-behaved kids. Ooops. Rant again.

Yoshi hatchi gets a lot of press. I was not impressed at all. Maybe I was there on a bad day...when there was no fresh fish.
To get there, go N. on 58 past Foster. Way before KAB, there is a pet store at an intersection. I want to say it is hwy 23. Take a right and go to the top of the hill to probably the second or third intersection. Eagle Apts will be on your left, and that is the intersection with a crossover above it. Take a right at this intersection. Go about three or four blocks and look to the right. You will see the sign, and just past it is plenty of parking.

Try the Tomari Fish Market if you get a chance. Top-of-the-line sushi for a pretty reasonable price.

Wow! When I said Izakaya I was refering to an izakaya- which used to be called aka chochin but were somehow changed.
In other words happily married, an izakaya is an eatery/beer garden generally done in a somewhat course or bohemian style. I have never, ever, heard of one being large enough to house a bowling alley. :)

That's not a definition of izakaya I would have provided, but I haven't been here as long as Uminchu. More like a hole-in-the-wall bar with an inspired short-order chef. There are some big famous ones too of course. Anyway, the little dishes are always great.
Someone said that Yumanji is no good. We go to the one in Haebaru very often and rarely have had any complaint, except last time when the ikura was off. Assuming you really want the rotary sushi so you can make a visual selection, the one in Tomigisuku across from the new Makeman complex is also good.

Yeah I'd have to agree Yoshi Hachi isn't all that great. That place is right next to my inlaws house and I've only been there a couple of times. Wasn't impressed at all. Plus there always seems to be a butt load of Americans there and I tend not to follow that crowd when looking for good sushi.
Izakayas are definitely your best bet. Some of them are off the beaten path too so you got to get out there and explore.
Couple of places I've had good sushi at have been:
Ufugi: Yomitan, right outside of the main gate of Torii Station. (I know the Taisho personally and he's pretty damn good)
An to Ten(formally Kuganiya) In the Chatan area near Mike's Mexican restaurant on the road that runs parallel to RT58. Also they have 10 yen beers from 5pm to 6pm and 50 yen beers from 6 to 7pm.
There's another one in yomitan I just can't remember the name of it.. I'll get back to this with some more good places. :)

The restaurant's name is actually KITAKAISEN. It's located above a bowling alley in the Chatan sports center, which is "behind" Captital restaurant and Zion Christian Academy buildings, just turn at the light there. I like that place a lot, and my family loves the sushi and sashimi.
I can't offer any places other than the sushi-go-round up the street from Starbucks American Village. I'm allergic to fish. :o

Here's a link to coldnoodles' website. Search "sushi". I don't know how accurate the info is but lots of restaurants are listed. Some were copied from Oki Index write-ups.

Sushi? Here are a few tips.
If you go to a Kaiten "rotary" sushiya i.e. Yumangi or Miyabi, always order from the taisho, that's the chef behind the counter. They're usually happy to provide service and you get your sushi fresh, not running in circles for a while. Some of these places have dishes like deep fried battered fresh maguro which you won't find in a regular sushi place. The prices are preset, so you know how "hungry" you are.
Izakaya's get their ingredients from the same place in a specific area. So for Izakaya's, service and food being equal, some more than others, I'd always go for beverage deals. 2 fers or 10 yen beers, can't lose. Between 5 and 7 pm there should be lots of places anywhere.
To have eat sushi and save money, any Jusco, San-A or Kanehide megastore is a good bet. The ingredients have to be fresh for their customers. And you save a bundle. In some stores, they even do orders on demand while you shop.
Once in a while, if you want the really exclusively Japanese experience, visit a ryotei and order the sushi teishoku or set. In any 4- or 5- star hotel, that should be a pretty good experience. And a memorable and expensive meal.

It was a bit comical, but seriously, don't be afraid to just get in a taxi and go somewhere. Use common sense- for example why eat the old stuff rolling round and round getting sneezed on, when the chef is right there?
Small translation book will do you wonders, as will a couple basic courses in Japanese. Like the Nike commercial says, "just eat it."

Like attacking the semi with a can of raid thinking it was a cock roach.
Or the time the cute girls told us to go outside and wait for chicken (we were out of money) then locking the door.

No need to hash up the past there DoctorP. A simple she is no longer a member of the forums would have been sufficiant.
Anywho, there is a place outside of Foster that is called Genki's. It my favorite sushi place of all time. If you are coming from Kinser, you go towards Foster and right after the commisary gate (I believe) there will be an intersection and on the left hand side you will see a sign with 3 cartoon girls on it that seems to have to do something with a spa?. You turn there and at the end of the road take a right and it will on the right, just opposite the gas station.

There's nothing wrong with taking what's on the sign for face value at first.
But sometimes you gotta try just a little bit when it comes to Japanese. Otherwise it would be like being a foreigner in the US who doesn't speak much english and still thinks Hardee's is a place that fixes ED or Checkers sells board games.:D

It stems from a very popular Japanese nursery rhyme about traffic lights (and safety) that goes:
Aka (red)
Ao (blue)
Kiro (yellow)
etc..
Kids then take green as "blue" amazingly thru adulthood.

LOL. Patience, patience.... You should have gotten the message by now. It's a very subjective decision. Price for value and quality. Like saying, for the best Cuban food in Miami go to Cafe Versailles at Calle Ocho. Or for the best steaks in NYC, go to The Palm at 837. I could be right and could be wrong. You could be randomly seated next to the kitchen door and have the most awful experience at Bouley and still pay $1,000.
But here's one. Go to Yashibaru at the Kariyushi Urban Resort in Naha. Extremely good sushi for the discriminating traveler. Be prepared to pay top dollar.

Actually, it far predates any nursery rhyme. Until the Heian period (794-1185 CE) of Japanese history, the colors blue and green were not considered separate at all, and there was not a separate word for them - they were both written and spoken as ao, or blue. The word midori, or green, was considered to be a shade of blue from the Heian period. It was only after the Occupation after WWII that the two colors were taught as being separate, and published in textbooks as being separate.
OCanadaOurHomeAndNativeLand

Interestingly, the word ao is still used to describe some vegetables, apples and many kinds of foliage. Ao is also used in Japan for the "green" traffic signal in English. Oddly enough, other things, like a green car, a green shirt, etc. will usually be called midori.

My favorite place for sushi (don't know the name) but you make the turn on the street right next to King tacos on 330 facing the police box. You go doen the street and it's on the right next to Union supermarket.
You can't miss it
It's a rotating sushi bar and they make it right in front of you any way you want.
Cost is 105Y per sushi. It's real good and fresh

Izakayas usually have good sushi.
Yoshi hatchi.. wont ever go back there.
But like ja_Patriot said, its a matter of value vs quality. I know there arnt to many people on here that would drop $100 on two pieces of tuna slaped on some rice. But there are places like that out there and that tuna is worth the money. For 99% of the people out there, cheap but good is what they are looking for. I've eaten at the place that Tony Stacks just mentioned.. personally I thought it sucked, but at 100Yen a plate, it made up for the lower quality.
The only place I go when I'm wanting just sushi...
Take the expressway to exit 1-2(one right before the Naha exit). This will put you on another raised expressway. Take the first exit off of that(no toll), when you reach the stoplight at the bottom of the exit ramp, do a U-turn. Turn into the Jusco parking lot. I prefer to take the second left and park in the open parking area opposed to the parking garage. Now enter Jusco, on the first floor. Look for the food area. There is a conveyer belt sushi resturant there. Best time to go is early evening.. if you get there after 6PM you could have at least an hour wait. This place is damn good for the price. It is a chain resturant. There is another one at the shopping plaza next to the American Consulate.. and I want to say there is another one in the shopping plaza to the left of the second overpass before you get to Naha.
If anyone is really looking for a very good sushi place that has fresh sushi, 10 pieces, for 1,000 yen with the "aka dashi" the red miso soup. Send me a PM and I will give you directions.:first:
Only serious people need respond, the place is down south and gets customers from all over the island.
They only take yen and do not speak any English, the menu is also in Japanese, the counter only seats a limited number of customers.
However once you have eaten there, "other" izakaya sushi or sashimi doesnt quite meet the same standard.

can you pick what 10 pieces you get? I dont like a lot of what comes on plates like that.

Sorry but no you cant, usually what comes is maguro, ebi, tako, ika, salmon, egg, buri, saba, and then two "others" which could be anything from irabu-cha or tai or something else.
If you special order, which is fine the price will differ according to the cost of the fish ordered.
Plus there are usually fish in the tank, a 1 ton tank, that you could choose from but the prices are higher. There are also large clams, fresh oysters, and other assorted shell fish usually available as well.

I just revisited the Tomari Fish Market a few days ago. If you like really fresh sashimi and sushi ridiculously inexpensive, try to pass by the place. If anything, it's quite a cultural experience.
Also the place to go if you're planning for a party or show visitors around.
If interested, here are simply directions: South on Naha on Rt 58. At the stoplight heading south just before the bridge north of the Kariyushi Urban Resort, turn right.
Go pass the Tomari Port (on your left) and follow the road under the Tomari bridge bearing right. At the first opportunity, turn left and you're right at the place. Park and enjoy.
Go early enough and you'll may even see the fishermen auction off their catch on the building to the left next to the pier.

I would only like to add that it really isnt the kind of place that one would go to to sit down and expect service like they were at a restaurant. It is a fish market.
I would also highly recommend it for anyone looking for fish or sushi to take home.
