I know when I was in the Marines there were a lot of Mexicans and Filipinos that had green cards in the states, non citizens though and they were able to join the Marine Corps so can I join the japan Self defense Force with a Geijin To or do you HAVE to be a Japanses citizen?

Sorry to ask a question in response to a question here however I think it is appropriate.

Can you or the person who wants to join, or even just for discussions sake, speak, read and write Japanese fluently enough to take the test?

I don't know the answer however I could ask someone who does know if you are serious here.

Well, my 17 y/o son recieved literature in the mail at his grandparents house from the JGSDF or the JASDF. He is dual citized but has an American first and last name and they were obviously interested...

if he is duel citizen and lives in japan, japan conciders him/her japanese. so yes, he can join the japanese military. Pretty sure that an non japanese citizen cannot join the japanese military. You cannot even become a citizen. Maybe for permenant residents though.

You can become a Japanese citizen if you really want to but it's not easy. Check out this web site; this guy knows a lot about the laws of Japan.

Also some interesting stories and articles about living in Japan.

Yes, you can become a Japanese citizen, it's jut a difficult lengthly process. My wife's uncle is married to a Taiwanese woman who was on a work visa on one of the smaller islands. I believe it took her close to 10 or 12 years to become a Japanese citizen. But she went all out learning to fully read and write all the Japanese... Not sure if she had to wait that long or not though, it was years ago...
