View Full Version : The New Credit System
We now have a credit system on these forums, which means I will soon be getting rid of the minimum posts per day to play in the arcade. You may now earn credits by...
Creating topics
Creating posts
Creating polls
Rating threads
Referring new members to the forums
etc, etc, etc. I will add a complete list to this in a bit.Just do what you do as regular members here and you will stockpile points without even realizing it. The next step is to assign a point value to games in the arcade. Once that is done, you can use the points you've accumulated during your day to day activities and spend as many or as few credits per day as you'd like.
You can also transfer credits to other members. Which means, once again, my wife will have possession of all of my money.
Enjoy. Earn some credits by posting your views in here. I'm still learning this system, so this will be educational for all of us right now. But first, brb, I need to add a few more plug-ins to this credit system and we'll be all set.
I've been wanting to add this plug-in for a few months but haven't had the time to do it.

Yes, it's true! It's the same way with my wife:(
The trick is to not let her know how much money you REALLY make:D
I need to turn off the forums for a little bit to finish up a plug in. The forums will be going down from 11:30 for half an hour or so. Just FYI in case anyone reads this. Should be back up around midnight.

You can't go to bed! YOU HAVE CREDITS TO SPEND!!!! :p

So exactly what is the credit point system?
Like what bases the increment of points you get off a post?
So far I have seen no set amt for a post....seems like it varies...like there is some kind of factor to how many points you get for a post.
That was a painless upgrade. :D
Points vary by amount of words in a post, so that 5 post per day thing will soon be unecessary. I haven't quite figured everything out yet, but points vary from post to post and other actions you do.
Before anyone says anything...
You currently do not have an Arcade Pass. You can buy one for 10,000 Credits by clicking here (http://www.japanupdate.com/forum/credits.php?do=ibp_buypass).
An Arcade Pass allows you to play games for free, but to receive jackpot Credits you need to pay the game cost.I know. I'm working on it.

Whoa! This sounds great. Kinda like forum money. I think members should have to pay tax to the forum government, too.
Very interesting. I wonder how complex this could evolve?
10,000 credits is steep. I'm working on lowering that or getting rid of it altogethre. You can still play in the arcade without it. In fact, it's better without it as you can earn more credits by getting top ranking in games supposedly.
Games cost 25 credits, which is about what you earn for making a post. I am considering lowering this, but as it's easy to earn 80+ credits in a single post I'm not sure what I'll do yet. Still pondering.

I could see a virtual shop spring up here, dk.
Like say someone wanted to buy an "exclude someone from participating in a thread chit"? Say John doesn't like Tom, and doesn't want him to participate in a thread he has created, so he would contact you and tell you to substract through admin controls whatever it is the cost of keeping someone out.
Say like 5,000 points. I mean, such a purchase like that should be steep. But man, a real economy of forum goods to not only include the arcade could be created. lol.
Anything is possible, but I didn't write this code. I just installed it. So I'm pretty much limited to the options they have available for now until I become more familiar.
But, say, somebody wanted to purchase 25,000 credits for $5 (USD) to avoid the hassle of posting, etc... I could see something like that eventually coming into play. But I'd like to discuss that with the boss. If these forums are ever going to make money like this, I'd like it to be my personal tip jar... Seriously, do I not deserve tips when I'm still working on this stuff and it's already past midnight? :D

On a forum I had visited a few years ago, I had suggested an economy be put into place. It was a Vbulletin board similar to this, and when I had suggested it they laughed me out of the place saying such a code plug in would be impossible to program.
Man, I think I even said that the money one would earn would be tied to posts and lengths of posts. I had submitted a pretty detailed plan to them concerning it.
What shortsighted chumps they are!
Hey, maybe one of them was a programmer and took my idea and ran with it. I smell a get rich law suit on my side.
Maybe, you never know. Did you keep records of the conversation? :o

No, but I bet I could find them burried deep in the pages of that forum if they didn't prune them.
Man, I am serious. I had a good point system for making money and what kinds of things it could be used for. Except for an arcade. Didn't even think of that since that forum had no arcade at the time.
I was a visionary a few years ahead of my time....eeeerrrr or some other programmer's time.
Well, I don't think he's making any money off of it, so the most you'll probably get is a pat on the back. :p

Only bummer with the credit system is I can't mindlessly play game after game. I will eventually run out of credits and won't be able to play. :(
As a special present before I go to sleep, I'm giving our top 10 posters a bunch of credits. Ten credits for every post you've made on these forums so far. That should give you a good buffer to do with as you please and get used to the new system. Enjoy.
I will probably grant some credits to some of our more recent members who have become valuable contributors as well. Feel free to nominate yourself. You must have more than 300 posts to nominate yourself.

ANother question here; DK are you ONLY the keeper of the keys on this one or do moderators also have access to giving out credits as well?
Plus IF and when infractions, personality conflicts, disagreements, or knee jerk reactions occur, are you dk planning on using the credits as a system of fining members for perceived or actual discrections? If so are Moderators also going to have access to giving out or rescinding credits?

I saw something like this on another site. You could spend your credits on little custom images and use them in your signature. You could also change the color of your username by spending credits. You can even spend your credits and change other user's username and/or user title. That costs a lot of credits and only you could see it I think.
They also had a bank! I used to throw all my credits (they were called gil at this site) in the bank and let them compound interest. I think I have like 150,000 gil in the bank at that site and I don't even visit there that much anymore.
Maybe we could use up our points and power level. Gain some HP and kick each others virtual butts. Gotta use credits to revive and heal up... getting KO'd could keep you from posting in a topic... Like a JU role playing game.. :D
They also had a system like that. You had a health bar that would go down if you got into trouble. But, the more you posted, the more exp you got, and your level would go up. So you health would go up as well.

After reading all five pages, I still require clarification.
I used to be able to play a game, like Toy Chest, as often as I wanted. With this new credit system in place, can I still do that? Once you've "paid" to play a game, can you continue to play that particular game over and over again for a particular length of time? Or is it a one shot deal?
I know that there are game sites elsewhere, but I've been having Java and other dll whatever issues with them. The JU arcade doesn't give me error readings. I'd be bummed if it it was a one-trick pony thing. I may not have posted much to the forum, aside from padding, because most of the active threads were... well, you know how they were.

It's 25 credits per game play. You pick up on average 20-80 credits per post depending on size, and I gave you a ton of credits for your past use of this forum, so I doubt you'll run out of credits anytime soon. Just keep doing what you do and post when you want and you shouldn't run out. You also earn credits by coming in anywhere from 1st to 5th place in a game. Each game has a jackpot, and the jackpot gets higher the more people play. Which is another reason I need to make it a monthly thing to reset scores.
Cool, free credits! How can we tell who the richest member is?

Dk have you managed to put together an better explaination about the 10,000 credits for a one week pass?
Or have you considered lengthening the time? Seems to me that 10,000 for one week is a bit steep.
What do you think?
I'm considering lowering the price or removing that notification and just leaving it for kids accounts. It's almost useless as credits are so easy to get by posting. I can't see anyone really needing one aside from people who use the arcade who don't post (my wife, kids, people who want to pay me $5).
Right now it's seven days. I'll probably up it to two weeks.

dk, do letters in OPs count as double credit than just the letter of posts within threads? I think that OP letters should earn more for someone has taken the innitiative to begin a discussion. Just a thought.
Sorry if you had already addressed this. I think you may have touched on it before, but this thread kinda got away from me, and, therefore, have not read all the posts here.
I'm really not sure, and I don't know how easy it would be to make changes to the logic behind the point system. I'll look into it next time I run into a bunch of free time though.

A one-week arcade pass now only costs 1000 credits. This may be a bit too low. I may bump it up to 2500 or so, but I want to see how well the forums do with this set at 1000.
You cannot win game jackpots if you are using an arcade pass. You can only win jackpots if you pay credits to play games.

There seems to be a javascript error somewhere in the code. I'll try to track it down this week. For now, you might want to find a way to turn off that reporting in your browser. Hopefully this isn't affecting many people. It's not affecting mine or my wife's browser's whatsoever.
But it irritates me having a "Javascript error" icon at the bottom left side of my screen...

So what does it mean when you want to use points to qualify for jackpot?
You pay 25 credits every time you play a game in the arcade. If you do beat the high score, your 25 credits go into the jackpot. If you place anywhere from 2nd to 5th place, you win SOME credits back, but if you get 1st place, you win all of the credits that are in the jackpot.
Right now, that penguin game has a jackpot of 3,937 credits. If you beat the high score, you are given 3,937 credits.

Im starting to wonder if some members that didn't have that many post feel a little betrayed by the new credit system. Especially if they liked coming on for the arcade and posted 5 a day to play. I wonder if they came and thought forget this i cant get 1000 points, for whatever reason.
I guess im am saying maybe everyone under a certain amount of post that were regulars should have gotten 1000 credits to play the arcade then when their pass ran out they would have had to earn it.
No biggy just a thought.

I just had and idea that you might like fonze. What if everyone got a monthly credit allowance? It could be based off of how much time you've spent on the forums. Let's say newbies only get 2,000 a month, but after you've been here a few months you get 4,000 credits. While senior members could get 6,000 credits a month or something in that ballpark (actual allowance would be up to dk). You would still earn credits from posting too! The users who come here just for the arcade would blow their credits right away. Yet they would be more inclined to stick around and post because they can still earn credit from posting.

Oh and, of course, if it can be done at all.

I realize it is an idea and would like to add a couple of comments, what about having or giving the allowance to people that actually post as well.
I am not suggesting a minimum of 5 posts a day or anything like that, adjusting the number of credits given each month based partially at least upon the number of posts one makes. Also I would suggest a minimum of 3,000 credits per month, only because the current cost of a week pass to the arcade is 1,000 credits per week. It shouldnt be too hard for someone over the course of the month to get enough credits during the course of the month to make up the last 1,000 for the final week.
Then they would get a "new" credit allowance the following month. Do you follow my trend of thought here?
Also I couldn"t imagine giving credits monthly to someone who has signed up here and made only a couple of posts. Their credits would skyrocket over time.
Well this is pretty much moot until dk gets online here and throws his 2 yen in:D
Good idea though P!

I like this idea of yours... I think that it will set a normality to everything...
Something to also throw out there... So you think that there is a way that you can set the Lottery to have a winner everytime?
Thanks for the ideas, all of you. I've been considering the allowance thing for a few weeks, but I haven't yet decided how I want to do it or how many credits I want to give.
One idea I have is to make this based on usergroup. When you sign up for the forums and activate your account, you are set into the usergroup "members". I'm thinking about creating a few new usergroups for our really active posters, or maybe tie this in with the ranking sytem we discussed before that I haven't yet found time to make active.
Once this is up, I will install a plug-in I've been looking at that allows me to setup credit allowances for different membership types.
The main thing I don't want to do is give away so many credits that our new users never post; however, having the appearance that a lot of users are online, even if most are just using the arcade, still makes these forums inviting for potential new members.
So yeah, I like you guys' ideas, and I can see it possible for me to set something up like this for the allowances:
Temp-banned members: 0 credits / month
Non-active members: 500 credits / month
Active members: 1000 credits / month
Really active members: 4000 credits / month
Premium members (paid): 5000 credits / month + 50000 credits per $5 donation
Moderators: 8000 credits per month
Administrator: 8000 credits per month
Credit allowances will be paid automatically on the first of the month every month. Hopefully the allowance plug-in I'm looking at can cover these capabilities.
How does this sound?
Something to also throw out there... So you think that there is a way that you can set the Lottery to have a winner everytime?
There's no way, but I can make the odds a lot better. Right now we're using a 5-ball 1-30 random number setup. I could reduce it to a 3-ball 1-10 random number setup, but the payout would be a lot less. Let me know if you guys want me to do this.
I personally just wish there was an automatic way where you could tell the system, "I want to spend 1000 credits on lottery tickets every day" and it'd automatically buy your tickets rather than you having to sit there for an hour clicking buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy buy *sigh* buy buy buy buy *cursing* buy buy buy buy buy *mother....* buy buy buy...
So, what do you guys think about what I said in this post? Please dissect it and let me know. I really appreciate your voices on this!

Sounds good to me. I think once new posters get on and find out they can get more credits the more the post, the more they will stay on. If someone gets stupid, there is enough of you' all that will give them whats up. As far as payout go, i think they are fine where there at. If they don't pay, move on to another game. That's how it works sometimes. Hopefully you will get it approved for us to "buy" credits. That would be alot cheaper than me throwing $100 at the bullshit games in the club that are supposed to have 70% return..........hogwash:thumbdown:

I really like the first part, but again... I think that you and the mods have to ask yourself, is this a online gambling center/arcade/forum... or is this a forum/arcade/online gambling center? I like the fact that you are adding all this little toys for the kiddies, but i think that the more that you get into this online credits thing, you might... MIGHT... have people only coming for the games and the casino. Is that not getting away from the true meaning behind the forums, or are the forum just a weigh stations and you really don't care what people do as long as they do it here?
I agree with H&R. I think that this has a better affect than what it would be like to have gone to a real casino. I would be flat broke...at least here, all i lose is a part of my pride.
AS far as the Lottery, i don't think that you sound lower the numbers. All you would have to do is buy about 1500 credits (I really have no idea, but it sounds like I added it all up... maybe I did) worth of tickets and you would win everytime. There are only so many choices that you can pick from before you have them all, and a winning ticket everytime. Maybe if you limited the number of tickets you can buy, and lowered the numbers?

Really, the more I think about it, the main thing I am trying to do with these forums is fill a niche. These forums are able to do a lot of things very well. If you want to find information, you can find it here. If you want to ask questions, provide information, or just have a humorous discussion, you're able to do it here. If you want to play video games, you can do it here. If you want to play in our casino, you can do it here. And if you want to put your photography or graphics design artwork on display, you can do it here. And you can do it all while listening to one of hundreds of radio stations covering many genres of music.
The more I think about it, I'm mainly just trying to provide a place to hang out online on Okinawa. I should eventually monotize these forums somehow by placing banner ads up on display if you're not a registered member, but that's not my top priority. I should definitely find a way to link these forums back to the money-making sections of our website though (classifieds, autos, etc).
But in the grand sceme of things, I'm just trying to build a community where people can join up to do one of many things to have a good time online. I am not trying to build a one-single-style forum. These forums aren't just for hard-core debate, nor are they only for gaming or gambling. They're for everything. I just want to see people having a good time and finding information they need. If that one goal is being met, we've done a good deed for Okinawa!

I think madhatter has made a good point. Perhaps having an arcade with a system of points and scores/credits would not be so bad if the topic of those stayed soley in the arcade section, however, it bleads out into other threads. Someone will start talking about how they are poor and to lend them credits or what not, or talking about how they just bested someone's high score.
Why not just split the forum? From the JU web page make two ports that one chooses to go to and log in on that platform. That way there will be a discussion forum and discussion can go forth without interference. Gamers can have their own game room they can log into separately.
I really don't see the need. Sure, there's some spillage sometimes, but it's not killing the forums. I feel very strongly about keeping the arcade, casino, and photoplog all a strong part of the forums, and not as separate entities. If spillage happens, it happens.

I like the fact that I can spin the wheel and go to a different page and talk to some friends while I wait for my fortune to get thrown away.
Now that i step back and think about all those conversation that we had on the forums and wait they mean. I think that you are right. There is some kind light that comes from this place. There about 200 out of 597 that seem to think so. i mean people are still posting at 2 in the morning on a Sunday. This place is turning into a central or hub for allot of the American knowledge on and about this island. I think that you should step back too for a minute there DK and give yourself a pat on the back. I say this not only as your friend, but as a member that daily learns more and more at the benefit of "YOUR" forums. I only say that they are yours in the fact that you spend most of your off time perfecting this to make everything better for us. I Sir Thank you.

We say that we are almost 600 strong, but i always see the same names when i'm posting. Not that this is a bad thing, I'm just saying that you have a killer product here with some really cool inter working parts. the fuel to that is the credits, this fuel may cause more people to act as a "member" instead of a "gamer". Sure some people will join just for the casino and arcade, and the allowance would help them with that. But even before we had a credits system, people still came here just for the games. So no matter what system is in place, people will try to take advantage of it for the purpose of using the arcade.
I agree with what Mad Hatters says. This place has become hub for knowledge about the island, and japan, for americans. You did a really good job with these forums dk, and I really enjoy using them. I've never really stayed active at a forum as long as I have this one. I guess that's two things I'm in debt to you for dk:D Oh and it is a group effort as well. All the great users on this board keep me coming back as well!
Thanks for the pat on the back. :)
People are welcome to come and go as they please. As long as they find some value in the forums at one point in their life, that's good enough for me. We're really still just getting started in here. I envision this forum being the heart of JU by the time I'm done with it. The classifieds are great and all, but I really believe that, if done right, these forums will be the heartbeat of JapanUpdate.com. Maybe not the bread and butter, but definitely the circulation. The classifieds may keep people returning to JU, but nowhere near the ability that a well-built, active forum will.

I agree with you that there is a great product here, however I also see it as going through a number of growing pains, particularly with the casino being added as recently as it has, I think that people are still feeling their way around here in trying to figure out how to use their credits and what their credits do for them.
Right now the credits are only good for the gaming side, however without one there isnt the other, the pool of knowledgeable people here sharing that knowledge about Okinawa.
I would still participate here even if there werent any side attractions of the arcade or casino They both are great attractions but I personally hope that they dont become the "main" event here. But even if they do it's ok as well, it is a pretty damn good community in my opinion.

The first line of this reply bothers me to a degree/somewhat. Sure it is an internet forum, but for a forum and the supporting community to grow and get stronger the idea that people can come and go as they please, nudged on or otherwise, is not really conductive to making a community grow.
I realize that is not how you meant that to come out, because I do get the impression that you would like to have more members stay and help to make this a more stable community instead of just having transients all the time.
The forums could become the gateway to the classifieds and much more as well. The classifieds are probably the money maker right now and because of that it is probably going to be difficult in the short run to make them the focal point of growing this site.
I for one would have no problems for example in seeing minor banner ad advertising here on the forums. That could be a money maker as well, along with creating a system where your "premium" membership could get rid of them by paying a small fee for the service.
Back to the point though......
I would hope that creation of a community that doesnt always have the come and go as you please attitude would work more positively towards the goal of growing the forum. :D

i think that it's that very freedom that makes this forum what it is. I think that when people or things are set in place to help govern you to grow, you WILL NOT see the better expansion rate as you would if you allowed the very nature of the thing to carry itself to a new level. (Big run on... whatever) I really thin that's what's going on here. The very nature and good spirit of the forum is taking itself to new levels with the main help of all of us. More some than others. DK being the backbone.

I didn't mean to sound negative. I'm part of several other forums as well as this one, but I only drop by those forums once every month or two if I'm interested in catching up with old friends or finding some information. By "come and go as they please", I don't mean forever. But if someone found use on these forums back in July, dissappeared for two months to take care of something, and then came back in October, I wouldn't hold it against him for being absent. As long as they're finding some value in these forums, I'm golden.

Gottchya...Thank you for adding this. I also have found myself spending less time on other forums, and bouncing between this one and one I "work" at.
There is something about the atmosphere here that keeps me attracted, thanks largely I think to the manner in which things are run here all things positively considered.
Also it is sure a hell of a lot easier to get together with people here than the ones I know in Europe, NA, SA, Africa etc etc etc..........

dk,
How about creating a "New Ideas" thread where users can submit ideas for the JU forums; then you can evaluate and give credits as "incentive".
Let me start. (You can move this post if necessary.)
How about a menu ordering section for select or interested take-out / delivery restaurants?
I know online ordering systems exist in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and major cities. So why not Okinawa? 200 or so active posters are a "captured market".
The link can be called "Order Food Online" on the top menu bar alongside arcade & casino.
An add-on could even presently exist in vbulletin but you'd be the guy who knows. (Below are some working links.)
You develop this as an additional option for JU forum users, but at the same time, if properly done, it could be a profit center for Print 21 /JU. You charge interested parties for monthly listing fees (Merosys pricing below for as little as $25 basic) and also have income on a commission basis.
Some links:

http://www.merosys.com/pricing.php
http://www.delphissoftware.com/
(I've used delphi in projects and their products are robust, but could be expensive.)
Actually this is just fun for me. No need to think about "credits", but this can be a good idea for JU. Just a way of users giving back although you can always call it the "Patriot Online Food Corner". ;-)

I dont think there is much i can add. dk you have done some great things on here and I have tons of respect for chobi for sacrificing her husband and your daughter for allowing you to be so involved. I know this has helped me vent and have a somewhat different social life than i was accustomed to. I'm glad i came and hope others especially new members have a good time here too.
Edited to add
You to TP and DocP are great!
Thanks for your words Ja and Fonze.
I'll think about that food idea, although my first reaction is that I don't know how a food ordering system would be of much use on these forums. We've been working on building a restaurants section of our website though. I don't know. But I'll have a look through those links and re-read your post a few times later. :) Thanks.

I was trying to get caught up on this thread, but I got sidetracked after I saw "golden shower".
To add to what fonze said:

I too, love to be able to come here and vent my frustrations. I don't even care if anyone is listening or if I get any replies! I also thought it was great to meet everyone at the JU meet. I thought it was a great opportunity to meet some people outside of work and the base. Especially since a good majority of my friends have PCSed out of here already.
