View Full Version : Dolphin Slaughter

I just saw a piece on the news about Japanese fishermen slaughtering dolphins in a bay on the mainland.
(AP) An environmental group claimed Wednesday that Japanese fishermen use unnecessarily brutal methods to hunt dolphins, releasing a videotape that shows the mammals being forced into a cove to be killed, with the water turning red from the blood. (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/10/29/world/main580845.shtml)

I saw video of this part on the news.

YouTube - Heroes star Hayden Panettiere protests over Dolphin killings

"The 18-year-old star of the TV blockbuster "Heroes" paddled out on a surfboard in an attempt to reach a pod of dolphins to stop them from being driven into a nearby cove and killed."

I didn't know that people actually ate dolphin. I'd heard that dolphins get trapped in tuna nets. It doesn't seem right to kill the dolphins in the water like that, making them swim through the blood of the dead dolphins. I also saw a thing on sharks being killed. The piece I saw was a shark hunt in the wild. They didn't round up a school of sharks into a cove and systematically kill them. I understand the desire to eat these animals. I just don't think they handled it well.

It's not just sad it actually pisses me off for a couple of reasons. There is no reason to kill the dolphins. The meat has a very limited market. Even whale meat is becoming less and less desired in Japan. The other reason is that the fisherman are allowed to make violent advances and actually use their engine and boat/ gaffs to attempt to scare/ram people and the powers to be do nothing. There has been and continues to be very reckless and dangerous actions made by fishermen in order to protect their water space (as if they own it) with no consequences. Water related accidents continue to climb but they just blame it all on the jet skiers.:cursing:

Socal, that video isn't playing. I noticed it is a Google video. I think the forum here can only support Youtube vids. Do you mind if I edit it out? And if I can place a Youtube vid in there in its place, or you could find a Youtube vid yourself and let me know. Send the link via PM and I will fix it.

These guys i was watching made a good point to normal logical open minded people. They said if there if there is a consumer for dolphin meat and the animal is not enangered the only issue is the way it's caught. Can you guys agree?

They also said that the only reason people care so much about the is the way the media has portrayed them(flipper). Why not so much, if any, attention on the plight of sharks? could it be the medis portrayl of them?

That's kinda the way I was thinking. The way they caught and killed the dolphins could've been done a different way. I also mentioned the shark thing. I'm not denying folks their legal eats. There's just got to be another way to get it done.

I've heard that the dolphin industry isn't that big in japan, and that those videos make it seem worse then it is. Something like only two town still fish for dolphins and japan is only allowed to take 3,000 dolphin a year and seldom take that many. But they could be faking the number they actually take too.

Finally got around to fixing your OP video, Socal. Be sure to take a look at it. Yeah, I know it is not the exact one, but I think close enough.

Sorry it took so long.

By the way, one of the major activists against the dolphin roundup that results in the slaughtering and selling of these animals to resort hotels and aquaria is Ric O'berry (sp?). He is staunchly against them in show business as well. Quite ironic, because he was one of the original trainers of the old Flipper movies. After reflecting on exploiting dolphins he had a change of heart and is now one of the most outspoken critics of the dolphin industry in all its forms.

Actually, Doug, the video you posted above -- I am almost sure is from the scenes his org filmed just a few years back that he also narrated.

Yes, your pics are usually rather creative and funny. And, sometimes they fit more than one thread.:thumbup1:

Oh, and Muku, I posted a follow-up story that is on the exact same topic as Socal's original post. No need to start a new topic for a follow-up story. This way, folks can review the news that lead to this most recent story, or skip right to the latest news.:star:

A recap, for those who may have missed it...

So long so long so long so long and thank for all the fish!

What is he saying? "You're either an activist or ......" something.

It seemed that video cut him off.

I'm against killing dolphins only because they are shini smart. Can't we eat something else?

I certainly disagree with the method of doing it, onthe other hand, I could care less about the actual eating of dolphin, as long as its not an endangered type. I'd prefer to see these so called tasty dolphins bred in captivity for the purpose of slaughter. How about that?

I mean, that way it wouldnt really affect the existing eco system, and it would be no different than farming any other animal, shellfish, tuna, etc right?
