Hey guys, I just wanted to introduce myself and get some info from ya'll. I'm currently in NC and will be arriving in early spring on the island stationed at Futenma. I have many questions but I'll only throw a few out there with more to follow.
1. Is there surf or good surf spots on Okinawa? I know, I know it's an island (dummy) but I haven't been able to track down good information on the scene.
1a. Can you live close (walking distance w/ board) to said surf spots?
1b. I ride a LB and shipped my 9.6 with the goods, will I need another
board? Short/Long?
2. What day is college football on and where do the Nebraska faithful (or anyone)congregate? I think its Friday early morning but I'm unsure.
3. Are there multi br Apts or houses where a couple of guys can live comfortably (near surf spots)?
There's much more but for an into I think that's plenty. Thanks.
GBR!

Welcome! I'll let others help you about the surf and apartments.
College football is on right now. (Sunday morning from around 2am to 1pm local) As for congregations of Nebraska faithful, is there really such a thing anymore?? j/k!
Pro ball is on Mondays same times and Monday night football is on Tuesday from around 9:30am to 1pm.
The surf here is kinda calm IMO, but I am not a surfer. It's not what I picture when I think of surfing...but then I picture Pipeline and such. I do know that quite a few people surf here, and they seem to enjoy themselves...not to mention a lot of people come here as tourists so that they can surf as well.
I do hope that someone who knows more about it will give you some better information.

Nice... Sunday morning works for me, better than Friday. As for NFL I'm a NE guy and only vaugly aware that they play football on Sunday(Monday).
Take it easy on the Huskers Doc; TO is back and change is in the air.

Welcome to the forums. First the apartment thing. It depends on your rank as to if you can live offbase or not. There are tons of apartments right next to the water.
Im not a surfer, so this info is 2nd or 3rd hand. Girl from Hawaii thinks the waves here are a joke (no surprise), but as stated, many people do surf here. There are several specific spots that I have seen numerous surfers at any given time. The other thing to consider is that when the waves are the best (when storms are close), military members are not allowed in the water.
As for the college football thing, you might actually like it alot. Its kind of like watching football on sundays in the states, except its college vice pro...and you have to get up a bit earlier. There is no real congregation spot (publicly like hooters or a local sportsbar) for any football fans that I have seen or heard of. I have no doubt there are plenty of fans for pretty much any college team, even Nebraska...lol. It is just a matter of finding them and getting together.

You might have better luck with the college football than I do. I'm an FSU fan and lets just say they haven't been receiving a lot of coverage. I'm listening to ESPN radio on line to catch updates on a game right now. Its 6:43am right now uggh... Also watching a play by play tracker from my home team's website. Being military you'll easily be able to watch AFN they may or may not have your team on depending on what games are going to be televised. I'm not military or SOFA and my Japanese TV doesn't pick up AFN so I'm SOL on college ball :(
On the surfing it does exist and there seems to be quite a few people that enjoy it here despite the relatively small waves. There are plenty of places to live around here that put you within a minute walk of the ocean. It takes me about 2 minutes from my apartment.
Welcome to the site and an early welcome to the island.
