'Abusive language caused work-related suicide' (http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/dy/national/20071017TDY04306.htm)
The Yomiuri Shimbun

The Tokyo District Court on Monday ruled that the death of a 35-year-old company employee who killed himself as a result of his supervisor's abusive language was work-related, and demanded the government pay compensation to the man's family. ...

The subsection chief joined the branch in April 2002, and habitually used abusive language toward the man. The language included comments such as: "Your existence is offensive to my eyes. Get out of my sight," "You're a wage-snatcher parasitizing the company," and, "You're a social phobic, aren't you?"

The man developed symptoms of adjustment disorder and depression in December 2002 and January 2003. ...

The subsection chief's words were excessively strict and belittled the man's character and even his existence. The man's mental burden was much larger than that usually caused by day-to-day problems between a junior worker and a supervisor," the judge said.

I guess words can kill. Perhaps the parents of this man failed in raising him by not growing a thick skin for him in his youth.

Well, the judge here seems to put the burden on the man's work supervisor.

This is true, words can kill. Words hurt, maime, injure and damage people in many ways. That is the way our society is. It is a shame though. It doesnt have to be that way if people wouldnt give words the power....but you already read my other post on this so I wont bore you with it again.

In a practical sense for the majority of the population and average people, I think it is impossible to say that people could ever take away the power of words. There will always be words that have emotional power over the population, though some will lose that power over time, others will merely replace them.

To suggest that words could ever become so neutral, or that humans could ever become so Spock-like to the point where words could not hurt them, is being unrealistic. We are an emotional species.

I treat my japanese employees very well and they bust their asses for me. That abusive type of management doesn't work.
I don't think the government owes the family anything though, man the hell up!

I think we as a society should work on communicating through brain waves vice words...then we would not have to worry about them hurting...lol.

If we all were to be diagnosed with TS than nobody could take offense to any words that were said. I guess that's another way of solving the problem :D

Funny story that kinda relates to this. My wife's brother used to work for a hotel on island. Well he became a manager, and moved to fukuoka to work at a hotel there. Seems like his boss was pretty abusive and rude and he couldn't take it. He ended up returning home for a week and his boss was pissed. But after he explained the situation to his boss his boss stopped acting so mean. I guess he didn't know he was being mean.

Hell no! If people could hear the things I think I would be thrown in jail. Realize that the stuff people say passed through some kind of a filter, imagine what didn't get out. I don't want that out there.:scared:
