Miss Universe, Japan's Riyo Mori, gets a letter (http://blog.peta.org/archives/2007/10/fur_flies_over.php) and videos from PETA Asia Pacific (http://www.petaasiapacific.com/) educating her on fur.
TOKYO -- Miss Universe Riyo Mori of Japan (http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/breakingnews/breakingnews/view_article.php?article_id=94820) has agreed to stop wearing fur after a protest campaign by animal-rights activists, an official with the beauty pageant said Tuesday.
"She declined to wear a fur coat for an event in China next Friday," said Ines Ligron, national director in Japan for the Miss Universe Organization. "She refused even though she was kind of pressured to wear fur."
And here is an excerpt of that letter:
... As Miss Universe, you are expected to be a positive role model who sets a good example. All eyes are on you. By choosing to wear fur, not only are you directly responsible for the deaths of dozens of animals, you’re also sending a clear message to everyone who sees you that animals’ lives are less important than fashion—you validate the fur industry, and you validate cruelty. Prove that your beauty is more than skin deep. Please do the decent and compassionate thing and stop wearing fur. ...
Cheers to PETA (http://blog.peta.org/archives/2007/10/miss_universe_c.php) and Miss Universe!

I'd rather she wore nothing at all.

Expanding on this with a little more detail from another news source, we have Riyo Mori's own words on the issue:
TOKYO (AFP) — Miss Universe, Riyo Mori (http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5iHUxkonI2v26J4PPROopgGTOMZEw) of Japan, vowed Tuesday not to wear fur and declared herself an animal lover after a protest campaign by animal rights activists.
"I will say this out loud: I will not wear fur," Mori told AFP. "I love animals and I agree with those who oppose wearing fur products."
Nice to see she is no fur hag.
No customer for the fur industry(another of the animal exploitation industries) from Miss Mori. And she agrees with PETA on the issue.

Looks like she made that decision all on her own. Just like these folks
http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapcf/10/13/myanmar/index.html
-- Hundreds of villagers living on the outskirts of Myanmar's biggest city, Yangon, marched in support of the country's military junta Saturday after being threatened with steep fines if they did not, a political activist leader hiding in Yangon told CNN by phone.
Gotta love scare tactics :D

lol. Yes, all those blacks in the 60s and their marching, threatening diners with sit-ins, and rioting after the assasination of MLK and all the fear they put into people to push for civil rights. The system bent to those demanding change. Yeah, scare tactics.
I also geuss it is scary getting your head bashed for your skin, and that is if the person decides not to peel it off of you while you are still alive. Scary, indeed.

Uh not seeing the connection with the civil rights movement and scare tactics

And it's great she has this choice as people who decide to wear it should be respected for theirs.

No mention of it in her Blog... must not be that big of a deal to her anyway
So, she has decided to stop wearing fur? Or she chose to just not wear fur at one event? The former is stated, but I see no evidence of her making a decision to no longer EVER wear fur.

I also heard that she is no longer going to wear underwear... oh wait... I was sleep typing again... damn you dreams for giving me hope!!!!!
Dude! Don't change your avatar!!! :( :( :(
Stop human cruelty! Stop wearing clothes altogether!

Well, people do backslide from time to time. Never know.
But when someone gets a letter and video from PETA on the topic, and since PETA opposes fur, and then that person makes this comment soon after:
...I agree with those who oppose wearing fur products."
What with those who oppose fur products is she agreeing with?
Connecting the dots is pretty easy as to what she is implying.
This story just broke the last few days, and PETA is waiting for her to make a stronger statement and to be more explicit in her renouncing of fur. I think that will come in a little while.
But in any case, yeah, she could backslide.

Oh man, I bet they're on her to make a stronger statement. Probably sleeping on her doorstep so she can be their new spokeswoman.

Just because she agrees with those who opose fur products doesn't mean she supports PETA. It cracks me up how PETA uses people like this. Just because someone shares similar views to your group doesn't automatically make them a part of it. I wonder how many 'true' members they actually have.

PETA is like that little kid who always says "are we there yet" and never shuts up!

No, what I'm asking is whether or not she specifically said she will stop wearing fur altogether or if the news source you just quoted from is full of shit? Because I didn't hear a single actual quote from her in the article leading one way or the other. I agree with a lot of animal welfarists (I believe that's the phrase you used before) people out there on certain topics. Doesn't mean I'm not going to ever own a leather wallet or not eat meat. The only thing that I've seen is her trying to get peta off her back.
Sources. Sources. If the newspaper says she's giving up fur, I want to see it in her words.
Also, with your quote above, what's the context? Could I see the rest of the quote before the ...? What was the rest of the sentence? Where was this found?

What should I do with the skins from all of the animals I eat? If fur is a no, no, then is a rug ok?

The only thing that I've seen is her trying to get peta off her back.
You mean you have come to that conclusion? I didn't see her exact words saying that. Looks like you are trying to connect dots, but no dots exist to support your conclusion.
Her quote agreeing with those who oppose fur is the more substantive one to draw a pretty strong inference from.
I trust my dots more than I trust your dots. :p

lol.
Well, her quote specifically says she agrees with those who oppose fur.
I agree with people who are against whaling.
Doesn't mean I wouldn't ever try whale meat if it was right in front of me and the animal was already dead.
Which does she value the most, I wonder? Her modeling career? Or her being against wearing animal fur? We should know pretty well within a few years.
This seems very spur of the moment to me. I read this story a few weeks ago, actually. PETA confronted her for wearing fur at one of her shoots I believe (which means, she really doesn't feel too strongly about it one way or the other). To get PETA off her back, she agrees with them now publically. You don't see that?
It's more along the lines of, "Ok, shut up, I won't wear fur, not gtfo of my dressing room and leave me alone."
My bet is it won't stick.
Well, here's the answer:

Good for her.
Here's the quote:
"I will say this out loud: I will not wear fur," Mori told AFP. "I love animals and I agree with those who oppose wearing fur products."
It'll be interesting to see if that lasts.

I still haven't seen any real sources...(in this thread) What was sited as far as sources were a few articles one from the inquirer of something like that and 2 of them came from PETA-esque sites so:rolleyes: Like I said she didn't even mention this in her blog and I haven't heard about her "giving up fur" anywhere else. The response PETA got was probably something short that came from her publicist or a spokesman for the Miss Universe Organization.(which didn't seem to mention anything about this) You know to keep the loonies quiet.
What's the deal with raising a stink about the fur and not all the leather famous people are wearing these days anyways

I liked this part.
PETA is famous for its publicity stunts and for targeting celebrities who wear fur and companies that sell it.
I get the feeling this is more about not having negative publicity than anything. But whatever.

Also this
"I wonder how many children in Africa would starve to death while some people here spend a lot of money on their pets," she said. "We have to think about more than just what's right in front of us."
ha ha sounds like she doesn't quite get it TP.. haha well at least she mentioned the starving kids in Africa. Good one PETA. oh man that was funny... she called them pets, ah I'm laughing pretty hard over here.
Oh and I'm not convinced this was a victory for PETA in anyway shape or form. In fact It looks more like they took the "get off my back" bait from a beauty queen of all people, who obviously doesn't really get what they stand for.

Eeeeerrrr...you mean like the exact same source I had posted in post #3 (http://www.japanupdate.com/forum/showpost.php?p=25032&postcount=3) of this thread?
Perhaps a few people need glasses.
I guess we both need glasses, because this is exactly what I was asking about from my first (real) post in this discussion...
I will say this out loud: I will not wear fur
Apparently I was blinded by the red text...

For her the situation to accept or decline just arose. A collection of fur coats for an event in China for her to choose from were presented to her and she refused to choose/wear one based on agreeing with those who oppose fur.
But, yes, as you have stated, we will see if it sticks or not.
We're all faced with situations to define or test our own ethics. Apparently, this is one of hers. :p

Agreed.
She seems to have passed this test, the first since agreeing with PETA on the issue of fur. As a person with limitless modeling activities in the future, I am sure we will have more of these tests.

This extract from the same AFP article speaks volumes.
"PETA is famous for its publicity stunts and for targeting celebrities who wear fur and companies that sell it."
A hippie event. Save a couple of minks, foxes, etc..
She still does wear leather shoes, leather handbags and leather belts. I guess the celebration at PETA does not include a bovine victory.
BTW, she's HOT! Along with, Kurara Chibana.

She should boycott clothing all together and also agree to wash my car once a week.
Now with her stance against fur can I assume she is shaved, hmmm?
