You two are so cute.
The regular program isn't that bad...only with certain dj's (and I'm not refering to you Samy).
AFN is just trying to accomidate everyone and it's not easy. There is always going to be at least one, If you can't be diverse in your taste then you are just going to have to be unhappy. Just turn it off or listen to another station. Even put in a CD or tape of your own. Turn on your ipod. There are plenty of other options :)

Like I've said in other threads: If you're going to listen to the radio, you have to be open to some of the music that will be played on it. The Doc makes a good point--Think of how diverse the military is. There may not be a more diverse group of people in the entire world. Then think of Okinawa, the military's largest overseas audience. You have to cater to certain groups of people, whether it be the religious types, the ones who love hard rock, hip hop, R&B, Country, Etc..... If you know what you're in for, why do you listen? If you like sporadicality (don't really know if that's a word), If you like not knowing what's coming next, then just keep listening. It can be really fun to listen to, although, I realize it can be frustrating as well. If you could see what we have to work with, and saw a playlist, you may be more inclined to understand why we play what we play.

Thanks. From what I understand, you guys are pretty limited in what you can play. You get a decent number of artists and whatnot, but you can play the same artist in the same hour, sometimes same song in a day, and you often don't have the royalties to play all of the songs by the artists. Plus I would imagine that you have to play a certain amount of each genre and probably a certain amount of top 100 or 20 hits within a certain time frame as well. You guys do well with what you got I would say. I can't remember if it was you or another DJ that played "Hey BaBy" and actually turned it off after the first min of them saying nothing but "Hey Baby". I had to applaud you guys on that one. The wife and I claim it's our fav song when we tease each other about what's on the radio.
Oh, and Medama_Oyaji...you already started this post...we don't need duplicates.

Sounds like lsitening to J-radio and AFN aren't very different at all. From what I remember there's just as much yapping and the same songs get played over and over. Plus J-radio still plays the American Top-40 as well so I get to hear Ryan-I -got-no-real-thoughts-Seacrest. yay.

But seriously why does a government run station play religious shows? Aren't there enough gospel CDs and religious tapes, books, churches, temples out there already? Is there a need for it on a government run/ funded network?

It's a very good question. Why would government run bases have chapels? I think it all boils down to support, indirectly. That, and morale.

I can tell you that there are plenty of Christians in the military that think that there isnt enough "religion" on the radio or on TV.

For arguments sake here I would add.....and not directed towards any poster in particular here.

Ok then why does a government run station play Rush Limbaugh and what's his name Ed Shultz, or why play American Top 40, or Country, R and B, Jazz or anything else for that matter?

How about just have AFN do public service announcements 24/7, you know the ones, designated drivers, USO, higher education, financial management, stuff like that.....then no one should have a "right" to complain.

I understand where you are coming from though, separation of church and state right? But why then aren't there any programs from the all over the religious/political spectrum including the communist party of the US, or Libertarians, the Wickans, etc etc etc.

I've said this before, and I may be in a minority here but I think that AFN does a damn good job considering the audience and restrictions that they have on them regarding programming, and I would love to challenge people like The Mad Hatter to do better.

For that I can simply say that offering a place of worship for those of a religious following is one thing. It goes along with giving everyone a chance to practice their beliefs. But broadcasting it on government airwaves for all to listen to whether they want to or not is a different story.

I agree with you here completely. I'm not bashing AFN at all on this one. What they play as far as music goes is one thing. I'll chalk that up to personal differences. Yes, they do try to reach everyone and they have a very broad listening group to attend to. The separation of church and state is what I was referring to. However, if they are doing this to reach out to all of their listeners then they should at least include the rest of the religions, even the non religious like agnostics and atheists. If you can't provide for all of them you might as well leave the religious banter off the airwaves.

MO, listen to the radio, and tell me how many times you hear a song in one week on our LIVE shows. We have no control over what is played on the satellite. You may hear it once in the morning and once in the afternoon, but people like you who bitch, adn whine and complain, dude, suck it up. You're on a military island, and the people here shouldn't complain as much as you do. Okay, that's your crux, and you love whining, but dude, it's getting old. You're stupid one line comments will never serve any purpose other than making you look like a whiny bitch. And to top it all off with hot chocolatey syrup, you have no idea what you would rather hear on the radio. Dude, GET A LIFE!!! Get a point and stick with it. I can see your point, hell, even I turn that shit off, but I do have my MP3 player handy during that time. Someone loves to listen to it. Matter of fact, you would be suprised how many people ask me when there is Gospel or Christian music on the radio, or if there ever is at all. So, come out of your shelter, look around, and see that this island is as diverse as anywhere else on Earth, and some people have musical interests other than yours. Be happy we can provide them that. It's a freedom you probably wouldn't want to lose. No one's putting a machine gun to your head and saying, "Listen to it! Listen!" So if you don't like it, turn it off. Then people wouldn't be wasting their whole day telling you what an utter and total lame-ass you are. Note that.

It's a fictional character (one of my favorite) from a 1950s japanese manga called GeGeGe no Kitaro. Medama Oyaji (translates to "eyeball father") is Kitaro's father. Well, it's his father's spirit brought back in the form of his eyeball. Kitaro goes around keeping the balance between the humans and yokai (kinda like japanese demons or ghosts). It's fairly famous and there are 100 statues of all the characters in the creator's home town of sakaiminato.

Here is a link that can explain it better then I can:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeGeGe_no_Kitaro

I really haven't seen much of the series but I always liked medama oyaji. Oh he is in a cup because he likes to keep himself clean and that's his bath!

I really haven't seen much of the series but I always liked medama oyaji. Oh he is in a cup because he likes to keep himself clean and that's his bath!

yes, it used to be my favorite cartoon, growing up here, as well...
