I'm looking for suggetions on great steak spots.
Has anyone been to Cowdy in front of Lester?
I dont know if they serve it anymore but the Pizza House in Urasoe next to Camp Kinser, the building was formerly the US Consulate here, had a great Prime Rib dinner.

I haven't eaten there, I will soon.
That building looks like an old church.

I've eaten at Cowdy's lots of times at lunchtime, as we work near there, since my american colleague's like it, it must be pretty good.
Reasonably priced!
But hell, I wouldn't know a good steak if it hit me in the face, just as
long as it is not from NZ. I know they are really tough.

There is a place on Kocasi (sp?) called Cowboy Steak House. It's right above the StarBucks and it was really good last time I went. The best steak I've had since being on island. They are American portioned as well, lol. It's a little pricey, but not too bad for a good steak dinner. They have honey fries that are to die for! They also have a steak that goes for over 10,000 Yen. Being military, and enlisted ,we didn't quite have the deep pockets for that...nor were we that hungry, lol.

There is a meat place in Itoman that has decent steaks from NZ, a bit pricey 300/gr, however they were not too bad.
Oh Thistle have you had the lamb from NZ, that really isnt bad at all either.
Not directed towards anyone here just a comment;
One thing that I have noticed is that to manyAmericans the Japanese love affair with wagyu doesnt fit their pallet as the meat has too much marbling and isnt good on the grill. The wagyu sucks up all the smoke flavor. Wagyu is best cooked on a searing hot fry pan.

Chilli's steaks are horrible!
Pizza house has some decent steaks. I've yet to find a place on island that has awesome steaks.
But, karubi daiyo does have some very good beef.

The Pizza House building is the old American Consulate residence. I used to work at the Pizza House for a short while when it was located by the Pepsi Cola Company many moons ago.
I have had decent filet mignon at Sam's Cafe.
Yeah, I prefer Pizza House over Sam's, but I will gladly eat at Sam's any chance I get. Tony Romas makes a decent steak, but it's expensive. People usually just go there for the ribs, but anytime I feel like blowing some cash on a big lunch I go there for a steak. Surprisingly good.

You should go to Cowdy's, but be careful and speak in katakana english, they often get the 'rare' and 'well done' mixed up - easy thing to do don't you think:rolleyes:

After eating Kobe steaks, everything else taste like crap.. I go to the 4 seasons in Awase for Kobe steak. Ive also been told that Jacks Place on Kadena has Kobe steak for pretty cheap(compaired to off base).
Cowdy's.. ate there once, probably never again. wasnt bad.. just wasnt good enough to make me want to go back.
Cowboy's on Kokusai street in Naha.. pretty much the same thing. not bad, but not great. Did have a nice atmosphere.
Pizza house.. that place needs to be burned down. Took the waitress an hour to bring us our food, all 3 of our plates were cold. I watched a small table for 2 go through 3 couples before we were done eating. NOT WORTH THE $90 I SPENT THERE!!!
Capital.. Think that place has been here since the end of the war.. I only eat there when Im with a group of freinds and they all want to go. And I will try my damndest to talk them out of it.
Sams.. already have a thread in here of me bitching about that crap hole.
I am in no way a steak expert, nor do I think that what I like is what you will. But I tend to base my likes and dislikes for resturants on island off more than just their prices and food. I have spent well over $200 on steak.. it was just as good as the $40 kobe steaks at 4 seasons. I do not recomend getting the Ishigaki beef.. usually going for around $100, definatly not nearly as good as Kobe beef.

I'd have to agree that most of the steak places here are just "ok" Unless you want to shell out the extra bones for some good ol' marbled Kobe all you're going to get is some run of the mill steak. The other thing you might have noticed about Ausie and NZ beef is that its freaking tough sometimes. That's what you get with free range beef. :D

Try New York Steak Resturant on Park Avenue ( formally BC Street ) the owner is a friend of mine. The business has been in the family for over 30 years. He used it import beef from the US, but after the mad cow epidemic, he now gets all his beef from New Zealand. Great tasting steaks. the place decor is also western.

Yeah, there are a lot of great steak places off-base. Very expensive.
The best place to have a great steak is at home, from your own grill, where your friends can grill their meat to suit their tastes.
For myself, when we plan on having a steak party, I'll ask the family what kind of steak they would like to have. We'll go out and buy the beef, and let the family members season them to their liking, and they go out to grill their meat.
Most of our Okinawan family members have never been to the states. When I asked them about their favorite places to eat steak, they selected our place, over every other place that they could visit on the economy.
Some of our relatives complain about having to go outside to smoke. Heck, even I have to do that. And I live here.:cursing:
But if you're looking to eat a great piece of steak, buy a grill.:D
Because nobody can cook it any better than you can.:old:

Four seasons is still one of the best steak places on island IMO. I make it a habit of not going there too much so I don't get sick of it:D

Not only is pizza house's steak good, the rest of their food is decent too. Pizza House Jr. is perfect once you don't want anything fast foodish, but don't want anything expensive either.

Everywhere! There are a lot of them on the island. But he closest one to kadena is near the ona kau kau, and the little orange colored arcade with sonic on the side. There is another one on 330 near futenma too.

Has anyone ever had or been to one of those places were they have like 50 oz steaks and if you finish it it's free? I wonder if there are places here that do that.
In the states there was a place that sold a burger called the Terminator. It was as big as a 8 by 11 pice of paper and that just width and length. It wasn't free though.

My SO and I go to Jam once a month. It is a teppenyaki style place similar to Capital. They offer everything from hamburger to Kobe and Ishigaki Beef, as well as lobsters and an array of shellfish and prawns. The prices are not cheap, but the portions are huge and the side items numerous. The regular beef is very tender, not at all tough. We tried the Kobe, it was OK, but we usually choose to order the couples special with tenderloin, sirloin, and 2 lobster tails for 98,000 yen. You get curry soup, green salad, rice, homemade rolls, miso soup, along with the 300gm sirloin, 250gm tenderloin, tails, bokchoy, onions, goya, beneimo mochi, sprouts, and a huge portion of tofu. Desert comes with every meal, and includes sanpin tea and some type of ice cream and fresh seasonal fruit, and is served in the lounge.
If you go, plan to take plenty of yen(no credit cards and the exchange rate is low) and your time. The meals are wonderful, the staff is nice, and the bartenders generous and inventive. They will make every effort to communicate with you in English if your Japanese skills are lacking. There is even a small bar in the condom shop where you can go and chill out with the staff from the dive shop located under the restaurant. (these same people work in both establishments- dive in the morning, cook at night)
They no longer serve lunch, so the hours are 1700-2300, Wednesday to Monday, off Tuesday.
Hope this overblown diatribe answers any questions, but dang we love this place. Hope to see you there!
Thanks for the review navwifecom! That sounds great!

Just kind of wondering, whatever happened to Sam's by the Sea? Last time we were over here, everyone was nuts about that place. Too expensive, portions got smaller?
The Four Seasons used to be pretty good as well.
Still, if I want to go out for a steak, I fire up the grill on the veranda. Granted we won't have the same atmosphere, but it's cheap, it's good, and I don't have to worry about driving home drunk.:)

she talking about the steak place in Onna villiage?
Went there a few years ago when my mom was out here on vacation. was ok.. kinda pricy for the same meal that you can get at four seasons. The only real issue I had with the place was that the wife and I ordered a dinner set that came with free Ice Tea, but we ordered a beer each(and got charged for them, no problem) but my mom had 3 glasses of tea and they charged me for those too.. In my eyes, she drank mine and the wifes tea, plus her free tea.. not a big deal except when you add another $10 on top of a $300 bill. so yea, I dont ever plan on going back there. but it was nice, and the food was good. oh yea, the playboy pin-ups in the mens bathroom was a nice touch too.. just an FYI if you bring your kids there.

Yeah...the place with the totem pole out front...I have a friend who is a cook there. I've only gone for lunch, as dinner is just too pricey. He showed us how to make the different sauces though, so I just stay home now and enjoy the same taste!

Woo is just a very small gift shop located behind the main restaurant. There is a small bar with 2-3 tables and then a real small gift shop that mainly carries nautical gifts- mermaids, anchors, coconut carvings. There is a VERY small section on a wall that has a few penis related items- little wind ups, candles, bottle openers- real tame things considering. Ironically- no condoms any time we have visited. I think its just to add a little spicy draw in the village area, a little touristy enclave with many choices in bars.
I am unfamiliar with the mens room decor, but do recall a male college friend mentioning something about the lack of black bars in the men's room and laughing with the hubby.
Again, it is a very pricey place, 5000 yen a person is not uncommon, but its atmosphere, food, and lack of obnoxious crowds is very worth it for SO and I, plus it's walking distance home for us:thumbup:.

I just went to Sam's by the Sea yesterday. It was great, as always.

I have. Me and the wife go there quite a bit. Cowdy is great, the steaks and food are great and the prices are cheap.
Note: If you shou up before 3pm you get free all and can drink iced tea and a little cherry ice which is really good.
I usually order the Regular cowdy steak meal for Y980 comes with a steak, mixed veggies, fries and choice of bread or rice.
