View Full Version : So I've been out of college for a while
So I've been out of college for a while and I just started working on a graduate degree. Needless to say, I've forgotton all about how to make proper citations and whatnot. I also forgot one more important thing: Papers are to be handed in double spaced.
Yeah, I wrote my paper (supposed to be 3-5 pages) three pages too long (8)... Had single spaced the whole dang thing!!!
Man, wasted a few hours right there... :cursing: I just got done dissecting the hell out of that paper and I'm gonna give it one more trimming before sending it to the instructor...
Hope the professor is pretty forgiving on our first paper. I feel like I suck at this whole writing thing now...

I used to have this little grammar and writing book that I used once I was in college. It was a great help whenever I had to write something. Damn I wish I still had it!
Something like that would be your best bet.

Here’s an idea for both of you.
From the literature (news, opinion, reports, light reading) I read daily, I have this habit of jotting down anything that catches my eye in a collection of “Clever phrases, quotes and ideas”. Has to be concise and incisive.
Here are a few.
…it's a lot of fun to throw some raw meat out there and see which slavering carnivores show up to fight over it…
…his manner made me think of a slave owner sitting on the porch of a plantation house…
…play verbal hijinks with some of the best…
…it would be kind to describe him as unlikable…
…his prejudiced views are his liabilities; his creative ideas his assets …
If you come across a clever phrase or word, why don’t you use this thread as a repository and share.
Or create another thread if there’s interest with people trying to sharpen up writing skills.
No, I’m not an English teacher. But it doesn’t hurt to polish knowledge and skills in a lifetime of learning, and you do get comfortable writing your ideas clearly in the long run.

Clarity isn't a problem. It's just been so long since I've double-spaced anything that I totally even forgot that it's done.
But I like that idea. Probably good for another thread though.

dk,
what graduate degree are you working on?
Management Information Systems. I'm only in my first course, but I'm loving it so far.
Oh yeah, I got a 97% on that paper. :D

excellent score.
are you required to write a thesis, or is it just comprehensives?
So far it's just group projects and papers. This is just the introductory communications course to get us back in college mode. I haven't been made aware of any thesis yet.
