Sorry if the Romanji is wrong. It's been a while...
Well, um... I'm back on Okinawa (at my own request mind you) after four good years in Southern California. But I'll be honest, as good as those years were, I missed Okinawa (and I guess Japan & all Asia too) every second I was away... Did you know Bars/Clubs in San Diego close at 2AM?
Looks like I'll be here for a good while and that's about all I need to hear from my boss so I can feel safe and steady in trying to patch things up with the wife or the "estranged one" as my brothers call her... Feel like a character on a bad day-time drama sometimes. But I guess military life can do that. Make you think yourself bigger. Or smaller... Or make you feel kinda, "bleh"...
The best thing about being back is finally being able to participate in my son's life. Think I need him more than he needs me but, either way I can't wait to show him how to build houses with his pancakes! Waffles work too but, only the big boys play with pancakes...

Welcome back to the rock :) I run into so many people who hate this place and I can never understand why. It's not every day you get to live on a vacation spot. It's like living in hawaii and hating it? Just doesn't make sense. There is so much to do on this island and so very few actually get up and explore the island and take it in.

Welcome back. I keep coming back myself. On the third time now for a total of about 18 years. My kids have been fortunate enough to have pretty much grown up here. Okinawa is a great place to raise kids.

When was the last time you were here.
Was here for about two and a half years ending in summer 2002. Back then Marine unacomanied tours were still just a year long and believe it or not, I actually had to fight just to extend just that one time... And I had to fight to get out here for this tour to!
It's a strange feeling to be rejected from a duty that people claim to hate and is hard to fill... Twice!

Don't you LOVE that??? We had friends request our neck of the woods recently and people in general fend off this base as feverishly as they would a Minot stationing and they got turned down.
Seriously, I have never known another person that has had this place on their request list that HASN'T gotten it.
Well happy for you that you managed to get your request, finally.

I've heard people say that they hate it here, but I see so many extend...mainly because they love the extra pay, and the training ops in the area. Funny how people get used to having that extra pay...then don't want to seperate from it!

I think those that say they "hate it" aren't even trying to enjoy it. Just about every stationing has the potential in it, IF you take the initiative and make something out of it.

I don't hate it here, I really love the island! But, work sucks! Kadena does things back asswards and it gets annoying.

Pretty much right on though.
You do get used to it, you learn to go with the ackwards flow. Before long, it becomes what's normal to ya.
Shoot, we've been out 3 yrs and we still run on Island time...don't know if we will ever get that out of us :D
