Oyster sauce and Fish sauce is at the commissary - I use them all the time.

Basil plant- good question!

All the food I cook, I can't find the ingredients here, I have my friends shipping them to me by the caseloads! Sorry, I can only cook Thai, Hmong, Chinese, Vietnamese, Laos, Filipino, and Japanese foods. I have no clue how to make American food!

I am use to going to the Vietnamese, Hmong, Thai, Laos Markets/Stores to buy the ingredients I need. We come here and its so hard to find everything.

Try MAKEMAN in mihama if you want a potted basil or go to any farmers market, they even sell it at jusco!
Basil is very easy to find, great suggestion here, makeman or the monkey store as I like to call it has a decent selection of other herbs as well.

San Ei and JUSCO also have the leaves for sale in their produce section, they are usually wrapped in small plastic wrap and are in the "unusual" veggies section.

Oyster Sauce is also available at just about any Japanese grocery store too.

You can also find them in "ichiba"s. Local farmers' markets. If you get to go and find them, it's quite a cultural experience, not unlike going to a market in Thailand or the Philippines but cleaner.

There's one in Itoman called Umanchu-ichiba and a small one in Tomigushiku called Harsa-ichiba. These are in the south though.

In the new Mitsukoshi food market in the recently opened Tomitom center, we found fresh spices including basil, cilantro, etc.. and also Thailand & other Asian food products, such as fish sauce, sriracha chili sauce, etc...

You would have to go 15 minutes south of the airport for the one at Tomiton and Itoman is further south than that. If you are out for a drive, well that's one thing, otherwise it's far from Kadena.

Near Chuo Park Avenue, is another one go about two street lights north of that, take a left and go about 200 meters, there is another market called Noren Ichiba, a vegetable market that really is close to Kadena. It is quite large.

For growing basil, you can go to any home center on island and you should be able to find seedlings or seeds to grow your own.

I've only seen one variety of basil here, but it's aromatic and does the trick for my culinary cuisine and appetite. I was just at Makeman (Mihama American Village location) last night and they have a whole new batch of baby plants. :)

Basil is not very plentiful during the summer but it should be coming back now. Makeman has loads in their nursery section but maybe not yet. Ditto for cilantro. I bought some in a little plastic pot at San-A but it was pretty sad for 178 yen.

If you are standing in front of Starbucks turn around as if facing JUSCO and the movie theater next to it. Then look to your right, you should see a sign like this about 50 to 75 yards away on the other side of the street. The building is orange.

Look at this picture below here, do you see the white topped building in the background? Makeman is across the street from there. This picture was taken infront of the movie theater across the street from Starbucks.

Probably overkill here but....the pink building on the left is the theater, the cars parked on the right behind the half circled building are in the parking lot for Makeman.

To add to that, the make man monkey is riding a dolphin.
