View Full Version : Poison Ivey Home Remedies?

Since this afternoon I seem to have gotten an outbreak of poison ivey on my hands, wrists, and arms. I think I got it from my dogs. Perhaps they brushed up against it and then when I petted them it got onto me.

Sheesh. I don't even want to use the keyboard. Doing a lot of dipping my hands in cold water today. Arrrrrhgh.

Any home remedies out there for poison ivey?

calimine (sp) lotion? I'm not sure, I've never ran though poison ivy. Hell, I didn't even know there was poison ivy on this island, I've never seen it here!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urushiol-induced_contact_dermatitis

Maybe you can find some treatments that will work for you.

Do the things below within 6 hours. You may prevent an allergic reaction if you do.

Remove all clothes and shoes that have touched the plant.

-Wash your skin with soap and water.

-Apply rubbing alcohol with cotton balls to the parts of the skin that are affected.

-Rinse with water.

-Also tree oil helps prevent itching.

I like calimine lotion myself...not too keen on putting alcohol on the affected area.

edit * if the itching is really bad, then you can take some benydryl to help.

Thanks for some of those tips.

I would love to get some calamine lotion. I have never seen it off base in stores. Don't have base access.

Have you guys had those bubbly crusty fingers before?

When I was little I used to scratch them raw and then dip them in bleach. I am considering that. But keeping them dipped in ice cold water is nice, too. But can only handle that for a while.

You can also try:

-plain table salt. Just wet the infected area and rub it with table salt for fast relief and to stop the spread. Use again if itching doesn't stop after the first application. Usually stops it cold and also stops the spread.

-take VICKS VAPOR RUB and apply it over the affected area. It stops the itching and burning right away and leaves a nice cooling sensation. Also keeps the mosquitoes away!

My wife says bleach is the most assinine thing to do with no medical purpose.

well I put in assinine:D

She says if cant find that lotion try an oatmeal bath. Aveeno or just regular oatmeal to warm water but says benedryl is a must.

TheNoNamedOne

@CN: I think I may try the salt thing. But, some parts are scratched open. I imagine rubbing salt in an open wound is painful. But so is bleach.

@dk: lol. A bath may be good, too. Seems I got some of it "down there," too. Play with your dogs outside, then too lazy to wash your hands and relieve yourself outside and it can spread "there," too.

Man, "there" is getting bad. The arms are getting worse. The fingers are starting to not look so bad in comparison.

OH ya she said not topical benedrl but oral.

Apparently the Greeks use Windex for everything including poison ivy. And I'm only half-kidding. Google it.

In the same way, Filipinos use vicks vaporub.

My son alway keeps a tube of max strength cortisone when out in the field. He's very susceptible to poison ivy and apparently it's effective if used as soon as you feel itchiness.

Whatever you do, if you still have poison ivy on your hand, don't wipe your butt or touch your junk.

lol. Could be both.

But a lot of soaking in cold water today and tonight seems to be getting my fingers back to normal. The arms are still blistery. Don't have a deep enough bucket to go all the way up to the elbow.

Maybe I will be back in form by tomorrow. Hope you guys haven't missed me too much.

Oh, and again. Thanks for your suggestions.

It may be something more than poison ivy, I agree 100% go.......no body needs that kind of pain and discomfort.:cursing:

TP you should know better, move it.

Epsom Salt soaks, cold compresses.

You may think it's loony but something else to try is to sit facing your wife, with your legs outstretched, she will then place the palms of her hands under your calves (hands parallel to your legs) hold for 15-20 mins minimum but as long as she can comfortably do so.

Both of you should remove all metal or electronics (cells, watches or MP3 players) from your bodies as this is an energetically related treatment to help the body release the toxins.

If you really think it came from the dogs....don't forget to wash them but wear gloves.
Also need to wash things they brush up against with alcohol to keep the oils from spreading....it can remain on inanimate objects for up to a year...so we're talking repeat outbreaks if you don't get it all taken care of

Fingers are better but the arms and other places are not looking good.

I will try that Temp. Man, don't want to spend an hour in waiting room clinic yet. Poison Ivey usually lasts only 7~14 days. But gaaaawd. This is miserable.

I just found out. No, wasn't the dogs. I had used the same gardening gloves on Sunday that my wife used to weed our fence of vines on Saturday. They were disposable gloves but she didn't throw them away. She left then laying in the car port and they looked in good condition so I didn't want to waste them and used them again, forgettng she had used them on weeding the fence of vines. I am sure that is where it is from.

Wont be on much today. Back to cold water.

You have poison Ivy around your house. Rip that shit out and toss it before someone else gets this to. I was just about to ask where you caught this so we can stay away.

Your wife didnt get it either?

The poison ivy here is different than what one might expect to see in the states, there are plenty of good dermatologists here that could help you out, what's 1 hour compared to 7 to 14 days of agony.

I can not imagine how by just picking up a pair of gloves and putting them on would spread so quickly, unless you were rubbing yourself everywhere whilst wearing them.

TP personal disagreements aside here, there are some truly nasty plants here in Okinawa. There are some that if you get the juice into your eyes that can blind you.

Take a cutting of the vine that you think is the culprit and go to your nearest dermatologist/hifuka 皮膚科 you MAY being doing more damage than you think.

Poison Ivy here in Okinawa is called シタウルシ shitaurushi, or Japanese Ivy or lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum).

The liquid from the plant is used in laquerware. The liquid can be highly caustic.
Laquer Tree (http://www.pfaf.org/database/plants.php?Rhus+verniciflua)

The plant contains toxic substances that can cause severe irritation to some people[8, 19]. The sap can be particularly caustic[11]. All parts of the plant contain resinous phenolic compounds known as urushiols. Direct contacr with the plant, exposure to smoke or fumes from a burning plant or even contact with pets or animals that have touched the plant can cause severe allergic dermatitis in some individuals. There is usually a latent period of about 12 - 24 hours from the moment of contact, this is followed by a reddening and severe blistering of the skin. Even plant specimens 100 or more years old can cause problems[274].

TP I wouldn't wish something like this on my worst enemy, use your head, get to a doctor and get the right medication.

Posting should get the itch off "there" and make him feel better.

If he gets to be too much again, you can always stick a few of those "lacquer" plants in his garden and get him "lacquering" off a few days.

Not. Too cruel.

LOL

Ive been telling him that a few times today....I am begining to believe that TP is a glutton for punishment otherwise known as a masochist......

gratification gained from pain, deprivation, degradation, etc., inflicted or imposed on oneself, either as a result of one's own actions or the actions of others, esp. the tendency to seek this form of gratification.

So just maybe he is really getting off on all of this pain and suffering:rolleyes:

I also suggest a long, long, stay in the hospital to relieve your "pain" :D

It’s called giving the sick and afflicted a “shot in the arm”, - encouragement. I’m sure all of us have done some of that, even the youngsters in here. Nothing to be prissy about.

I respect the fact that TP is a married adult. Along with his wife, he probably knows what’s best. We say hello and try to lift his spirits.

btw, still bubbly blisters on arms and fingers. The blisters on the fingers had gone down for a while but I had a scratch fest ealier and they seem to have come back. It is not so bad if I don't touch anything.

I thought I could keep from using the computer and forum, but hate not replying to some of your comments or getting something out for discussion.

Though, I have been avoiding a few threads that I think would cause me to type more than just one or two replies. Won't be on too long tonight.

Oh, I learned that keeping my hands up against a high blasting air conditioner vents in my car is really soothing. Sweat and warmth makes things worse.

TP, that looks like serious stuff, not like the typical poison ivy blisters I've seen.

I'd go to a specialist and find out exactly what it is and what caused it, if I were you.

The only difference being the clear liquid pustule's which look similar to severe burns.

TP I told you before what you probably have, it isnt the same as poison ivy in the US.

You want scars left on your body thats your choice. Get to a Doc.

Muku, you are right about it being ushiroilru and the quote you posted was right, too. I saw that but yesterday and the day before I just did not feel like replying much so I didn't comment on it.

I had a much worse case about 7 years ago of the same thing. I guess that is why I am not going to the clinic now. Then I did go, and the crap that doctor gave me for it made me feel more miserable -- sticky ointment all over my body. I have a phobia about sticky stuff on me.

Actually, the itching is starting to act up right about now. Gonna try to get to sleep so I sleep through it, if I can. Posted more than I had expected today.

Thanks to you and everyone for all your good words and advice. Appreciated.
